A DIY electronic hourglass is a programmable visual timer: a microcontroller detects when you flip the device, then changes LEDs or an animated display to represent sand moving between chambers. The simplest documented build uses a tilt switch and four LEDs on a breadboard; a matrix or OLED makes the animation richer but adds hardware and code dependencies. These projects demonstrate visual countdown behavior, not independently verified timekeeping accuracy.
How an electronic hourglass works
A physical hourglass measures time as sand falls. An electronic version imitates that movement: a sensor reports the device’s orientation, the microcontroller runs a programmed sequence, and the display changes over the chosen interval. The duration and visual behavior are set in software, so the project is best understood as a programmable visual timer rather than a calibrated clock.
In a basic design, a tilt switch gives the board a simple state change when the device is turned over. The program reads that input and advances or clears the LEDs. A tilt switch does not report the exact angle or motion; an accelerometer or gyroscope can provide richer orientation data, though it makes the sensing and code more involved.
Choose a build path
| Build path | Display and sensing | What it involves | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Four LEDs and a tilt switch | Breadboard, microcontroller, resistors, wiring, and a short program that sequences the LEDs. | A first electronics project with a simple flip trigger. |
| More visual | LED matrix or OLED; tilt sensor or richer orientation input, depending on design | Board-specific wiring and code; display libraries or driver hardware may be needed. | A sand-like animation, percentage display, or other visual detail. |
| Advanced | Project-specific display and sensor, potentially on a custom PCB | Schematic and PCB design, soldering, assembly, and possible enclosure work. | A compact or purpose-built device rather than a quick prototype. |
Beginner build: tilt switch and four LEDs
Keyestudio’s Project 14 documentation describes a build with a PLUS mainboard, tilt switch, four red LEDs, one 10 kΩ resistor, four 220 Ω resistors, a breadboard, USB cable, and jumper wires. It includes circuit and wiring diagrams and code. The documented behavior is a sequence of LEDs responding to the switch. See Keyestudio Project 14: Electronic Hourglass.

A separate Keyestudio tutorial uses an ESP32 board with a similar four-LED and tilt-switch arrangement: four 220 Ω resistors, a 10 kΩ resistor, breadboard, jumper wires, and Micro USB cable. Its code comments identify Arduino IDE 2.3.3. The pin assignments belong to that ESP32 setup; they are not universal. Follow the wiring and code for the exact board you use rather than copying pin numbers from another project. See Keyestudio ESP32 Starter Kit tutorial.
What the circuit is doing
- The tilt switch changes its electrical state as the device changes orientation.
- A microcontroller input reads that state.
- The program uses it to start, advance, or reset the LED sequence.
- Current-limiting resistors are part of the LED circuit; use the values and wiring shown for the selected board and tutorial.
The sample loops in the tutorials use blocking delays. That is adequate for a simple sequence, but the board may not check the switch while it is waiting inside a delay. If you add responsive controls or a more involved animation, structure the timing so the program can continue checking inputs while the display updates.

LED matrix with orientation sensing
A Hackster project describes an Arduino Nano R3 with MAX7219 display-driver hardware and a gyroscope/orientation input in its design narrative. The author also describes moving from PCB design toward a breadboard test and labels the project intermediate. Treat the page as a project account, not proof that every early design intention became a finished or independently tested feature. Its listed parts include a solderless breadboard, Arduino Nano R3, MAX7219 display-driver shield, and a generic soldering iron. See Hackster: Arduino Hourglass.
OLED with a programmed duration
Maker Pro author Mirko Pavleski describes a project using an ESP8266 microcontroller board, an SH1106 OLED display at 128×64 pixels, and a tilt sensor, powered by a single lithium cell. The project description says the animation shows sand flow and a percentage, restarts when flipped, and allows animation parameters to be changed in code. Pavleski sets the simulated flow duration to one minute in that example’s code. That is a project setting, not a general hourglass standard or a measured accuracy result. The author says an Arduino Nano was tried initially, then an ESP32 was used for stronger performance. See Maker Pro: DIY Smart Hourglass Using Arduino.

Plan for board and code compatibility
These examples use different boards, pins, sensors, and displays. Before wiring or adapting code, check the selected board’s pin assignments and the display’s interface and library requirements. Use the matching project’s wiring and code as a starting point, then confirm that each component works with your exact hardware.
- Simplest trigger: choose a tilt switch if the project only needs to distinguish its two orientations.
- More orientation detail: choose an accelerometer or gyroscope design when the animation needs more than a binary flip signal.
- Simplest visual output: choose discrete LEDs for a staged sequence.
- More expressive output: choose an LED matrix or OLED, while allowing for its driver, wiring, and code requirements.
Keep the prototype simple; make a PCB only if needed
A breadboard is enough for the basic electronic hourglass and is also part of the documented Hackster project. A custom PCB is an optional advanced route for a compact or purpose-built device, not a requirement. The Hackster account describes schematic and PCB work, exporting Gerber files, ordering boards, and testing modules during assembly; it does not establish that board fabrication is necessary for a working prototype.

What to expect from the timer
The interval is a value in the program, and display behavior is likewise software-defined. The cited project pages describe how their examples are intended to behave, but do not provide independent measurements of timing error, comparative power use, or long-term reliability. If accurate elapsed time matters, use an appropriate timekeeping method rather than relying on the apparent speed of an LED animation.
