Measure the headband and earcups first, choose a dense fabric that suits the pattern, and keep the knitting clear of speakers, controls, hinges, ports, and cables.
What this project covers
A knitted rainbow headphone project adds a fabric cover to existing over-ear headphones; it does not build or alter their electronics. Make published “DIY Knitted Rainbow Headphones” on March 29, 2015, crediting Andrew Salomone and describing Becca Rose’s customization project. The indexed description confirms the knitted-cover concept, but does not establish that project’s stitch pattern, yarn amount, needle size, assembly method, or model-specific fit instructions. Read the Make project page for its original instructions if available.
Before you knit: check your headphones and cover plan
Measure the actual headphone parts
Measure the headband and each earcup on the headphones you plan to cover. Shapes and dimensions vary between models, so a cover made for one pair may not fit another. Decide where the knitted piece will sit and how it will attach before choosing dimensions; a close fit should not obstruct the moving parts or operating surfaces.
Choose yarn and needles for a suitably dense fabric
Follow the specifications of the knitted pattern you are using, then check that the resulting fabric is dense enough for the intended cover. A separate tutorial by Grace Ann, “Yarny Headphones – A Tutorial,” gives one example: about 30 yards of worsted-weight yarn, size 3 needles or needles that produce a dense fabric, a foot of strong fingering-weight yarn, and a mini screwdriver. The listing describes its directions as a customizable recipe for different headphone models; those materials are not universal requirements for every knitted headphone cover.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Decide how the cover will be installed
Plan an attachment method that suits the headphone construction and can be completed without damage. Grace Ann’s tutorial uses a mini screwdriver to disassemble its example headphones, but disassembly is not necessary or appropriate for every model. If a cover cannot be fitted without forcing parts or interfering with the headphone’s construction, revise the cover or attachment plan instead.
Keep the functional areas uncovered
Leave speaker openings, controls, hinges, ports, and cable connections unobstructed. Weave yarn ends securely so they do not loosen into openings or moving joints. The available project listings do not report measured acoustic effects, so do not assume that adding fabric has no effect on sound.

How to make the rainbow design adaptable
- Measure first. Record the headband and earcup dimensions of your own headphones, including thickness and any contours the cover must accommodate.
- Select a knitted pattern and test its fabric. Use the pattern’s yarn and needle guidance as a starting point, and make a small sample to check density and stretch against the measured parts.
- Plan the color changes. Use contrasting colors for rainbow stripes. The stripe order and proportions are design choices unless you are following a specific pattern.
- Check the fit as you work. Compare the cover with the headphone dimensions and leave room for the attachment method; do not rely on another model’s measurements.
- Secure the cover and finish the ends. Install it using the method appropriate to your headphones, then check that controls, speakers, hinges, ports, and cables remain clear.
Knitted and crochet headphone covers are not interchangeable patterns
A related listing, Stacy Pamela’s “Rainbow With Clouds Headphones Cover,” is a crochet pattern, not a knitted pattern. Its measurements can illustrate why headphone fit matters, but its hook, gauge, buttons, and yarn instructions do not transfer automatically to knitting.
| Approach | What the listing establishes | What to adapt or verify |
|---|---|---|
| Knitted cover: Grace Ann’s “Yarny Headphones – A Tutorial” | Its indexed materials summary lists about 30 yards of worsted-weight yarn, size 3 needles or needles yielding dense fabric, a foot of strong fingering-weight yarn, and a mini screwdriver. It describes the instructions as a recipe for customization. | Confirm the instructions, fit, yarn, needles, and attachment method for your headphone model; these example materials are not a universal specification. |
| Crochet cover: Stacy Pamela’s “Rainbow With Clouds Headphones Cover” | The Ravelry listing describes a button-fastened cover for Sony MDR-ZX110 headphones or most headphones with earcups approximately 2.5 inches wide by 1 inch thick. It specifies worsted-weight 100% cotton in white, black, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo or darker blue, and violet; a 3.75 mm hook; nine buttons measuring 1/2 to 3/4 inch; and a gauge of 9 single crochet stitches by 11 rows in a 2-inch square. The listing labels the pattern intermediate. | These are crochet-specific instructions. Use the dimensions only as a reminder to check fit; do not treat its hook, gauge, or buttons as requirements for a knitted cover. |
The crochet listing was published in June 2015 and last updated June 2, 2022. See the Ravelry listing for “Rainbow With Clouds Headphones Cover”. The indexed listing for Grace Ann’s knitted tutorial is “Yarny Headphones – A Tutorial” on Ravelry.
