If your phone did not receive a UK Emergency Alert, it may have been switched off, connected to an unsupported network, Wi-Fi-only, incompatible, or in airplane mode. Alerts can also be turned off in your phone’s settings. These are possible causes, not a way to identify exactly what happened to one missed alert.
Five reasons your phone may not have received the alert
GOV.UK lists the following device and connection conditions that can prevent an Emergency Alert from arriving. Check each one on the phone or tablet that was with you when the alert was sent.
1. The device was switched off
A powered-off phone or tablet cannot receive the alert broadcast. GOV.UK lists switched-off devices as unable to receive alerts. GOV.UK: How emergency alerts work
2. It was connected to 2G or 3G
UK Emergency Alerts work on 4G and 5G networks. A device connected to 2G or 3G will not receive them. Check which network your device was using; simply having a mobile plan does not establish that it was connected to a supported network at the relevant time. GOV.UK: How emergency alerts work

3. It was Wi-Fi-only

Wi-Fi and mobile data are not required, however: the device needs to be connected to a supported 4G or 5G mobile network, not actively using mobile data or Wi-Fi. GOV.UK: How emergency alerts work
4. The device was incompatible or its software was too old
GOV.UK lists iPhones running iOS 14.5 or later and Android phones or tablets running Android 11 or later as compatible. Some earlier Android versions may also work. Install available software updates and, on Android, search Settings for “emergency alerts” to see whether the option is present. GOV.UK: How emergency alerts work

5. Airplane mode was on
A device in airplane mode may not receive an alert. GOV.UK describes this as a possible reason, rather than saying it prevents reception in every case. GOV.UK: How emergency alerts work
Check whether Emergency Alerts are turned off
Alert settings are separate from the five device or connection conditions above. If alerts were switched off, the phone may not notify you even if it otherwise meets the requirements. GOV.UK recommends keeping alerts on for safety. Labels may vary by device and software version. GOV.UK: When you get an alert

How alerts reach phones—and why location matters
Mobile masts in the surrounding area broadcast an alert to compatible devices in range. Emergency Alerts work on UK 4G and 5G phone networks; there is no need to sign up, install an app, or have mobile data or Wi-Fi switched on. Location services do not need to be enabled. GOV.UK: How emergency alerts work
Alerts are based on your current location, not your home or work address. So you would not necessarily receive an alert sent for an area where you live if you were elsewhere when it was broadcast. You can check current or past alerts on the official site, or search your phone or tablet for an alert. GOV.UK: About Emergency Alerts

An alert may sound like a siren, vibrate, or read its message aloud; the sound and vibration last about 10 seconds. Alerts are intended for life-threatening emergencies such as wildfires, severe flooding, or extreme storms. GOV.UK: About Emergency Alerts

A UK parliamentary answer dated 30 September 2026 says people unable to receive alerts because of handset incompatibility or a signal black spot can still be warned through existing channels, including text or phone messages, social media, and broadcast media. Emergency Alerts complement those methods rather than replacing them. The answer identifies Local Resilience Forums in England and Wales, Regional Resilience Partnerships in Scotland, and Emergency Preparedness Groups in Northern Ireland. Emergency Alerts are one-way: they do not send feedback to the government. Not receiving an alert therefore does not show whether one was sent or tell officials which individuals missed it. GOV.UK: Emergency Alerts factsheet
A quick troubleshooting order
- Make sure the device is switched on and airplane mode is off.
- Check that it can connect to a 4G or 5G mobile network; Wi-Fi-only access is not enough.
- Check the operating-system version and install available updates.
- Search the device settings for “emergency alerts” and enable severe and extreme alerts.
- If coverage or compatibility remains a barrier, pay attention to emergency-service or local-authority messages, broadcast media, and social media.
These checks can identify conditions that might prevent reception, but the official guidance does not establish which one caused any particular missed alert. The Cabinet Office’s Emergency Alert Test FAQ, published 7 July 2025 and updated 30 July 2025, gives a figure of approximately 87 million mobile phones in the UK; that is a national phone count, not a compatibility figure or a measure of successful alert delivery.
