Is Signal more private than Discord?

Discord protects information in transit and at rest, but those protections are not the same as end-to-end encryption. In its May 18, 2026 announcement, Discord said that, since early March 2026, end-to-end encryption has been standard for voice and video calls in direct messages, group direct messages, voice channels, and Go Live. So “Discord is end-to-end encrypted” is too broad: the current claim applies to the specified audio and video calls, not messages, and not stage channels. Signal describes both its messages and calls as end-to-end encrypted. Signal on private messaging and usernames
Can you use Signal without giving people your phone number?
You can use a Signal username to initiate a chat without giving your number to that contact, but you still need a phone number to register. Signal also provides separate settings for who can see your number and who can find you by number. - You need private one-to-one or small-group communication rather than a community server.
Choose Discord for communities
- Your group depends on servers and channels to organize ongoing discussions and activities.
- You want integrated voice and video participation alongside community spaces.
- You accept that Discord messages are not end-to-end encrypted, even though supported calls are.
Using both can make sense: Discord for community participation and Signal for sensitive personal conversations. That is a practical way to match each service to its strengths, not a recommendation from either company.

- Which content needs protection? If text-message access by the service is a deciding concern, Signal’s end-to-end encrypted messaging is the relevant distinction.
- Which kind of call? On Discord, the end-to-end encryption announcement names DMs, group DMs, voice channels, and Go Live; it excludes stage channels.
