Aliro is a cross-vendor standard for using a phone or wearable as a credential at a building entry reader. It defines the credential and communication exchange between the device and the reader, with three intended radio experiences: tap with NFC, user-initiated access with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), or hands-free authentication using BLE and ultra-wideband (UWB). It is distinct from Matter, which governs communication and command-and-control among connected products.
What Aliro does in a building
Aliro is designed for commercial and residential access, including offices, universities, hospitality, and multifamily housing. It addresses interoperability at the opening: how a compatible phone or wearable presents an access credential to a compatible reader. The standard is intended to make that exchange more consistent across products; it does not, by itself, replace a building’s access-control system or establish that every phone, wallet, reader, and installation will work together.
The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) announced Aliro 1.0 on February 26, 2026, describing it as a framework that uses asymmetric cryptography for trusted interactions between user devices and readers while respecting user privacy. That is a description of the standard’s design, not a security assessment of a particular installation. Building operators still need to evaluate the complete access-control system, credential administration, and deployment.
The CSA says more than 220 member companies worked collectively on Aliro. That is a membership and collaboration figure, not a measure of how many buildings or readers have deployed the standard. CSA’s Aliro 1.0 announcement

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which communication protocols are intended for Aliro products?
The radio mode determines how a user approaches the reader and initiates entry. NFC, BLE, and BLE plus UWB provide different experiences; the standard’s supported modes should not be mistaken for a performance ranking. The CSA materials do not establish comparative range, latency, or battery-life results.
| Mode | Typical interaction | Technical detail |
|---|---|---|
| NFC | Tap a phone or wearable at the reader. | The CSA FAQ specifies 13.56 MHz. CSA Aliro FAQ |
| BLE | The user initiates an access command at greater range than a tap interaction; it is not necessarily hands-free. | The CSA FAQ specifies 2.4 GHz. CSA Aliro FAQ |
| BLE + UWB | Supports hands-free authentication using UWB ranging. | The CSA FAQ gives default UWB Channel 9 as 7.75–8.25 GHz. CSA Aliro FAQ |
These are intended interaction patterns, not a guarantee that a particular installation implements all three. For example, a specification request should state whether occupants are expected to tap, initiate access, or approach hands-free, then verify that the selected readers and credential paths support that behavior.

How does Aliro work with Matter?
Aliro and Matter are complementary, independent standards. As the CSA puts it, “Aliro specifies the secured use of your mobile phone or wearable in place of a key at the opening. Matter specifies how connected products communicate with each other for a wide variety of command-and-control-related smart home use cases.” A product can support Aliro, Matter, or both; neither standard depends on the other. CSA Aliro FAQ
Matter has an integration point for access-related information: its Matter 1.4.2 Application Cluster Specification, dated July 16, 2025, includes Aliro reader verification key, reader-group, supported protocol version, and credential-capacity attributes in the door-lock cluster. Those data-model attributes do not make Matter the Aliro credential exchange. Matter 1.4.2 Application Cluster Specification download page

What to verify before specifying a reader
Radio choice is only one part of a building access decision. Aliro 1.0 is designed to support scenarios without network coverage, such as underground parking garages and elevators, but that does not establish that every reader, credential workflow, or installation will operate offline. Confirm behavior for the actual products and system design.
- Credential and reader compatibility: Confirm the specific phone or wearable credential path works with the selected reader, rather than assuming support from the presence of a radio.
- Certification scope: Check whether the particular reader and credential path are certified for the intended use. CSA describes a certification program and test suites managed through Authorized Test Labs. UL Solutions says it offers Aliro certification testing, pretest, advisory, and interoperability services; confirm the current authorized-lab list and relevant test scope directly with the CSA and lab. CSA announcement and UL Aliro testing and certification
- Existing access-control integration: Establish how the new reader connects to the building’s control system and how existing credentials and operating procedures are handled.
- Offline and operating conditions: Specify what must continue to work when network coverage is unavailable, and validate that workflow in the deployment environment.
- Credential operations: Determine who provisions, updates, and revokes credentials, and how those tasks fit the building’s policies.
- Entry behavior: Choose tap, user-initiated, or hands-free access based on the site’s needs, then verify supported phones, wallets, readers, and configuration.
Development resources are not finished access readers
Manufacturers and developers can use reference designs and development boards to explore Aliro implementations, but those resources do not establish certification or suitability as an installed reader.

- STMicroelectronics: Identifies three reader configurations—NFC; NFC plus BLE; and NFC plus BLE plus UWB—and lists reference design STEVAL-ALOCKCB and software development kit X-CUBE-ALIRO. These are development resources, not evidence that a third-party reader is Aliro-certified. ST Aliro resources
- Nordic Semiconductor: Lists development boards for Aliro work. Its nRF54L15 DK supports Aliro over NFC but needs an external NFC IC with reader/writer capabilities because the SoC supports NFC tag functionality only. Nordic also lists the nRF54LM20 DK and nRF5340 DK for more complex NFC and BLE plus UWB designs. These are developer products, not finished building access readers. Nordic Aliro resources
What Aliro does not establish
The CSA’s standard description and vendor implementation pages explain intended protocols and development options, but they do not provide independent adoption, breach-rate, field range, latency, or battery-life measurements. As a result, there is no evidence here for ranking NFC, BLE, or UWB as universally better. Product availability, wallet support, certification status, and vendor terms can change; check the current details for the exact devices and region involved.
