Yes. Dirty Pipe can affect ordinary Linux containers because they share the host’s kernel. Rebuilding a container image does not patch that kernel: check the host distribution’s advisory and installed kernel package, install its fixed package, and reboot as the vendor directs.
What Dirty Pipe is and what an attacker needs
Dirty Pipe, tracked as CVE-2022-0847, is a Linux kernel privilege-escalation vulnerability. A local, unprivileged process could exploit improperly initialized pipe-buffer flags to write to page-cache pages belonging to files opened read-only. If successful, an attacker could modify sensitive files and gain greater privileges.
The flaw requires a way to run code locally on the affected system. CVE-2022-0847 is not, by itself, a remote attack that lets someone exploit a machine over the network without first obtaining local code execution or another route onto it. The National Vulnerability Database assigned the CVE a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.8 (High); that is a severity rating, not a count or estimate of affected systems. NVD also records that CISA added the CVE to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on April 25, 2022, with a historical remediation due date of May 16, 2022. Those dates are historical, not a current deadline. NVD: CVE-2022-0847
Can Dirty Pipe affect containers?
Yes, when the container runs on a vulnerable Linux host kernel. A standard Linux container has its own isolated processes and filesystem view, but it does not ordinarily boot an independent kernel; it uses the host kernel. As a result, a kernel flaw can cross the boundary that container filesystem permissions are meant to enforce.

A March 9, 2022 technical walkthrough by Snyk demonstrated changes to /etc/passwd in a read-only container image layer and described risk to mounted host volumes, including read-only mounts. That demonstration illustrates the kernel-level risk; it does not establish that every container configuration, image, or current product is vulnerable. Snyk: Dirty Pipe vulnerability walkthrough
Why image updates are not enough
A container image contains user-space software, not a replacement kernel for an ordinary Linux container. Rebuilding or pulling a newer image therefore does not update the kernel used by the host or managed node. The fix must be applied to that host kernel through the relevant Linux distribution or cloud provider.

Read-only settings are not a Dirty Pipe fix
Do not treat a read-only container filesystem, a read-only mount, or non-root execution as a substitute for patching this vulnerability. They can be useful defense-in-depth for other risks, but the reported Dirty Pipe attack works at the kernel level and has been demonstrated against read-only file-backed data.
Which Linux kernel versions are affected?
Upstream summaries commonly identify Linux 5.8 and later as affected, with fixes in upstream releases 5.16.11, 5.15.25, and 5.10.102. These numbers describe upstream kernel branches; they are not a reliable test for a distribution’s installed kernel package. Distributions backport security fixes, and some releases do not contain the vulnerable code at all.

The version history is more nuanced than a single cutoff. Ubuntu explains that the first relevant change appeared as early as 4.9, while a second change needed for the described attack was present from 5.8. This is one reason a kernel version that looks old or new relative to an upstream summary cannot establish a system’s status on its own. Ubuntu: Dirty Pipe (CVE-2022-0847)
How to check whether your Linux system is vulnerable
- Identify the exact host release and kernel package. Check the operating system release and installed kernel package on the physical host or container-platform node. For a managed Kubernetes or cloud service, identify the provider’s node image and kernel as well as the guest or worker release.
- Consult that vendor’s advisory for the exact release. Look up CVE-2022-0847 in the distribution or cloud provider’s current security guidance. Match the release and package build, including any vendor suffix or backport information; do not rely only on the upstream kernel version string.
- Follow the package status and remediation instructions. Determine whether the precise release is affected, fixed, or not affected, and install the vendor-provided fixed kernel package if required. A package can contain the fix without matching one of the upstream point-release numbers.
- Reboot as directed, then verify the running kernel. Ubuntu states that upgrading and rebooting are necessary for its remediation guidance. Follow the applicable vendor’s reboot instructions and confirm the machine is running the updated kernel afterward. Ubuntu security guidance
Why vendor status can differ
Package status is release-specific. Debian’s tracker, for example, marks stretch and buster as not affected because the vulnerable code was introduced later, while listing status by release for other Debian versions. Debian Security Tracker: CVE-2022-0847
Rank #4
Red Hat also gives a product-specific qualification: it says the known PIPE_BUF_FLAG_CAN_MERGE attack vector is not available in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8, so currently known exploits relying on that flag do not work there. Its advisory also notes that the underlying initialization issue remained and that other novel exploitation could not be ruled out. That qualification applies to RHEL 8 and should not be generalized to other products or treated as a substitute for the vendor’s status and update guidance. Red Hat: CVE-2022-0847
What to do if you operate container hosts
- Inventory the Linux hosts and managed nodes that provide kernels to your container workloads.
- Check each host’s distribution or provider advisory and installed package status for CVE-2022-0847.
- Apply the fixed host kernel package and reboot according to vendor guidance; schedule workload disruption and node replacement or restart as your platform requires.
- Do not count an image rebuild, read-only container setting, or SELinux policy change as remediation. CERT-EU specifically said SELinux does not mitigate this flaw, and Ubuntu says no mitigation is available in place of upgrading and rebooting.
The 2022 CERT-EU advisory and Singapore Cyber Security Agency alert listed the upstream fixed releases 5.16.11, 5.15.25, and 5.10.102. Treat these as historical upstream fixes, not as package instructions for every distribution; use the current vendor advisory for your exact release.
