The same connection may also carry USB data and charging power, but the result depends on the computer, port configuration, adapter or dock, cable, and display. A USB-C connector by itself does not mean the port supports video.
What DisplayPort Alt Mode means
DisplayPort Alt Mode is VESA’s standard for carrying DisplayPort audio and video over a USB Type-C connector and cable. In an Alternate Mode, the USB-C connection repurposes some of its pins and wires for another interface. VESA says the devices discover and enable Alternate Mode support using USB Power Delivery. VESA’s DisplayPort over USB-C overview and FAQ explain the standard.
In practical terms, a compatible computer can send a DisplayPort signal through USB-C to a monitor, either directly through a USB-C display input or through a suitable adapter. Depending on the implementation, that connection can also carry USB data and power.
How to tell whether your USB-C port supports video
Check the documentation for the exact computer model and port. Look for explicit support for DisplayPort over USB-C, DisplayPort Alternate Mode, or video output over USB-C. Do not infer video support from the connector’s shape, a charging symbol, or the fact that another USB-C port on a similar device works with a monitor.

Video compatibility depends on the entire signal path:
- Computer and port: The system’s graphics hardware and the specific USB-C port must support video output.
- Port configuration: Supported DisplayPort link capabilities and how the connection allocates lanes affect video bandwidth and whether USB data can operate at the same time.
- Adapter or dock: It must support the source connection and the display output you intend to use.
- Cable and display: Both must support the desired connection and display mode.

What resolutions and USB features are possible?
USB-C DisplayPort configurations can balance video bandwidth, USB data, and power differently. VESA’s overview gives examples of 4K at 60 Hz with 24-bit color, without compression, alongside USB 3.1, and 5K (5120 × 2880) without compression alongside USB 2.0. It also lists an 8K × 4K example using a 4:2:0 pixel structure or VESA Display Stream Compression. These are examples of possible configurations, not promises about every computer, dock, cable, adapter, or monitor. VESA’s overview does not establish a universal maximum for an individual product.
When a setup must preserve fast USB peripherals as well as video, check the host and dock specifications for the supported lane configuration and USB data speed. A configuration that prioritizes video may not provide the same USB data capability as one that assigns more resources to USB; the product specifications determine the actual behavior.

Choosing a cable, adapter, or dock
Direct USB-C connection
If the monitor has a USB-C input, confirm that the computer’s port supports DisplayPort video and that the monitor accepts video over USB-C. Use a cable rated for the features the devices require; a USB-C connector on both ends does not establish that the cable supports every video or data capability.
USB-C to DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, or VGA
VESA says appropriate adapters and adapter cables can connect a compatible USB-C DisplayPort source to DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, and VGA monitor inputs. Choose the adapter for the display’s actual input and the resolution and refresh rate you need. Confirm that the computer port supports video and that the adapter, cable, and monitor support the intended mode. See VESA’s FAQ for its explanation of adapters.

USB-C dock versus USB hub
A USB-C dock can provide a single connection for display output, USB peripherals, and charging, if the host and dock support those functions. Some docks also convert display protocols. A USB hub, by contrast, expands USB connections; USB-IF distinguishes USB hubs from devices supporting Alternate Modes such as DisplayPort. A hub alone should not be treated as a DisplayPort dock. VESA discusses dock functionality in its FAQ; USB-IF explains the distinction in its USB Type-C docking overview.

DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 and USB4
VESA announced DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 as interoperable with USB4 and as a way to carry DisplayPort 2.0 features over USB-C. That standards announcement describes what the specification enables; it does not mean every USB-C or USB4 computer, cable, dock, or display implements every feature. Check the specifications of the products in your signal path rather than relying on the connector type or the USB4 label alone. VESA’s Alt Mode 2.0 announcement provides the specification context.
