DJI’s sub-$450 Flip drone folds for travel, follows human subjects, and is rated for up to 31 minutes of flight, but the tracking modes do not provide obstacle avoidance. In the U.S., DJI lists the RC-N3 package at $439 as checked August 16, 2026, and that package requires a smartphone for live view.
The DJI Flip is best understood as a guarded, foldable camera drone for beginners, vloggers, travelers, and social-video creators. The full-coverage propeller guard, palm launch, three-axis gimbal, and automated filming modes make the Flip unusually approachable. The central limitation is just as important: the guard is a safety aid, not a substitute for obstacle sensing or pilot attention.
Key takeaways
- DJI lists the U.S. DJI Flip with an RC-N3 controller at $439, while the RC 2 screen-controller configuration costs more.
- The Flip weighs under 249 grams, uses a 1/1.3-inch camera sensor, and records up to 4K/60fps HDR video.
- DJI’s 31-minute flight figure is a controlled maximum measured until forced landing at zero battery; DJI separately lists 28 minutes of maximum hovering time.
- Subject Tracking and other intelligent functions do not support obstacle avoidance, so following a person near trees, buildings, wires, or other obstacles remains a manual-risk activity.
- The Flip sits between the cheaper DJI Neo, which also lacks obstacle avoidance, and the substantially more expensive Mini 4 Pro, which adds omnidirectional obstacle sensing.
What is the DJI Flip?
The DJI Flip is a foldable, guarded camera drone designed around quick personal filming rather than conventional enthusiast-drone controls. DJI combines a full-coverage foldable propeller guard with a three-axis mechanical gimbal, a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor, palm takeoff and landing, subject tracking, and several control methods.

According to DJI’s Flip specifications, the aircraft weighs less than 249 grams and supports video up to 4K/60fps HDR. The camera also offers an optional 10-bit D-Log M mode, 4K/100fps slow motion, manual shutter, ISO, and white-balance controls. Those specifications place the Flip well above a toy or basic selfie drone, although the Flip does not offer the Mini 4 Pro’s broader sensing and autonomy system.

The Flip folds at both the aircraft arms and the propeller guard. The folded design reduces the space needed in a travel bag, while the guard covers the propellers rather than leaving the blades exposed as they are on many conventional compact drones.
How much does the DJI Flip cost in the U.S.?
DJI lists the DJI Flip with the DJI RC-N3 controller at $439 in the U.S. store, based on the price checked August 16, 2026. The price is below $450, but the price is for the phone-dependent RC-N3 package, not the screen-equipped RC 2 version. Prices, stock, promotions, regional taxes, and bundle contents can change, so buyers should check the official DJI Flip store listing immediately before ordering.
| Configuration | Observed U.S. price | Controller | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| DJI Flip with RC-N3 | $439 | RC-N3; smartphone required for live view | Buyers who want a physical controller below $450 |
| DJI Flip with RC 2 | $639 | RC 2 with built-in screen | Pilots who do not want to connect a phone while flying |
| DJI Flip Fly More Combo with RC 2 | $779 | RC 2 with built-in screen | Frequent flyers who need additional batteries and accessories |
The Fly More Combo is no longer a sub-$450 purchase, but DJI’s listing describes it as including the RC 2 controller, additional batteries, a charging hub, a shoulder bag, and related accessories. Verify the current listing before purchase because bundle contents can change.
What does “folds” mean in everyday use?
The Flip’s folding design is more than a storage convenience. Unfolding a rear arm can automatically power on the aircraft, and folding both rear arms can begin an automatic shutdown countdown, subject to firmware and app settings.
DJI allows the automatic power-on and power-off behavior to be disabled in the app when the aircraft is connected to a remote controller. The fold-to-shutdown behavior may also fail to activate after a collision during the current flight. Automatic shutdown should therefore be treated as a convenience rather than a substitute for checking the aircraft.
After any contact with a branch, wall, ground, or other object, inspect the propellers, guards, arms, and gimbal before launching again. A propeller guard can reduce exposure to incidental contact, but a damaged guard or bent arm can affect flight stability and camera movement.
How does DJI Flip follow people?
The DJI Flip’s “follow” feature primarily means human-subject tracking and intelligent filming, not unrestricted autonomous navigation. DJI says the Flip can use visual algorithms to lock onto a human subject, but DJI also says the intelligent functions, including Subject Tracking, do not support obstacle avoidance.
The main follow behaviors include:
- Subject Tracking: The aircraft visually tracks a human subject.
- DirectionTrack: The Flip can move backward while filming a subject approaching it or follow from behind when the subject moves away.
- Front-to-rear behavior: During front tracking, a subject turn greater than 90 degrees can cause the aircraft to switch to following from behind.
- Palm-control tracking: The palm-control intelligent-filming workflow is currently limited to human subjects, not arbitrary objects or animals.
DJI lists a maximum tracking speed of 12 m/s in its Flip support information. That number is a capability figure, not a promise that the aircraft can safely stop or maintain a subject at every speed and distance.
Do not assume that the Flip can safely follow a dog, bicycle, car, or cyclist through an environment with obstacles. The dossier supports human-subject tracking, and DJI specifically limits palm-control intelligent filming to human subjects.
Is the DJI Flip crash-proof?
No. The DJI Flip is not crash-proof, and the tracking modes are not obstacle-avoiding follow-me modes. The full-coverage guard protects the propellers from some incidental contact, but the aircraft can still hit trees, buildings, wires, people, terrain, and other objects.
Automatic braking is available in Normal and Cine modes and during Return to Home. However, DJI says the Flip’s intelligent functions, including Subject Tracking, do not support obstacle avoidance. DJI also warns that the aircraft may not stop in time when following faster than 3 m/s. DirectionTrack specifically does not support automatic braking.

