It is free software, but its measurement workflows require a compatible colorimeter or, for some advanced tasks, a spectrometer. The key caution is age: the DisplayCAL project page lists version 3.8.9.3 from December 14, 2019, so check compatibility with your operating system, instrument and drivers before relying on it.
What DisplayCAL does
DisplayCAL guides measurement-based display calibration and profiling through a graphical interface built around ArgyllCMS. Calibration adjusts a display toward a chosen target; characterization, also called profiling, measures the display’s behavior and creates an ICC profile describing it. The profile and the display’s calibration curves are related but not interchangeable.
DisplayCAL’s listed features include profile verification and reporting, display uniformity measurements, colorimeter correction selection, custom test charts and video 3D LUT workflows. ArgyllCMS is the broader open-source, ICC-compatible color-management system: it includes tools for display calibration and profiling as well as other device profiles, device links and 3D LUT functions. DisplayCAL offers a graphical route into a subset of those capabilities; the two projects should not be treated as the same application. DisplayCAL project page · ArgyllCMS documentation
How the calibration and profiling workflow works
- Connect a supported instrument. Choose the display you intend to measure and confirm the exact meter model and revision are supported by your software and driver combination.
- Set a target. Choose the calibration target appropriate for how you use the display. The instrument measures the display’s output against that target.
- Calibrate and characterize. Run the calibration and the profile-characterization measurements required by the selected workflow. Calibration adjusts output; characterization produces measurements used to build an ICC profile.
- Load the result and verify it. Install or load the resulting profile as appropriate for your system, then use suitable measurements to check the result.
This is a high-level description, not a guarantee that every operating system or application pipeline applies calibration curves and ICC profiles in the same way. DisplayCAL documents the workflow, while ArgyllCMS documents the underlying measurement and profile tools. DisplayCAL project page · ArgyllCMS documentation

What equipment you need
The software is downloadable; a measurement instrument is the essential physical tool for its measurement-based display workflows. DisplayCAL’s published list includes colorimeters such as the X-Rite i1 Display Pro and ColorMunki Display, and spectrometers such as the X-Rite i1 Pro 2 and i1Studio. It also lists JETI instruments and legacy models. These are examples in the project’s published list, not a guarantee that every current revision works on every computer. Colorimeter or spectrometer?
A colorimeter is the more direct fit for routine display calibration. A spectrometer is relevant to some advanced measurement needs and can be used to generate spectral correction data; it is not automatically a better choice for every user. DisplayCAL supports corrections intended to account for differences among display types, and its documentation notes that correction choice can affect a colorimeter’s absolute accuracy. A suitable display-specific correction may be available or may be built from spectrometer measurements, but no single correction is optimal for every display, meter or individual panel. - WIDE DEVICE COMPATIBILITY - Supports unlimited number of displays (per computer capability) and offers native USB-C connection plus an included USB-A adapter, ensuring seamless connectivity with modern laptops and desktop computers for streamlined use. StudioMatch and SpyderTune keep color consistent across multi-monitor setups.
- USER-FRIENDLY SOFTWARE - Features an intuitive interface supporting 10 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese and Japanese, making calibration accessible to a global audience. Existing SpyderPro users upgrade to the new software free.
Check before buying or installing
- Verify the exact instrument model and hardware revision against the DisplayCAL and ArgyllCMS versions you plan to use.
- Check that a suitable correction exists for your display technology, or determine whether your workflow needs custom spectral measurement.
- Confirm operating-system support, required drivers and installation steps for your specific setup.
- Choose an instrument type based on whether you need routine calibration or advanced spectral/reference measurements; the available evidence does not establish an accuracy ranking among current retail models.

Version and compatibility: an important caveat
The DisplayCAL homepage identifies version 3.8.9.3, dated December 14, 2019. ArgyllCMS’s documentation index identifies version 3.5.0, dated February 4, 2026. These are separate projects: the newer ArgyllCMS release does not establish that the older DisplayCAL application is compatible with every current operating system or instrument. The official material cited here does not resolve compatibility of DisplayCAL 3.8.9.3 with current desktop systems and current instrument revisions. DisplayCAL’s change history records SpyderX support in version 3.8 and specifies ArgyllCMS 2.1.0 or newer; skipping instrument self-calibration requires ArgyllCMS 2.1.1 or newer. These are documented historical conditions for that feature, not a complete current hardware-compatibility list. DisplayCAL change history
If a Linux distribution or another current operating system is your concern, an online community question about unsupported modern distributions is anecdotal and does not establish universal incompatibility. Check your own distribution, DisplayCAL build, ArgyllCMS version, instrument revision and driver requirements rather than treating that question as a definitive compatibility verdict. Is DisplayCAL the right choice?
DisplayCAL is worth considering if you want a graphical interface for ArgyllCMS-based display measurement and profiling and can confirm that your full software-and-hardware setup is supported. Its verification, uniformity, correction and LUT features extend beyond simply creating a profile. The practical drawback is that its listed release is from 2019, and the available official information does not settle support for every current computer or meter. If that uncertainty is unacceptable, first verify your exact setup with the project and ArgyllCMS documentation rather than assuming that a listed product family or newer ArgyllCMS release is sufficient.
