The error “DirectX 12 is not supported on your system. Try running without it” usually does not mean that DirectX is missing from Windows. It means the game could not create a Direct3D 12 device using the GPU, driver, Windows build, feature level, or launch configuration currently in use.

Start by removing any forced DX12 launch option. Then check which GPU the game is using, inspect its feature levels with dxdiag, and compare those details with the game’s actual system requirements.

What the DirectX 12 error means

Windows 10 and Windows 11 include the latest DirectX version available for the operating system through Windows Update. Reinstalling a separate “DirectX 12” package normally will not solve this particular message. Microsoft’s explanation is available in its DirectX version support page.

The failure usually occurs when the game tries to initialize its Direct3D 12 renderer and one of the following is not suitable:

msi Gaming GeForce GT 1030 4GB DDR4 64-bit HDCP Support DirectX 12 DP/HDMI Single Fan OC Graphics Card (GT 1030 4GD4 LP OC)
  • Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030
  • Video Memory: 4GB DDR4
  • Boost Clock: 1430 MHz
  • Memory Interface: 64-bit
  • Output: DisplayPort x 1 (v1.4a) / HDMI 2.0b x 1
  • The selected GPU
  • The graphics driver
  • The Windows build
  • The GPU feature level or Shader Model
  • Required optional hardware features
  • Available VRAM
  • A forced renderer setting or launch option

DirectX 12 is an API and runtime version. A GPU’s feature level describes the functionality that its hardware and driver expose. Values such as 12_0, 12_1, and 12_2 are feature levels; they are not alternative names for “DirectX 12.0” or “DirectX 12.1.” Microsoft notes that feature levels describe functionality, not performance. See the Direct3D hardware feature-level documentation.

1. Remove a forced DX12 launch option

A launch option such as -dx12 or -d3d12 may be forcing the game to use a renderer it cannot initialize. This is especially likely if the error started after changing the game’s launch settings or following a graphics-related troubleshooting guide.

To remove launch options in Steam:

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Right-click the affected game and choose Properties….
  3. Remain on the General tab.
  4. Find the Launch Options box.
  5. Delete -dx12, -d3d12, and any other renderer-forcing option.
  6. Close the Properties window and start the game.

Do not enter both renderers, for example -dx11 -dx12. That creates a contradictory configuration, and the game or engine may treat one option as a forced setting rather than choosing a normal fallback. Steam also warns that its commonly listed DirectX launch options are intended for Valve or Source games and do not apply to most third-party games. Use the game developer’s documented syntax.

2. Check DirectX and GPU details with DxDiag

DxDiag can show the DirectX version, active display adapters, feature levels, and driver information reported by Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Search.
  2. Type dxdiag.
  3. Select dxdiag.
  4. If Windows asks whether to verify digitally signed drivers, select Yes.
  5. On the System tab, find DirectX Version under System Information.
  6. Select each Display tab and record the adapter name and its Feature Levels.

The DirectX Version entry on the System tab is not a complete compatibility test. A computer can report DirectX 12 while its selected GPU lacks the feature level, Shader Model, VRAM, or optional capability required by the game. The game may also be starting on a different adapter than the one you expected.

If you need to contact the game’s support team, select Save All Information… in DxDiag and attach the resulting text file as requested by the support team.

3. Compare the GPU with the game’s requirements

Check the game’s current system requirements on its official store page or support site. Look beyond the phrase “DirectX 12.” The minimum requirements may specify a particular GPU generation, feature level, Shader Model, VRAM capacity, or operating-system build.

For example, a game may require one or more of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Feature level 12_1 or 12_2, rather than merely Direct3D 12 support
  • Shader Model 6 or 6.5
  • Ray tracing
  • Mesh shaders or another optional DirectX feature
  • A minimum amount of dedicated or usable VRAM
  • A specific GPU architecture or driver version

A GPU reporting 12_0 or 12_1 is not a universal guarantee that every DX12 game will run. Microsoft documents feature levels separately and explains that an application can request a level and fail when the device cannot create it.

4. Select the dedicated GPU on a laptop

Laptops often contain an integrated GPU and a separate NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel Arc GPU. If the game starts on the integrated adapter, its capability check can fail even though the dedicated GPU meets the requirements.

In Windows 11, set the game to the high-performance GPU as follows. This setting is available when Windows detects more than one graphics processor:

  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select System → Display.
  3. Select Graphics.
  4. Under Custom options for apps, select the game. Add its executable if it is not listed.
  5. Select Options.
  6. Under Graphics preference, choose High performance.
  7. Select Save.
  8. Restart the game.