The entire space behind the Flip must be clear before starting the mode. A sudden subject turn can also change the aircraft’s position relative to the subject, increasing the need for active observation.
The safest operating rule is simple: use intelligent filming in an open area, keep the aircraft in sight, check the route behind and beside the aircraft, and be ready to cancel the mode or take manual control. The Flip’s guard is a safety aid, not a license to fly close to obstacles.

How long does the DJI Flip really fly?
DJI rates the Flip for up to 31 minutes of maximum flight time and separately lists 28 minutes of maximum hovering time. According to DJI’s specification test, the 31-minute figure was measured in windless conditions at sea level, during forward flight at 6 m/s, in photo mode, with obstacle-avoidance action set to Brake, until forced landing at zero battery.
The 31-minute figure is therefore not a guaranteed recording duration or a recommended landing point. Wind, cold, aggressive acceleration, Sport mode, tracking, repeated takeoffs, payload, and the pilot’s preferred battery reserve all reduce usable time. A creator filming a full day of travel or cycling should budget for additional Intelligent Flight Batteries and charging equipment rather than planning one uninterrupted 31-minute take.

| 31 minutes maximum flight time | Controlled forward-flight test until forced landing at zero battery | 31 minutes of normal filming with a safety reserve |
| 28 minutes maximum hovering time | Separate controlled hovering figure | A guaranteed result in wind, cold, or active tracking |
DJI lists maximum wind resistance of 10.7 m/s, or Level 5, and an operating temperature range of −10°C to 40°C. A wind-resistance rating does not guarantee smooth footage or comfortable control in gusts; DJI notes that the Flip’s low weight can allow slight vibration in strong wind.
The Flip’s listed maximum takeoff altitude is 3,000 meters, and its listed maximum flight distance is 14 km under DJI’s test conditions. The store comparison separately lists up to 13 km FCC transmission. Flight distance and transmission distance are different measurements, and neither should be treated as a promise of legal, practical, or safe range in every country.
How good is the DJI Flip camera?
The Flip is a serious compact aerial camera rather than merely a flying selfie camera. The 1/1.3-inch sensor, three-axis mechanical gimbal, 4K/60fps HDR, 10-bit D-Log M, and 4K/100fps slow motion give creators room to produce polished travel, hiking, cycling, and vlog footage.
The three-axis gimbal is important because mechanical stabilization helps keep the horizon and camera movement controlled while the aircraft moves. Manual shutter, ISO, and white-balance controls also give experienced users more control than automatic-only drones.
HDR is useful when the scene contains bright sky and darker foreground detail, while D-Log M is intended for users who plan to color-grade footage. D-Log M adds post-production work; buyers who want footage ready to upload immediately may prefer a normal color mode.
The dossier confirms the camera and recording capabilities above but does not verify a current app-and-firmware menu path for every vertical or social-video mode. Check the current DJI Fly version and firmware before relying on a specific vertical-shooting label or workflow.
How can you control the DJI Flip?
The DJI Flip supports palm control, DJI Fly mobile-app control, voice control, and traditional remote-controller control. The control method changes the experience substantially.
| Control method | What it is good for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Palm control | Quick takeoff, landing, and simple human-subject filming | Intelligent filming is limited to human subjects |
| DJI Fly mobile app | Convenient short-range setup and fine adjustments | Maximum height of 30 m and distance of 50 m; smartphone required |
| Voice control | Hands-free commands where supported | Not a replacement for visual awareness or manual recovery skills |
| RC-N3 | Physical sticks and conventional flight control below $450 | Requires a connected smartphone for live view and flight status |
| RC 2 | Conventional flight with an integrated display | Raises the purchase price substantially |
DJI says the app-control virtual joysticks are intended for fine-tuning position during shooting or returning the aircraft. DJI also limits mobile-app control to a maximum height of 30 meters and a maximum distance of 50 meters, according to the DJI Flip product FAQ.

