What happened on JetBlue Flight 1230?
On October 30, 2025, JetBlue Flight 1230 experienced an uncommanded, limited pitch-down event. EASA’s emergency airworthiness directive says: “The autopilot remained engaged throughout the event, with a brief and limited loss of altitude, and the rest of the flight was uneventful.”
Airbus’s preliminary technical assessment identified malfunction of the affected elevator aileron computer (ELAC) as a possible contributing factor. That is a preliminary causal assessment, not a confirmed finding that radiation caused the event.
What does “grounded 6,000 jets” mean?
The number appears in the opinion article’s title and framing. The EASA material reviewed for this account identifies affected configurations and required actions; it does not verify 6,000 aircraft as a simultaneous grounding total. The directive applied to specified aircraft with the affected ELAC configuration, not indiscriminately to every A320-family aircraft.

The original emergency directive required applicable aircraft to have the affected ELAC replaced or modified with a serviceable unit before the next flight. The scope and action depended on the aircraft’s configuration and group.
Was radiation the confirmed cause?
No. The official language cited by EASA is more cautious: Airbus’s preliminary assessment named ELAC malfunction as a possible contributing factor. The documents cited here do not establish solar or cosmic radiation as the confirmed root cause. Radiation-related single-event upsets are part of the technical context in Underwood’s article, but a plausible mechanism is not the same as an established finding in this incident.

What changed in the EASA directive?
EASA’s July 9, 2026 notice says AD 2026-0134 superseded Emergency AD 2025-0268-E. The later directive clarifies the corrective action and provides alternative methods of compliance. Its scope concerns affected ELAC B L104 configurations and serviceable alternatives, including L103+ and eligible subsequent ELAC configurations when permitted under Airbus instructions. The applicable action depends on the aircraft configuration and the directive’s requirements.
Operators and maintenance personnel should consult the current applicable airworthiness directive and the relevant maintenance instructions rather than rely on a headline or general summary. The cited regulatory material is not a substitute for aircraft-specific maintenance documentation.

What is Underwood’s broader argument?
Mark Underwood’s December 16, 2025 CSO Online article is an opinion piece, not an incident investigation or regulator report. He uses the event to argue for closer scrutiny of software life-cycle assurance, including test engineering, CI/CD and pipeline quality, configuration management, observability, and coordination across the software supply chain. Those are the author’s engineering interpretations; they are not findings established by EASA’s directive.
Underwood also invokes Qantas Flight 72 as historical context. The material cited here does not establish a detailed technical comparison with that event, so it should not be treated as proof of a shared cause.
