Yes—but choices change the route, the team’s reactions and a handful of combat advantages, not the game’s main ending. In the 2021 Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, you lead Peter Quill and the other Guardians through a mostly linear campaign. Some decisions change a later chapter, unlock a collectible or bring an ally into a fight; many dialogue choices only change the next exchange. There is one successful main ending, not a set of different endings, and a Guardian will not die or leave because you chose badly.

The useful distinction is between a conversation that adds flavor and a decision the game remembers. Lasting choices are usually confirmed by pink or red text at the upper-right of the screen. The biggest payoffs are choosing whether to sell Groot or Rocket, deciding whether to trust Gamora, and talking the Worldmind and Cosmo out of their doubts.

How do choices and relationships work?

The campaign is linear, but the path through it is not entirely fixed. Narrative director Mary DeMarle described the game as having the same beginning and ending for everyone, with choices reflected in smaller or sometimes substantial ways along the way. That design is why two players can share the same final destination but see different scenes, routes, rewards and combat support.

Choices fall into three practical groups:

  • Snap dialogue: A timed line or silence often changes only the immediate banter. If Star-Lord’s icon appears with two timed responses, it is usually a flavor choice, according to IGN’s guide.
  • Small route or reward changes: These can alter access to a room, a collectible, a shortcut, an encounter or a reward without changing the campaign’s destination.
  • Major decisions: These tend to require a definite choice rather than letting the timer expire. They can reshape a later sequence, alter how a teammate responds, or determine whether an ally helps in the final stretch.

The game does not always warn you before a choice matters. After a stored decision, look for the pink or red upper-right message: it signals that a character noticed or remembered the call. A consequence may arrive immediately or several chapters later. If a timed choice goes wrong, reloading the last checkpoint may help; important sequences often autosave at their start.

That is a relationship system, but not a hidden numerical affinity meter. The game shows when a Guardian is pleased or upset and later reflects some calls in dialogue. There is no romance route with Gamora, no published affinity formula, and no loyalty-mission structure that lets you permanently lose a teammate. The relationship theme is found family: Quill is meant to lead by listening, even when the others disagree or act on their own.

Which early choices have lasting consequences?

The early choices mostly trade credits, convenience and team goodwill. They do not lock you out of the main story, but a couple can save time or make later exploration easier.

Chapter 2: hide the llama or Rocket’s tech?

When Nova Corps boards the Milano, choose whether to conceal Kammy the llama or Rocket’s illegal tech. Kammy remains with the team either way, but the fine and a Chapter 10 escape sequence change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Choice Immediate result Later payoff
Hide the llama 7,000-unit fine; Rocket’s tech is confiscated. In Chapter 10, Kammy chews a hole through the wall, giving the team a way out of Quill’s quarters.
Hide Rocket’s tech 8,000-unit fine. The Milano gets homing missiles in Chapter 9 (IGN also lists Chapter 14); in Chapter 10, you sing to lure Kammy onto the door wiring.

IGN, PowerPyx, CBR and Giga.de report the 7,000- and 8,000-unit fines. The practical choice is to hide Kammy if you want to keep more credits and take the simpler Chapter 10 escape. Hiding the tech has a small ship-upgrade payoff instead. PowerPyx mentions player reports of a 9,000-unit fine if the timer expires without hiding either item, but that figure is not established as a verified outcome.

Chapter 2: side with Nikki or Ko-Rel?

During the elevator conversation, you can divert attention, tell Ko-Rel the truth, or take the blame. Being kind to Nikki—by diverting attention or taking the blame—gets you her passkey. It provides access to locked rooms in Chapter 7 and helps you find Drax’s Rap Sheet collectible. Tell Ko-Rel the truth and she takes the passkey, so you will need to find a Nexus passcode later to reach the relevant area.

The passkey is useful, but this is not a hard story lock: CBR notes that Rocket can reach Nikki’s quarters another way through an access hatch. Siding with Nikki is the easier route to the passkey and collectible, not a prerequisite for finishing the campaign.

Chapter 3: let Drax throw Rocket?

At the chasms, you can encourage Drax to throw Rocket or stop him. Letting Drax throw Rocket creates a shortcut, but Rocket is furious and will not agree to a second throw. Stopping Drax takes longer and earns Rocket’s goodwill; the detour also has extra components. IGN says the throw can only be used once, while PowerPyx notes that the choice does not produce a lasting campaign effect or make collectibles permanently missable.

