The rules depend on where you fly, the aircraft’s actual takeoff configuration and class marking, and whether the flight is recreational. DJI also warns that fitting an Intelligent Flight Battery Plus to its C0-certified configuration takes it over the C0/UK0 maximum take-off mass threshold.
Start with the aircraft’s actual weight and configuration
DJI’s product page lists the Mini 5 Pro at 249 g. Treat that as the manufacturer’s stated specification, not a worldwide legal classification: the weight and class that matter depend on the aircraft as configured for flight, the battery fitted and the rules in the country where you operate.
Standard and Plus battery configurations
DJI specifically warns that an Intelligent Flight Battery Plus fitted to its C0-certified aircraft takes the aircraft over the C0 maximum take-off mass (MTOM) threshold, so that configuration can no longer be operated as a C0 UAS in the EU. DJI also says the C0-certified aircraft in the Fly More Combo differs from the C1-certified aircraft in the Fly More Combo Plus, and warns that the Plus battery on the C0 aircraft exceeds the C0/UK0 threshold. Check the label and aircraft configuration rather than assuming every bundle or battery has the same class status. These are DJI’s product and certification statements; the applicable legal category depends on local rules.
Does the Mini 5 Pro need registration or a pilot ID?
There is no single answer for every country. The United States, United Kingdom and EASA open-category system use different thresholds and conditions. The following summarizes official guidance current as accessed on 4 October 2026; check the relevant authority’s current rules for your location and operation.

| Jurisdiction | Registration or IDs | Remote ID |
|---|---|---|
| United States | The FAA recreational registration exemption applies only to aircraft weighing 0.55 lb (250 g) or less when flown under the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations. Registration is required outside that exemption; operation type matters. | Drones that must be registered, or are registered—including recreational, business and public-safety operations—must comply with Remote ID. DJI says the Mini 5 Pro meets Part 89 requirements; see the setup conditions below. |
| United Kingdom | A camera-equipped aircraft from 100 g to under 250 g requires both a Flyer ID and an Operator ID under CAA guidance. Aircraft from 250 g to under 25 kg require both IDs. | CAA phase-in dates depend on class and aircraft type: specified UK1, UK2 and UK3 open-category aircraft from 1 January 2026; UK0 aircraft weighing 100 g or more and legacy camera-equipped aircraft weighing 100 g or more from 1 January 2028. |
| EASA open category | Operator registration is required if the drone has a camera or sensor and is not a toy. A C0 aircraft is under 250 g; do not assume that classification applies if the aircraft’s configuration exceeds its class limit. | Not stated in the cited EASA open-category guidance. Check the national authority’s current requirements for your aircraft and operation. |
United States: recreational registration exemption
The FAA’s 0.55 lb (250 g) exemption is conditional: it applies to aircraft at or below that weight only when flown under the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations. DJI’s 249 g listing by itself does not establish that a particular aircraft configuration or flight qualifies. Non-recreational operations have different obligations; this guide does not determine those requirements for a specific operation.
United Kingdom: both IDs can apply below 250 g
Under current CAA guidance, a camera-equipped drone from 100 g to less than 250 g needs both a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. Do not treat the Mini 5 Pro’s 249 g product listing as an exemption from those requirements. The CAA says new models placed on the UK market from 1 January 2026 must carry a UK class mark. A drone bought earlier may not have one, so assess it using the applicable weight-based guidance.

The CAA says a C-class-marked drone can be operated as its corresponding UK class through 31 December 2027. Confirm the aircraft’s actual class mark and applicable transition rules rather than inferring class from the product name or a bundle description.
EASA open category: camera-equipped aircraft
Under EASA guidance, an operator must register when a drone has a camera or sensor and is not a toy. EASA describes C0 as under 250 g. DJI’s Plus-battery warning is therefore important if you are relying on the C0 category: verify the exact certified configuration and battery, and check national requirements.

What Remote ID means for this drone
For the United States, DJI’s Mini 5 Pro manual says the aircraft meets 14 CFR Part 89 Remote ID requirements and that “The aircraft automatically broadcasts Remote ID messages from takeoff to shutdown.” That manufacturer statement does not remove the need to meet the applicable FAA registration and operation rules.
Check the location source and preflight self-test
DJI’s manual says a DJI mobile device without integrated GNSS, such as the RC-N3, needs an external phone or tablet location source. The flight app must be running in the foreground with accurate location permission, and the Remote ID self-test must pass before takeoff. If the location source is unavailable or the test fails, do not assume the aircraft is broadcasting correctly; follow DJI’s manual and resolve the issue before flight.

UK Remote ID dates are class-specific
The CAA’s stated timetable requires Remote ID from 1 January 2026 for UK1, UK2 and UK3 open-category aircraft. It lists UK0 aircraft weighing 100 g or more, and legacy aircraft weighing 100 g or more with a camera, for 1 January 2028. These dates do not mean every Mini 5 Pro configuration has the same obligation: class, weight and operating category determine which rule applies. Check the CAA’s current guidance and the aircraft’s live firmware and configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where can you fly a Mini 5 Pro?
“Under 250 g” does not mean “fly anywhere.” The permitted location depends on local airspace or geo-zone restrictions, the operating category, the aircraft’s class and the conditions for flying near people. Check current official airspace information before each flight and obtain any required authorization.

United States
The FAA requires prior authorization for recreational operations in controlled airspace. Check FAA airspace restrictions and location-specific flight information before flying. A map or consumer app may help identify restrictions, but the FAA places responsibility on the pilot to know the rules and choose a safe, legal location.
United Kingdom
In the open category, the CAA describes A1 as permitting aircraft under 250 g or UK0, UK1 or C0 class to operate closer to and over uninvolved people under the category rules. That is not permission to fly without regard to people, location or other restrictions. A2 separation distances depend on class or weight and low-speed mode; A3 requires separation from uninvolved people and from residential, recreational, commercial or industrial areas. Check which subcategory applies to your aircraft and flight, then check local restrictions.
EASA open category
EASA guidance gives a general open-category ceiling below 120 m above ground level. National authorities and local geo-zones determine where restrictions apply, so the altitude limit alone does not establish that a site is open to flight. Check the country’s current geo-zone information and category requirements.
Quick Recap
Preflight rules check
- Identify the aircraft you will fly. Check the actual takeoff configuration, fitted battery and class marking; do not rely on the 249 g marketing specification alone.
- Apply the rule for your jurisdiction and operation. Confirm registration, pilot or operator IDs, and Remote ID obligations, including whether a recreational exception actually applies.
- Check the location. Consult the relevant authority’s current airspace or geo-zone information, operating-category rules and any authorization requirements.
- Complete required setup checks. In the US, if relying on DJI’s Remote ID system, ensure the required location source is available and the preflight self-test passes.
