Yes—but producing some electricity is not the same as producing enough to make a balcony solar kit worthwhile. South-facing modules generally deliver the best yields; east- and west-facing modules can also work well. Shade can significantly reduce output, and winter’s low sun creates longer shadows. A north-facing balcony may still receive enough light to generate electricity, but official guidance reviewed here does not establish a universal yield for north-facing or winter installations. Your location, panel direction and tilt, shade pattern, and household electricity use determine the practical result.
How much do orientation and shade matter?
The Umweltbundesamt (Germany’s Federal Environment Agency) says south-facing modules provide the best yields, while east- and west-facing orientations are also possible. East- or west-facing panels may also better match a household’s morning or late-afternoon electricity use, depending on when appliances are running. These are general orientation comparisons, not a prediction for every balcony. Umweltbundesamt guidance
Partial shade can cut generation
Even partial shading can significantly reduce output. The effect depends on where and when shade falls and how much of the module it covers; the official general guidance does not support one percentage that applies to all balconies. A building, tree, railing, or neighboring structure may shade a panel for only part of the day, but that pattern still matters when estimating generation. Berlin’s Solarcity guidance also notes that winter shadows extend farther because the sun is lower. Berlin Solarcity guidance
North-facing balconies are a weaker prospect, not a guaranteed zero
A north-facing module can generate electricity when it receives light, but the reviewed official sources identify south as the strongest general orientation and east or west as viable alternatives. They do not quantify north-facing output. It is therefore reasonable to treat a typical north-facing balcony as a less favorable purchase prospect than a comparable south-facing one, but that is an inference from the orientation guidance—not a measured yield or a claim that every north-facing installation is useless. Nearby buildings, latitude, panel angle, and exposure can change the result.

What changes in winter?
Balcony modules continue to produce when they receive light, but winter usually brings less opportunity: the sun sits lower, days are shorter, and obstructions cast longer shadows. The Umweltbundesamt notes a seasonal nuance for vertical rail-mounted panels: they can do somewhat better in winter than in summer relative to their own seasonal performance. That does not mean winter output is high; vertical panels tend to give up summer yield in exchange for that relative winter advantage. Umweltbundesamt guidance
Vertical mounting versus tilting
Berlin Solarcity says angling a module about 30 degrees toward the sun can significantly improve yield compared with hanging it vertically. This is not at odds with the Umweltbundesamt’s seasonal observation: one compares tilted mounting with vertical mounting, while the other describes a vertical panel’s performance across seasons. Any tilt or alternate mounting must remain secure and suitable for the balcony; do not trade wind resistance or safe fixing for a hoped-for output gain. Berlin Solarcity guidance

Will the electricity save enough to justify a kit?
Generation is only part of the decision. Plug-in balcony systems are generally intended to supply electricity for immediate household use. Power produced when little is being used may not translate into an equivalent reduction in the electricity bill, so compare expected generation with your consumption during sunny hours. The Umweltbundesamt cautions that a typical balcony system may have too little surplus—particularly in winter and shoulder seasons—to make storage worthwhile for a typical household. Umweltbundesamt guidance
As an illustration rather than a promise, the Umweltbundesamt’s 2026 example says 45% of generation, or 240 kWh, is consumed directly at home without a battery, and calculates nearly €90 in annual savings using an assumed electricity price of 37 ct/kWh. Those figures belong to the agency’s example and assumptions; they are not a forecast for a shaded, north-facing, or winter-only installation, nor a universal electricity price. How to estimate your own balcony
- Record the site and panel direction. Use the balcony or proposed module’s actual direction, rather than assuming it matches the apartment’s entrance or the building’s front.
- Note mounting options. Record whether the panel can face outward or be tilted toward the sun, but only consider arrangements that can be mounted safely and securely.
- Map shade through the day. Note which parts of the module are shaded and at what times. Consider winter separately because low sun makes shadows longer.
- Use a location-specific estimate. For a German plug-in solar case, HTW Berlin’s Stecker-Solar-Simulator estimates self-supply, solar use, avoided emissions, generation cost, and payback. Its results are modeled estimates, not an on-site performance guarantee. The accompanying 2024 simulator documentation explains modeled shade and seasonal effects; its examples should not be mistaken for a prediction for your balcony.
- Check the assumptions against your use. Compare estimated production with the electricity your household uses during the hours the panel generates. A generation estimate alone does not establish equal bill savings.
- Check local installation requirements. Confirm that the kit’s module and inverter, mounting, and electrical connection comply with the rules where you live before buying or installing it.
Which rules and safety checks apply?
Legal and electrical requirements vary by country, and the limits below are specific to Germany. The Bundesnetzagentur describes the German small-system category as allowing up to 2,000 W of installed module power and an inverter with up to 800 VA output; registration in the Marktstammdatenregister is also part of the German context. Do not assume these limits or registration rules apply elsewhere. Bundesnetzagentur: Balcony solar systems
For Germany, the Umweltbundesamt says a Schuko connection is norm-compliant only under specified conditions, including module power no greater than 960 W, compliance with DIN VDE V 0126-95, and additional safeguards. It also says not to use a multiple outlet strip. This is not a blanket assurance that any kit can safely plug into any household outlet. The DKE says DIN VDE V 0126-95 was published in December 2025 and sets product requirements addressing electric shock, assembly by laypeople, mechanical safety, and household-wiring overload. Check current local requirements and the product’s instructions rather than applying German technical guidance to another jurisdiction.