Should you sell Groot or Rocket to Lady Hellbender?

This is the campaign’s largest branch. Selling Groot leads to a successful negotiation and a stealth escape from the throne-room dungeons. Selling Rocket guarantees that the deal fails, triggers a fight and sends the team to Hellbender’s vault. Both routes return to the same Dweller-in-Darkness boss and the same larger plot.

Option Chapter 4 route Credits and trade-off
Sell Groot Negotiation succeeds; escape through the dungeons using stealth. PowerPyx and Giga.de report 9,000 units for pitching other buyers and standing firm, or 10,500 if you stress Groot’s uniqueness and let Drax close the deal. IGN instead lists 15,000 units; sources conflict on the amount.
Sell Rocket Hellbender rejects the offer; Rocket opens fire, and the team fights its way to the vault. Up to 12,000 units if you loot the vault thoroughly before the scene moves on, according to IGN and Giga.de.

There is no universally better choice: Groot’s route is a negotiation followed by stealth, while Rocket’s route is combat and a vault heist. The sold Guardian is recovered, and both paths have collectibles and outfits in different places. PowerPyx calls Groot the path of least resistance; Giga.de notes that Rocket’s vault can pay more if you collect its contents before the automatic scene transition.

The Groot-sale payout deserves a caveat: PowerPyx and Giga.de give a line-dependent 9,000- or 10,500-unit result, while IGN says 15,000. The available accounts do not resolve the discrepancy, so do not rely on the higher amount when planning your credits.

What happens if you make different choices in the middle chapters?

Several mid-campaign decisions affect a single encounter, collectible or relationship beat. They are meaningful in the moment, but they do not open a second campaign.

  • Chapter 5, Nova helmet: Put the helmet down and the team is glad; you get the drop on the enemies. Speak into it and the enemy is alerted, leading to a fight from the elevator in the next room. The extra encounter can still build the ability meter, but PowerPyx recommends putting the helmet down. There is no later-chapter lock.
  • Chapter 5, prisoner: GamePressure lists a choice to release or leave a prisoner, but the available guides do not detail a clear lasting consequence. Treat it as a smaller, uncertain branch rather than a known ending decision.
  • Chapter 6, Lipless: This optional bar encounter is easy to miss if you walk past. To restore the friendship and receive a free Collector’s Emporium ticket, choose “Like a Hurricane” and then “Through the Rain.” Wrong weather-free or lip-themed lines turn Lipless hostile, and the ticket costs 5,000 units instead. IGN and Giga.de report the ticket price.
  • Chapter 6, spending on Knowhere: Money spent on optional items can matter later if you want the Galactic Frugality trophy. A Disabler from the junk dealer costs 1,500 units, according to IGN, and it can be kept secret from Rocket. You can still finish the game without it; PowerPyx and Polygon note that the trophy requires enough credits to pay the Nova Corps fine in Chapter 9.
  • Chapter 8, distract Raker: Keep the conversation going with “Distract Raker,” then “Something About Him?” and “Fake Heart Attack.” Success gives Rocket time to hack a drone; later it marks a route and enables a comms call-in. Fail or let the timer run out and you face extra comm-center steps without the door intel.

Should you trust Gamora to go after Raker?

Yes, if you want to weaken Raker later; no, if you would rather keep Gamora with you for the rest of that mission. This is a spatial choice rather than a dialogue-wheel prompt: let Gamora run up the ramp alone, or follow her and stop her.

If you let her go, she is absent for the rest of the mission and returns in Chapter 9 with one of Raker’s arms. That injury weakens him later and removes a wide spear attack that requires both arms. Gamora is distant afterward, but the relationship callback can be addressed on the Milano by choosing “Break into song.” If you chase her, a walkway collapses and she saves you; she is angry, and Raker remains at full strength. Polygon, IGN, CBR, GamingBolt, GamePressure and Giga.de describe this as a player choice. PowerPyx calls it automatic, so its account is incomplete on this particular beat.

How can you earn Worldmind and Cosmo’s help?

Two late-game conversations can turn potential allies into combat support. Their payoff arrives in Chapter 14, where each can eliminate a large group of enemies if you successfully persuade them earlier.

Chapter 9: persuade the Worldmind

You get three timed topics. The first and third recommended lines are consistent across the guides: “Share Intel” and “Put into Perspective” (some guides phrase the last as “Put In Perspective”). The middle choice is disputed: IGN and PowerPyx list “Question Strategy,” while Polygon and GamingBolt list “Appeal to Duty.” IGN says at least two correct answers out of three are enough, which may help explain why walkthroughs differ. The shared principle is to give the Worldmind reason to consider the situation logically rather than challenge its honor.