What is included with the $439 package?
The exact box contents should be checked on DJI’s current product page because DJI can change regional bundles. The RC-N3 package is centered on the Flip aircraft, an RC-N3 controller, one Intelligent Flight Battery, propellers and spares, a gimbal protector, cables, and other region-specific accessories listed by DJI.
The base package should not be described as including the RC 2 controller or Fly More accessories. Buyers who need several flights per outing should compare the cost of extra batteries and a charging hub before deciding between the base package and the Fly More Combo.

What does the under-249-gram weight change for U.S. buyers?
In the United States, a drone weighing 0.55 pounds or less—less than 250 grams—and flown under the FAA’s Exception for Limited Recreational Operations is exempt from registration. That exemption does not mean every use of an under-249-gram Flip is registration-free.
The FAA explains in its drone registration guidance that a drone used under Part 107 follows a different registration framework, even when the aircraft weighs under 250 grams. Drones that must be registered, or that are registered, must also comply with Remote ID requirements.
For recreational registration when registration is required, the FAA says the fee is $5, the registration covers all drones in the operator’s inventory, and the registration lasts three years. U.S. pilots must still follow airspace, recreational-operation, state, local, event, and other applicable restrictions. The aircraft’s actual takeoff weight and configuration also matter, so do not treat the product name alone as a legal determination.
DJI Flip versus DJI Neo versus DJI Mini 4 Pro
The three drones occupy distinct positions: Neo is the low-cost close-range social-video option, Flip is the guarded gimbal-equipped middle ground, and Mini 4 Pro is the more capable aerial platform with omnidirectional obstacle sensing.
| Drone | Observed U.S. price | Camera and video | Tracking and sensing | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DJI Neo | Approximately $169 for aircraft-only/no-RC; other configurations higher | 4K video; simpler platform without a gimbal-based Flip-style camera system | Subject tracking; full-coverage guards; no obstacle avoidance | Casual close-range social clips at the lowest price |
| DJI Flip with RC-N3 | $439 | 1/1.3-inch sensor; three-axis gimbal; 4K/60 HDR; optional 10-bit D-Log M | Human-subject tracking; full-coverage guard; no obstacle avoidance during intelligent functions | Beginners and creators wanting better aerial video with a physical controller |
| DJI Mini 4 Pro with RC-N2 | $759 | 1/1.3-inch sensor; 4K/60 HDR | ActiveTrack 360° and omnidirectional obstacle sensing | Serious aerial filming and more complex environments |
DJI’s Neo store listing places the aircraft-only/no-RC configuration at approximately $169, although the dossier also records official-store signals around $199 depending on page or configuration. Neo weighs approximately 135 grams, has full-coverage propeller guards, supports palm takeoff and landing, and lacks obstacle avoidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Flip is the more capable camera platform. The gimbal, larger stated flight-time figure, manual controls, and physical-controller options make the Flip more suitable for deliberate aerial footage than Neo. Neo remains attractive when the priority is spending as little as possible on short, close-range personal clips.
DJI lists the Mini 4 Pro at $759 with an RC-N2 controller. Mini 4 Pro adds ActiveTrack 360° and omnidirectional obstacle sensing, and DJI lists up to 34 minutes with the standard battery or 45 minutes with the extended battery. The extended battery changes the aircraft’s weight and may affect local weight-based rules, so verify the exact configuration before making a legal comparison.
Who should buy the DJI Flip?
The Flip is a strong fit for a first-time buyer who wants better footage than a toy drone provides without immediately paying Mini 4 Pro money. The Flip’s guarded propellers, palm launch, foldable body, and automated filming modes reduce setup friction for travelers, families, hikers, vloggers, and creators filming themselves in open areas.
- Choose the Flip if a three-axis gimbal, 4K/60 HDR, a physical controller, and human-subject filming matter more than obstacle sensing.
- Choose Neo if the lowest entry price and simple close-range social clips matter more than camera flexibility and aerial performance.
- Choose Mini 4 Pro if omnidirectional sensing, more advanced flight autonomy, and obstacle-rich filming justify spending substantially more.
The Flip is a poor fit for dense forests, narrow urban spaces, complex indoor environments, fast sports tracking around obstacles, or professional aerial work that requires robust sensing, redundancy, route planning, or a broader advanced-flight feature set.
What can go wrong in real use?
Tracking heads toward an obstacle
Subject Tracking does not add obstacle avoidance. Stop the intelligent mode, take manual control, and use the feature only where the route is open enough for the pilot to monitor continuously.
The subject moves too quickly
DJI warns that the Flip may not stop in time when following faster than 3 m/s. Do not treat the maximum tracking-speed figure as a safe speed near objects, people, or terrain.
DirectionTrack moves backward into something
Clear the entire rearward route before activating DirectionTrack. The aircraft’s initial backward movement is an especially important preflight check.
The subject turns sharply
A turn greater than 90 degrees during front tracking can cause the Flip to switch to following from behind. Keep watching the aircraft rather than assuming the aircraft will preserve the original camera angle.