Windows offers these choices:

Setting Meaning
Let Windows decide (Power saving) Windows chooses the preference, with power saving shown as the default label in this interface.
Power saving Prefers the lower-power graphics processor, commonly the integrated GPU.
High performance Prefers the higher-performance graphics processor, commonly the dedicated GPU.

The High performance setting does not add missing DirectX features or repair unsupported hardware. It only changes which detected GPU Windows prefers for that application. Microsoft documents this setting under Windows 11 graphics preferences.

5. Update Windows and the graphics driver

Install pending Windows updates first:

  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install the available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.

Windows Update is also Microsoft’s supported method for obtaining the latest DirectX version available for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Next, update the graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer or the laptop manufacturer. For a laptop, check the laptop maker’s support page as well as NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. An OEM driver may be necessary for hybrid-graphics switching, even when a newer generic driver is available.

Restart again after installing the driver. A driver update can change which feature levels and optional capabilities the game sees, but it cannot turn an incompatible GPU into a newer GPU.

6. Try DX11 only when the game supports it

If the game officially includes a DirectX 11 renderer, you may be able to bypass the DX12 startup failure with -dx11.

For Unreal Engine games, Epic documents -dx11 and -dx12 as renderer-selection arguments. In Steam, enter only the command supported by that particular game.

-dx11 is not a universal Windows or Steam command. Some games recognize -d3d11 instead, while others are DX12-only and do not ship a DX11 renderer at all. In those games, forcing DX11 can produce a different error or prevent startup. The spelling must come from the game’s documentation or support team.

Unreal Engine projects can also be configured to exit when a forced renderer or Shader Model is unsupported. Removing the forced option is therefore the safer first test.

  • The older DirectX End-User Runtime packages mainly install legacy side-by-side components used by older games.

A missing file error such as d3dx9_43.dll is a different problem from a game failing to initialize a Direct3D 12 device. Do not treat the two errors as interchangeable.

Recommended troubleshooting order

  1. Remove -dx12 and -d3d12 from the game’s launch options.
  2. Check the game’s current minimum GPU, VRAM, feature-level, and operating-system requirements.
  3. Run dxdiag and inspect System → DirectX Version and every Display → Feature Levels section.
  4. On a laptop with multiple GPUs, set the game to High performance at Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Options.
  5. Install Windows updates and restart.
  6. Install the current graphics driver and restart.
  7. If the game officially supports DX11, test only its documented DX11 command, commonly -dx11.
  8. If the game requires hardware features your GPU does not expose, stop changing launch options. The system will need compatible graphics hardware.

FAQ

Does this error mean DirectX 12 is not installed?

Usually, no. Windows 10 and Windows 11 include the latest DirectX version available for the operating system. The message more often indicates that the game could not initialize its Direct3D 12 renderer with the selected GPU, driver, feature level, or configuration.

Can I fix the problem by downloading DirectX 12 again?

Usually not. Reinstalling a runtime cannot add missing GPU feature levels, Shader Model support, ray tracing, VRAM, or other hardware capabilities. Install Windows updates and the correct graphics driver instead.

Why does DxDiag show DirectX 12 when the game says it is unsupported?

The System tab’s DirectX Version value identifies the Windows DirectX runtime, not every capability required by a particular game. Check the GPU and Feature Levels on the Display tabs, then compare them with the game’s minimum requirements.

Will -dx11 fix the error?

Only if the game includes and supports a DirectX 11 renderer. Unreal Engine games commonly document -dx11, but the command is not universal. Some games use -d3d11, and some are DX12-only.

Why does the game work on my laptop’s dedicated GPU but not its integrated GPU?

The integrated GPU may lack the required feature level, Shader Model, architecture, VRAM, or performance. Set the game to High performance under Settings → System → Display → Graphics and restart it.

What if my GPU has feature level 12_0 or 12_1?

That may still be insufficient. The game could require a higher feature level such as 12_2, Shader Model 6 or 6.5, ray tracing, mesh shaders, a specific architecture, or a minimum VRAM amount.

The Bottom Line

Remove any forced DX12 launch option first, then verify the active GPU and its feature levels with dxdiag. Update Windows and the graphics driver, select the dedicated GPU on a laptop, and try -dx11 only when the game explicitly supports it. If the GPU lacks a feature required by the game, no DirectX reinstall or launch option can supply that missing hardware capability.
