No—not as a standard requirement. AI is helping drive a sharp rise in data-center electricity demand, and nuclear power is one option for supplying dependable, low-carbon electricity. But “built-in reactor” can mean a power contract with an existing plant, a data center located near a nuclear station, or a proposed future reactor. Those are very different arrangements, and none means reactors are already a routine part of data-center construction.

How much electricity are data centers expected to use?

The International Energy Agency’s (IEA) updated 2026 central outlook projects global data-center electricity consumption rising from 485 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2025 to 950 TWh in 2030. That is a forecast, not a measured future result; the IEA projects AI-focused data-center electricity consumption to triple over the same period. IEA, “Key Questions on Energy and AI” (2026)

The growth is already visible in the IEA’s reported figures: data-center electricity demand grew 17% in 2025, compared with 3% growth in global electricity demand. IEA, “Key Questions on Energy and AI” (2026)

Forecasts should be compared only with their scenario, year, and geography attached. The IEA’s earlier 2025 report projected data-center electricity generation needs of 460 TWh in 2024, more than 1,000 TWh in 2030, and 1,300 TWh in 2035 in its global Base Case. That was a projection published in 2025, not a competing measurement; the IEA’s 2026 outlook uses updated data and differs. IEA, “Energy and AI” (2025)

A separate U.S. estimate is not directly comparable with those global TWh projections: the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimated that data centers could account for 11.8% of U.S. electricity use by the end of the decade, with a range of 9.5% to 15.3%. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) summarizes that estimate in its 2026 data-center resource hub. DOE, “Powering America’s AI Future—Data Center Resource Hub” (2026)

These estimates are uncertain because electricity demand depends on data-center growth, AI adoption, efficiency, infrastructure bottlenecks, and economic conditions. A forecast is not a guarantee that all proposed facilities will be built or use the projected power.

Why is nuclear power being considered?

Data centers can run around the clock, making dependable electricity important. Nuclear is being considered as one possible source of firm, low-carbon power—not as the only solution and not as a requirement for every new facility.

The broader supply response includes renewables and other resources. In its 2025 Base Case, the IEA says renewables meet nearly half of additional electricity demand over the next five years, with nuclear becoming more important toward the end of the decade and beyond. The DOE likewise discusses a range of clean-energy resources for meeting data-center demand. IEA, “Energy and AI” (2025); DOE, “Clean Energy Resources to Meet Data Center Electricity Demand”

The IEA’s report page puts the underlying issue plainly: “There is no AI without energy – specifically electricity for data centres.” IEA, “Energy and AI”

What does “built-in nuclear reactor” actually mean?

The phrase can describe at least three arrangements. They differ in whether a reactor already exists, how electricity reaches the data center, and how soon the supply could be available.

A power agreement with an existing plant or planned restart

A data-center operator can contract for electricity from a nuclear plant without owning or building a reactor onsite. The DOE describes Microsoft and Constellation Energy’s 20-year agreement tied to a planned restart of Three Mile Island Unit 1 to support Microsoft’s data-center operations. This is a power agreement and a planned restart—not a reactor inside a data center, and not evidence that the restart has already delivered power. DOE, “Advantages and Challenges of Nuclear-Powered Data Centers”

Co-location near a nuclear station

A data center may be built near a nuclear station and seek electricity from it. Physical proximity does not, on its own, establish that the site has a dedicated supply or bypasses the grid. The arrangement raises questions about grid connections, regulation, reliability, and whether the plant’s electricity is reserved for the data center or delivered through the wider power system. A new small modular or advanced reactor

Small modular reactors (SMRs) and other advanced reactors are a possible future route to supplying data centers, but agreements and proposals are not operating plants. The DOE says widespread commercial deployment of advanced reactors is likely in the 2030s. That timing makes new reactors distinct from buying power from existing plants or pursuing a planned restart. DOE, “Advantages and Challenges of Nuclear-Powered Data Centers”

Are SMRs already being built for data centers?

There is a growing pipeline of interest, but it should not be mistaken for installed generating capacity. The IEA reported that conditional offtake agreements between data-center operators and SMR projects grew from 25 gigawatts (GW) at the end of 2024 to 45 GW by April 2026. Those figures describe a pipeline of conditional agreements, not nuclear capacity already built or operating. IEA, “Key Questions on Energy and AI” (2026)

Project status matters. A proposal, memorandum, conditional agreement, construction permit, construction start, and operating plant are separate milestones. A project’s planned capacity does not mean it is already supplying electricity.

What could delay nuclear or other new power supplies?

Building generation is only part of connecting a large data-center load to electricity. The IEA identifies slow grid connections and approvals, along with constrained supply chains for transformers and other energy equipment, as obstacles to near-term data-center expansion. IEA, “Key Questions on Energy and AI” (2026)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Demand patterns also matter. The IEA notes that AI data centers can have rapid, large swings in electricity demand, which can stretch the technical capabilities of onsite gas plants. Onsite generation alone therefore does not settle questions of load management, reliability, interconnection, or whether supply will arrive when a facility needs it. IEA, “Key Questions on Energy and AI” (2026)

What should to watch for in a nuclear-data-center announcement?

  • What is being announced? A power purchase, a nearby facility, a reactor proposal, or a project under construction are not interchangeable.
  • What is the status? Check whether the plant is proposed, permitted, being built, or operating. Announced capacity is not delivered electricity.
  • When could power be available? Existing-plant supply, a planned restart, and a new advanced reactor have different timelines.
  • How will electricity reach the site? Look for whether the plan depends on grid connections, an arrangement with a nearby plant, or new onsite generation.
  • What is the wider supply mix? Nuclear is one potential source alongside renewables and other resources, not a standalone answer to rising demand.