Tracking performs poorly
Visual tracking and positioning can degrade in low light, clutter, indoors, or against low-contrast backgrounds. Treat tracking as an assist for open, visually clear conditions rather than an equally reliable feature in every environment.
Wind shakes the footage
The Level 5 wind-resistance rating describes a tested operating limit, not a guarantee of smooth video in gusts. The Flip’s light weight can produce slight vibration in strong wind.
Rain starts
The DJI Flip is not waterproof. Return and land as soon as possible if rain begins, then allow the aircraft to dry fully before using it again.
The automatic fold shutdown does not occur
Check firmware and DJI Fly versions, app settings, and whether the aircraft experienced a collision during the flight. Inspect the aircraft manually and power it down safely instead of relying on the folding behavior.
What will the DJI Flip cost to own?
The aircraft price is only the starting point. A realistic ownership budget may also include extra Intelligent Flight Batteries, a charging hub, a microSD card for footage beyond the Flip’s 2 GB internal storage, spare propellers, replacement guard components, and DJI Care Refresh if the service is offered and the aircraft is eligible in the buyer’s region.
The RC-N3 package also requires a compatible smartphone. Smartphone compatibility, battery condition, heat, and connectivity can affect how convenient the $439 package is in the field. Current accessory, service, and insurance prices were not independently verified in this research pass and should be checked on DJI’s official pages before publication or purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the DJI Flip have obstacle avoidance?
The DJI Flip does not support obstacle avoidance during intelligent functions such as Subject Tracking. The aircraft supports automatic braking in some conventional flight modes and Return to Home, but the propeller guard does not detect trees, wires, walls, or people.
Can the DJI Flip follow a dog or bicycle?
The DJI Flip’s documented tracking is primarily human-subject tracking, and DJI limits palm-control intelligent filming to human subjects. Do not assume that the Flip can safely follow a dog, bicycle, car, or cyclist through obstacles.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is the DJI Flip’s 31-minute flight time realistic?
The DJI Flip’s 31-minute maximum is a controlled DJI test result measured until forced landing at zero battery. Wind, cold, active tracking, aggressive flying, repeated takeoffs, and a sensible battery reserve make normal usable filming time shorter.
Does the $439 DJI Flip include a screen controller?
No. The U.S. $439 configuration uses the DJI RC-N3, which requires a connected smartphone for live view and flight status. The screen-equipped DJI RC 2 configuration costs more.
Does an under-249-gram DJI Flip need registration in the U.S.?
A DJI Flip weighing less than 250 grams and flown under the FAA’s Exception for Limited Recreational Operations is exempt from registration. Part 107 operations, registered aircraft, Remote ID, airspace rules, and local restrictions can create additional obligations.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The DJI Flip is an unusually approachable middle-ground drone: more useful as a camera platform than DJI Neo, much cheaper than DJI Mini 4 Pro, and easier to launch and transport than a conventional unguarded drone. The $439 U.S. RC-N3 package is compelling for beginners and vloggers who film in open spaces. The decisive caveat is that “follows” does not mean crash-proof autonomous flight. If obstacle sensing is essential, save for the Mini 4 Pro; if the lowest price is the priority, consider Neo.
