DLSS can raise frame rates by reconstructing the chosen output resolution from a lower-resolution render, but the result may lose or destabilize fine detail. Native rendering draws at the output resolution, yet its final image still depends on the game’s anti-aliasing and other processing. Compare the same game, scene, output resolution, and settings—and inspect motion as well as still images.
How DLSS Super Resolution differs from native rendering
With native resolution, the game renders its base image at the resolution of the display output. That does not mean the image is untouched: anti-aliasing, sharpening, and other post-processing may still affect the final result.
DLSS Super Resolution renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs an image at the selected output resolution using temporal and spatial information. NVIDIA describes DLSS as a suite of neural-rendering technologies powered by RTX Tensor Cores, designed to increase frame rates while targeting image quality comparable to native rendering. That is NVIDIA’s stated aim, not a guarantee that every game or scene will match native detail. NVIDIA’s DLSS overview
Because the game directly renders fewer pixels, Super Resolution can improve performance. The size of any gain depends on the game, graphics settings, GPU or CPU bottlenecks, output resolution, and selected DLSS mode. There is no broadly applicable performance multiplier that predicts the result for every setup.

DLSS, DLAA, and frame generation are different
- DLSS Super Resolution: Reconstructs the output image from a lower-resolution internal render.
- DLAA: Uses DLSS technology for anti-aliasing while rendering at native resolution. It is not the lower-resolution upscaling path.
- Frame generation: A separate frame-rate technology. Keep it off when isolating Super Resolution image quality, or report it separately so it is not confused with the upscaler’s effect.
NVIDIA’s driver installation guide distinguishes Super Resolution from DLAA. DLSS Super Resolution is an RTX hardware use case, but the features supported depend on the GPU generation; support for one DLSS component should not be taken to mean every component is supported.
Is DLSS better than native resolution?
Sometimes a particular DLSS mode looks preferable to a game’s native-rendering option; sometimes native retains details or temporal behavior that the reconstructed image does not. The comparison depends on the game’s implementation, scene, output resolution, DLSS mode and model, and native anti-aliasing method. “Native” is not an automatic quality win, and DLSS is not guaranteed to reproduce all the detail native rendering captures.

NVIDIA announced in 2026 that its second-generation transformer model for DLSS 4.5 improves image quality and temporal stability, and highlighted Performance and Ultra Performance modes for quality/performance benefits. Those are NVIDIA’s claims about the model, not a universal result across all games. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 announcement
Independent reviews likewise show why results should be treated as scenario-specific. Digital Foundry’s January 23, 2026 review found improvements in tested cases while noting remaining issues with some ray-tracing effects. PC Gamer reported less pixel crawling and improved temporal stability in its examples; it also noted that Performance mode at 1080p uses a 540p internal render resolution. That 540p figure applies to the tested mode and output resolution, not to DLSS Performance mode in every context. Digital Foundry’s DLSS 4.5 review · PC Gamer’s DLSS 4.5 testing and setup guide

In a six-game 4K blind test by ComputerBase, DLSS 4.5 received 48.2% of votes, as reported by Tom’s Hardware. This is a preference result for that game sample and test setup—not a technical measurement establishing that DLSS is generally superior to native rendering. Tom’s Hardware’s report on the blind test
Does DLSS look worse than native? Artifacts to check
DLSS reconstructs detail rather than directly rendering every output pixel. Depending on the game and scene, fine detail can look less stable or less distinct than in native rendering. Temporal reconstruction may also produce artifacts as objects move or become visible. NVIDIA’s technical discussion of DLSS describes reconstruction and temporal-stability challenges; newer models may reduce some problems without eliminating every case. - Unstable fine detail: Small patterns, foliage, distant textures, or other intricate detail can shimmer or change between frames.
- Pixel crawling: Thin edges and high-contrast detail may appear to crawl or flicker during motion. PC Gamer reported less of this in its tested DLSS 4.5 examples, not in every game.
- Ghosting: Moving objects can leave trails or lingering traces, particularly where the current frame provides limited information about what was previously hidden.
- Disocclusion issues: When movement reveals a previously obscured area, reconstruction may struggle with newly visible detail.
- Ray-tracing artifacts: Some ray-traced effects can remain problematic in particular implementations, as Digital Foundry noted in its DLSS 4.5 review.
A paused screenshot can miss temporal problems. Check the same moving objects and camera movement in both modes, including newly revealed areas, rather than judging only a still frame.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does DLSS improve FPS?
It can. Super Resolution gives the GPU fewer pixels to render directly, then reconstructs the chosen output resolution. The actual frame-rate change depends on whether the GPU is the limiting factor and on the mode, game, output resolution, and settings. If performance is limited elsewhere, lowering internal rendering resolution may have a smaller effect than expected.

Do not use frame generation as evidence of Super Resolution’s performance or image-quality effect. Compare frame rates separately from image preference, and note whether frame generation was enabled. Also record the mode or internal resolution: a more aggressive lower-resolution mode changes the reconstruction challenge as well as the potential performance tradeoff.
How to make a fair DLSS-versus-native comparison
- Choose one game and repeatable scene. Use the same route, camera position, and movement so both runs show comparable detail and motion.
- Fix the output resolution and graphics settings. Keep settings aligned, including ray tracing, and change only the rendering path being evaluated.
- Record the DLSS mode and model. Note the game version, GPU, selected mode or preset, and internal render resolution if the game exposes it. Record the native anti-aliasing option too.
- Keep frame generation separate. Disable it for a Super Resolution comparison, or report its results distinctly.
- Inspect stills and motion. Look closely at thin geometry, wires, foliage, particles, moving objects, newly revealed areas, and ray-traced lighting or reflections.
- Measure performance separately. Compare frame rate under the same scene and settings, and state the hardware and test setup. Treat the outcome as specific to that setup rather than a verdict for every game.
Choosing between DLSS and native resolution
Use the option that best suits your priorities in the specific game. If native rendering already delivers the performance you want, compare its anti-aliasing and image stability with DLSS rather than assuming one label guarantees better quality. If you need more GPU performance, try a DLSS mode and inspect its fine detail and motion artifacts at your actual output resolution. A mode that looks acceptable in one scene may behave differently in another.
For DLAA, make a separate comparison against the game’s native anti-aliasing options: DLAA uses native-resolution rendering, so it answers a different question from Super Resolution. For broader hardware context, NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX graphics cards page covers the relevant GPU family; supported DLSS components vary by generation.
