DMZ is an extraction mode: enter with objectives, gather supplies, and get out before the run ends. The rules depend on which DMZ you mean. The original Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 mode put carried loot at risk when you died; the newly announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ is set in Hajin, but its detailed gear, contract, and extraction rules have not yet been fully announced. This FAQ separates the two so legacy advice is not mistaken for confirmed rules in the upcoming mode.
How do you survive in DMZ?
In the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ, you chose faction missions, entered Al Mazrah, gathered valuables and supplies, pursued missions or optional activities, and tried to extract alive. Activision described the mode as single-life: dying could cost nonpermanent items in your backpack. Activision’s November 14, 2022 overview explains that legacy loop.
That makes time a trade-off. Staying longer may let you complete more objectives or collect more loot, but it also leaves your carried items exposed for longer and risks missing the available exits. This is a practical inference from the documented loss and extraction rules, not a proven optimal strategy.
The upcoming Modern Warfare 4 DMZ is a separate mode. As of October 7, 2026, Activision describes it as a Hajin-based experience with Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, player-driven encounters, and match-to-match progression. Those announced features do not establish that the original mode’s single-life or backpack rules carry over.

What gear should you bring?
For the original mode, your backpack held weapons, equipment, cash, and valuables; found items had to be placed in it manually. Gear details changed over time, so the following distinctions are specifically from Activision’s Season 03 overview, published April 10, 2023. They should not be treated as a guide to a current build or to the new Hajin mode.

Choose among those legacy options according to the documented trade-off: backpack capacity versus weapon slots, faster revives, additional UAV or nearby-enemy information, radar concealment, or underwater breathing. Activision’s descriptions establish those purposes, not which item is best in any particular live version.

What threats should you expect?
Activision’s original DMZ overview named enemy Operators, AI combatants, sandstorms, and radiation as threats. Other players could be pursuing different tasks in the same world, so encounters with them were uncertain as well as potentially hostile. The overview also warned that players who remained after the exfil opportunities ended could be left behind and become MIA.
Do not assume that this exact hazard list applies to Hajin. The official materials reviewed for the upcoming mode do not establish its full threat or survival rules.

How do contracts and missions work?
Original Warzone 2.0 DMZ
Faction missions were selected before a match. Contracts, world events, and locations offered additional activities. Activision’s Season 03 update also documented a Supply Run contract and barter recipes at Buy Stations. These activities could advance objectives or provide supplies; they were separate from extracting, which was the step that got your surviving run and carried items out of the match.
Modern Warfare 4 DMZ
Activision has announced narrative-driven Story Missions and Dynamic Operations, but the official materials do not provide a complete contract list, detailed reward values, or a confirmed mapping between these activities and the older contract system. Treat names, rewards, and specific contract strategies as unconfirmed until Activision publishes those details.

How does extraction work?
Original Warzone 2.0 DMZ
The original overview described calling a helicopter at marked exfil locations. After the marked opportunities had been used, a final exfil served as the last escape route. Waiting could give you more time for objectives, but if you failed to reach an available exit, you risked being left behind; dying could also cost nonpermanent backpack contents.
Modern Warfare 4 DMZ
A detailed extraction ruleset for the Hajin mode has not been established in the official materials available as of October 7, 2026. Do not assume it uses the original mode’s helicopter calls, final exfil, or consequences for death.

When does the new DMZ arrive, and what is confirmed?
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to launch October 23, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. As of October 7, the game had not yet reached that announced launch date. Activision’s official intel hub, dated October 5, 2026, describes the mode as “a living combat world” combining Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, player-driven encounters, and match-to-match progression. The June 6, 2026 deep dive and hub say more DMZ information is forthcoming; they do not yet settle detailed gear, contract, or extraction mechanics.