If you plant enough doubt, the Worldmind returns in Chapter 14 and wipes out a large enemy group or destroys the Inquisitor’s charging platforms. If you fail the conversation, you lose that assistance, not the main ending.

Chapter 12: free Cosmo from the Promise

Choose “Offer hand,” “Focus on present,” and “Remind about puppies.” Success earns Cosmo’s thanks, skips a puppy-illusion trap and brings Cosmo to the Chapter 14 fight to destroy a legion. If you fail, the team faces an illusion maze guided by puppy barks and a longer turret-hack fight, without Cosmo’s help. The choice changes the mission’s difficulty and final-battle support, not who wins the story.

Does Guardians of the Galaxy have multiple endings?

No. Successful playthroughs converge on one main ending: the Church is defeated, Magus is resealed, Nikki joins the team, and the story reaches its business-card gag. DeMarle said the game has the same ending for everyone, with at most minor changes. The meaningful exception is a small ending variation tied to the unpaid Nova Corps fine, not an alternative victory or a different final boss.

In Chapter 9, use the New Xander computer on the Milano and open Criminal Offenses > Past Crime > Pay A Fine. Paying in full earns the Galactic Frugality trophy or achievement. If you refuse, IGN says the story still ends, with a small bonus scene; the game’s plot account describes the Nova Corps tracker disabling the Milano and leaving the team stranded in space after the main events. If you do not have enough credits, the payment fails and the trophy is missed. PowerPyx notes that credits have little use after this point, so anyone pursuing the trophy should protect the required amount from optional spending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are also failed states, but they are not alternate successful endings. In Chapter 8, Meredith’s hug is an illusion: push her away with the left stick and shoot. Embrace it and a false suburban ending plays with credits; you can rethink the choice and return to the game. In Chapter 15, Nikki’s Promise can loop until you choose the right responses. In Chapter 16, Magus must be provoked with “Slow Clap,” then “Badger,” then “Provoke”; incorrect lines make you retry the interaction.

What should you prioritize if you want the easiest useful outcomes?

If you want practical payoffs without treating every line like a hidden loyalty test, these are the decisions worth watching:

  1. Hide Kammy in Chapter 2 to keep the fine lower and make the Chapter 10 escape simpler.
  2. Be kind to Nikki in the elevator to get her passkey and make Chapter 7 access easier.
  3. Choose the Hellbender route you prefer: Groot for negotiation and stealth; Rocket for combat and a chance at more vault credits.
  4. Let Gamora pursue Raker if you want his later fight weakened, and use “Break into song” on the Milano to repair the emotional distance.
  5. Give the Worldmind a reason to reconsider and free Cosmo from the Promise if you want both allies in the Chapter 14 battle.
  6. Keep enough credits for the Chapter 9 fine if earning Galactic Frugality matters to you.

For the rest, respond as the leader you want Quill to be. Optional banter does not affect the campaign, and the game is designed to let the Guardians disagree without turning every disagreement into a permanent penalty.

Can you replay choices without starting over?

Chapter replay is available, so you can revisit sections to see alternate versions. New Game Plus also exists, but GameSpot’s assessment, relayed in the available reference material, was that its changes are too small to make a second run necessary just to experience the story differently. If you are choosing only for a different true ending, a replay will not reveal one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does choosing silence in a timed dialogue count as a decision?

Sometimes Star-Lord responds on his own when a timer expires, so silence is not always neutral. Check for the upper-right consequence notice afterward; if the response is not what you wanted, reloading the checkpoint may restore the choice.

Can I collect everything in one playthrough if I sell Rocket?

The Groot and Rocket routes place some collectibles and outfits in different locations. Chapter replay lets you revisit the other route, so choosing Rocket does not mean you must permanently abandon the content on Groot’s path.

Is Gamora Star-Lord’s love interest in this game?

No. The game deliberately avoids making Gamora Quill’s romantic partner and instead centers the team’s found-family dynamic. Their trust and dialogue can change, but there is no romance route to unlock.

How many dialogue branches does the game have?

Eidos-Montréal has not published an official total for dialogue nodes or branches in the material available for this topic. The visible consequence notices identify remembered decisions, but they do not reveal a count of every possible line or route.
