Microsoft was reported as monitoring and adjusting network routes to reduce customer impact while cable repairs could take time. The available public information does not establish which Azure services or customers were affected, the precise disruption window, or when repairs were completed.
Did the Red Sea cable cuts affect Microsoft Azure?
Contemporary reports in September 2025 associated Red Sea undersea-fiber damage with Azure connectivity disruption. They reproduced a Microsoft statement describing ongoing route monitoring and optimization while repairs were pending. The statement was reproduced in newspaper coverage, rather than verified here against an original Microsoft incident notice, so it should be understood as reported attribution, not a direct link to a Microsoft postmortem. Contemporary reporting on the disruption
The public evidence supports a broad connection between the cable damage and reported Azure connectivity effects, but it does not establish a complete technical cause or incident timeline. It also does not identify the affected cable systems, provide a service-by-service impact list, or quantify how many customers were affected. There is no verified repair completion date in the available reporting.
What did Microsoft say it was doing?
The newspaper reproduction attributes this statement to Microsoft: “Undersea fiber cuts can take time to repair; as such, we will continuously monitor, rebalance, and optimize routing to reduce customer impact in the meantime.” In practical terms, that describes managing traffic over available routes as conditions change; it is not a promise that every connection or service will remain unaffected.

Is Azure down now, and how can customers check?
A public Azure status result showed no active widespread events when it was checked for this article. That is a time-sensitive snapshot, not a guarantee about current conditions or every Azure tenant. Check Microsoft’s Azure status page for its current public view of widespread service and regional health. Microsoft describes the page as a quick reference that is updated as health changes. Microsoft’s Azure status guidance
For a customer-specific issue, use Azure Service Health in the Azure portal. It is personalized to the customer’s subscriptions, services, and regions, and covers relevant outages, planned maintenance, and advisories. The public status page and Service Health serve different purposes:

- 【High Efficiency Visual Fault Locator】Easy identification of fiber breakpoints, poor connections, bending or cracking. Excellent for finding the right fiber to splice or quickly finding a break. Our fiber optic cable tester is used for fiber tracing, fiber routing and continuity checking efficiently. It will create a bright glow around a break or fault barrier area in the fiber.
- 【Excellent Functions】This fiber optic tester is perfect for field tests because of its multiple functions such as constant output power, multi-interface adaptation, low battery warning, long battery life, and long-distance detection. Use two convenient AA batteries.
- 【Widely Used】2.5mm Universal Connector - the connector of this fiber tester is compatibly designed for ST, SC, FC, LC interferes both in the circle and square shape of different fiber optic cables. It can be used for CATV telecommunications engineering maintenance, integrated wiring system optical fiber engineering, optical device production and research, optical telecommunications, optical measurement drive engineering, etc.
- 【Long Output Distance】These fiber optic tools have strong output. The high-efficiency power supply circuit ensures a stable power supply.
- 【Crash-proof and Dust-proof Design】Our visual fault locator fiber optic is designed with stainless steel head and aluminum body to prevent crash and dust, and the case ground design prevents damage efficiently.
| Tool | Scope | What it covers | Notifications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Azure status page | Global public view | Widespread incidents and regional service health | Page updates as health changes |
| Azure Service Health | Your subscriptions, services, and regions | Relevant incidents, planned maintenance, and advisories | Configurable alerts, including email, SMS, push notifications, and webhooks |
Use the public page to see whether Microsoft is reporting a broad event; use Service Health to determine whether Microsoft has identified an issue relevant to your environment and to receive alerts. A lack of a widespread event on the public page does not rule out a tenant-specific problem.
What should Azure customers do during a connectivity issue?
- Check Azure status for a reported widespread incident, then inspect Service Health for your subscriptions, affected services, and regions.
- Compare the timing and scope of the reported issue with your own symptoms. A connectivity problem may affect access to a workload without proving that the workload itself is unavailable.
- Review your existing continuity and disaster-recovery procedures, and follow the recovery actions appropriate to your workload rather than assuming that a public status update covers every resource.
- Configure Service Health alerts for the services and regions your workload depends on, using channels that your operations team monitors.
Does multiregion design protect against undersea cable damage?
Microsoft’s incident-history guidance recommends that customers with mission-critical workloads consider multiregion geodiversity and review disaster recovery. These are general resilience measures, not guarantees against cable damage: the available evidence does not show that a particular architecture would have prevented the reported routing effects or establish that the incident resulted from only one failure mode.
