Neither format guarantees permanent access or unrestricted resale. A digital PlayStation game is generally a personal license tied to the purchasing account; a disc offers a different access path that still depends on a compatible console, the game’s design, and applicable terms. The right choice depends on how you play, which console you own, and the rules that apply where you live.
Sony has also announced that physical disc production for new PlayStation games will stop starting January 2028. That plan does not affect games released, or due to release, in disc format before then.
Digital or disc: what changes?

These formats are not a simple choice between “owning” and “renting.” They provide different ways to access a game, each subject to hardware, account, title-specific, regional, and storefront conditions.
What does buying a digital PlayStation game give you?
A license associated with your account
For US customers, Sony’s terms distinguish everyday words such as “purchase” from a transfer of ownership. Sony says those terms do not themselves transfer ownership of PlayStation content, and describes the general license as personal, limited, non-transferable, and non-commercial. The license is subject to Sony’s terms and applicable law. Sony’s US PlayStation Network Terms of Service also state that Store purchases are accessed through the purchasing account and warn that closing or deleting that account may result in losing access to purchased content.

This does not mean that every account closure or service change automatically erases every game. It means access is account-linked and can depend on account status, console configuration, the content, product-specific terms, and local law. Sony also incorporates software and product-specific usage terms, so its general platform terms may not be the only terms that apply to a particular game.
When digital is a practical fit
- You want to download and launch games without swapping or storing discs.
- You own a disc-free console and do not want to add compatible disc hardware.
- You are comfortable keeping access through your purchasing account and checking the applicable digital cancellation rules before buying.
What does a physical disc change?
Access still depends on the game and console
A disc provides a physical medium and can serve as the access check on compatible disc-drive hardware. It is not a guarantee that every game’s full content is on the disc or that all features will work offline. Sony’s US terms say that during a console suspension, disc games that run without connecting to Sony’s services may still be played. That statement is conditional: a title that needs online services, publisher authentication, updates, downloads, or another external component may not work fully offline. Check the requirements for the individual game rather than assuming a disc means internet-free play. Sony’s suspension guidance explains the limitation.

Check your PS5 model before buying discs or a drive
Sony describes the PS5 Digital Edition as disc-free. Sony lists a separate disc drive for the PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 model group, but that compatibility detail is model-specific. Check the exact model number of your console and Sony’s compatibility information before buying a drive. Sony’s disc drive listing provides product and compatibility details.
Can you resell or lend PlayStation games?
Do not treat resale as an automatic advantage of discs. Sony’s European Software Usage Terms, dated January 2023, say users must not resell disc-based or digital games unless Sony and, where relevant, the publisher expressly authorize it. This is an example of Sony’s stated terms for that region and date—not a statement of the law or enforceability in every country.

Whether you can sell or lend a particular copy depends on your local law, the applicable platform and publisher terms, and any retailer rules. A used disc may have market value, but the amount depends on the title, condition, demand, and local market. There is no established universal resale value or recovery rate, and Sony’s cited terms do not establish a blanket right to resell every physical copy. Check the rules where you live before counting on resale to reduce the cost.
How do refunds and cancellation differ?
Physical games from PlayStation Direct in the US
Sony’s PlayStation Direct US policy covers eligible physical merchandise purchased from PlayStation Direct, not games bought from other retailers. It gives a 30-day window from shipment to initiate a return for refund-eligible items. For a disc game to count as being in original condition, Sony requires it to be unopened, with all security seals intact. Other retailers may have different return policies. Read the PlayStation Direct US returns and refund policy before ordering.

Digital content in the EEA
Sony’s regional terms describe an EEA example: buyers generally have a 14-day cancellation period, but consenting to immediate delivery can limit that right. Sony says digital content generally cannot be cancelled after downloading or streaming starts, subject to faults and other rights under applicable law. This is an EEA illustration, not a universal rule; check the terms and consumer protections for your country. Sony’s regional terms explain the conditions.

Sony said the change would not affect games released, or scheduled for release, before January 2028 in disc format. If buying discs matters to you, consider the distinction between a game already available or scheduled in disc format before that date and a new release after the announced change takes effect. The announcement does not say that existing discs stop working or that previously released disc games will be withdrawn.
