Netflix has not announced a general feature or policy for retroactively editing its catalogue. The headline refers to a July 2022 report that the creators of Stranger Things changed parts of the show after release, including a continuity correction and visual-effects work. That is different from the Netflix account setting that lets viewers hide titles from their personal viewing history.
What the report says the Duffer brothers changed
In a July 28, 2022 report, Futurism’s Maggie Harrison Dupré described Matt and Ross Duffer discussing post-release changes to Stranger Things. According to the report, a continuity issue involving a character’s birthday prompted one correction. The brothers also discussed other changes, including visual-effects work and adjustments to moments in the then-recent season.
The Duffers described some alterations as “patching in shots,” saying: “It’s not, like, story, but you’re essentially patching in shots.” They also said, “We have George Lucas’d things also that people don’t know about.” Those remarks, as reported by Futurism, point to changes to the program itself—not an editing tool available to Netflix viewers.
Does this mean Netflix lets creators edit any show after release?
No general Netflix policy or permanent catalogue-wide practice is established by this example. The available account is a secondary report of the Duffers’ remarks; it is not an official Netflix statement or a published change log. It does not establish how often episodes are changed, how Netflix manages versions, or whether other shows have been edited in the same way.

It is therefore most accurate to say that the Duffers reportedly made post-release changes to Stranger Things, rather than that Netflix introduced a general retroactive-editing feature. The report also does not establish whether additional episodes have been altered since that 2022 example.
What “editing” means for Netflix viewers
Netflix has a separate account control for hiding titles from a profile’s viewing activity. That changes how a title appears in your personal account; it does not alter the episode streamed by Netflix.

| Who makes the change | What changes | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| The show’s creators, in the reported Stranger Things example | Reported changes to program content, including a continuity correction and visual-effects work | The streamed program; the report does not document Netflix’s version-control records |
| A Netflix profile user | Whether a title appears in that profile’s viewing activity | Personal watched history, recommendations, and Continue Watching |
How to hide a title from your Netflix viewing activity
- Open Netflix’s Viewing activity page from your account and select the profile whose history you want to manage.
- Find the episode or title, then select the hide icon next to it. For a series, Netflix may offer the option to hide the entire series.
- Allow up to 24 hours for the change to reach all devices. Netflix says a title hidden this way will no longer appear as watched, will not be used for recommendations unless watched again, and will be removed from Continue Watching.
Netflix says titles cannot be hidden from the Viewing activity page for a Kids profile. Its profile guidance also explains that viewing activity is profile-specific. You can expand the activity list with “Show More” and download it in a spreadsheet-compatible format; deleting a profile deletes that profile’s viewing history and game saves.
