In the ultracold comparison studied with polar potassium–rubidium molecules, the central difference is the force between colliding particles: molecular dipoles interact over longer distances and with a direction-dependent strength, while the dilute atomic gases used as the contrast are described as having isotropic, extremely short-range, contact-like interactions. That is not a universal rule for every atom or molecule. Collision behavior also depends on species, internal state, quantum statistics, collision energy and applied fields.

What is different about the interaction?

Polar molecules: longer range and direction-dependent

A polar molecule has an electric dipole: a separation of positive and negative charge. Dipole–dipole forces can act before the molecules reach the very short distances where chemical details dominate. Their strength depends on the relative orientations of the dipoles, making the interaction spatially anisotropic. The 2010 authors of “Dipolar collisions of polar molecules in the quantum regime” described polar molecules as offering interactions that are “strong, long-range and spatially anisotropic.”

That anisotropy means collision dynamics can depend on geometry as well as short-range molecular physics. It does not mean every measured quantity must display the same directional pattern.

Atoms in the comparison: short-range and isotropic

The same paper contrasts polar molecules with the dilute ultracold atomic gases it discusses, whose interactions it characterizes as isotropic and extremely short-range, or contact-like. This describes the comparison in that work, not all atoms: some atoms carry magnetic dipole moments and can have dipolar interactions too.

How can electric fields change molecular collisions?

An electric field can induce and tune a polar molecule’s dipole moment. In the 2010 experiment, the molecules were fermionic KRb; the measured loss rate changed steeply with induced dipole moment. The authors interpreted the behavior using quantum-threshold laws and concluded that electric-field control of chemical reaction rates had been demonstrated in their ultracold molecular gas. Their particular trend should not be treated as a universal power law for other species, states or collision regimes.

As the authors put it, “These results demonstrate how the long-range dipolar interaction can be used for electric-field control of chemical reaction rates in an ultracold gas of polar molecules.”

Why quantum statistics and collision energy matter

At ultralow energies, particles do not collide like classical hard spheres. Quantum statistics and the allowed partial waves—the angular-momentum channels contributing to scattering—affect which collision pathways are available and how strongly they contribute. Fermionic KRb in the cited experiment is therefore a specific case, not a stand-in for all molecular collisions.

A fair comparison needs to specify the species, internal states, statistics, collision energy and fields, as well as whether the outcome being measured is elastic scattering, inelastic loss or chemical reaction. There is no single molecule-to-atom collision-rate ratio that summarizes these systems.

What can happen when molecules collide?

A molecular encounter can scatter elastically, change internal states, or lead to chemical reaction and loss from the trapped sample. Some reactions form an intermediate molecular complex before products emerge. A 2022 review by Liu and Ni describes KRb + KRb reactions initiated below 1 μK, direct observation of a long-lived complex, product rotational-state control linked to conserved nuclear spins, and tests of statistical predictions for product states. Those results concern that reaction system, not every polar-molecule collision.

Can resonances provide another control knob?

Yes, in particular systems. A 2023 study, “Field-linked resonances of polar molecules”, reported a field-linked resonance and described it as a way to tune elastic contact and dipole–dipole interactions. The authors observed a modification in thermalization rate and noted that rapid short-range loss makes conventional Feshbach resonances difficult in many ultracold polar-molecule systems. This is an additional control mechanism, not a guarantee that loss can be eliminated.

How broad is this picture across species?

The foundational molecule-versus-atom contrast comes from ultracold KRb work. Later findings extend the subject but should not be collapsed into one regime. A 2026 study of cold ammonia reports dipole–dipole collision dynamics and says its scattering calculations reproduce a maximum and explain scaling in relation to molecular parity-splitting energies. Its abstract does not provide enough detail to state exact collision energies or numerical cross sections here; cold ammonia should not be conflated with the ultracold KRb gas experiment.

In short, dipolar molecules can add long-range, orientation-sensitive forces and electric-field control to collision physics. Whether those features dominate a particular measurement—and whether collisions scatter, react or cause loss—depends on the particles and conditions being studied.
