No official notice reviewed for this article says Comcast leaked customers’ private home Wi-Fi passwords. Xfinity’s notice describes a 2023 incident involving Xfinity account usernames and hashed passwords. Those are different credentials: your Xfinity ID password signs in to your account, while your home Wi-Fi password lets devices join your household network.

What happened in the Xfinity data security incident?

Xfinity says unauthorized access to its internal systems occurred from October 16 through October 19, 2023, and was attributed to a Citrix vulnerability. The company said it patched and mitigated its systems, then determined that information was likely acquired. Its incident notice identifies usernames and hashed passwords as involved information; it does not identify home Wi-Fi network passwords as exposed.

The notice says some customers’ information also included one or more of the following: names, contact information, the last four digits of Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and/or secret questions and answers. It does not say every customer’s record contained all of these details. The notice describes a historical 2023 incident, not evidence of a new leak in 2026, and does not establish whether any particular reader’s account was affected.

Is your Xfinity password the same as your Wi-Fi password?

Credential What it protects What to do
Xfinity ID password Signing in to Xfinity services and account settings Reset it through Xfinity, enable multifactor authentication (MFA), inspect account and recovery settings, and change any reused password on other accounts.
Home Wi-Fi password Connecting devices to your household wireless network Change it in the settings for your gateway or router, then reconnect devices that use the network.

Changing one does not change the other. Resetting your Xfinity ID password addresses access to your Xfinity account; changing the Wi-Fi password controls which devices can join your home network.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

What should you do if you’re worried about your Xfinity account?

  1. Go directly to Xfinity and reset your Xfinity ID password. Use Xfinity’s account password flow rather than a link in an unexpected message. Xfinity says a potentially compromised ID can be disabled until the password is reset. Its incident FAQ warns that direct requests by phone, email, or text to update a password could be phishing.
  2. Turn on MFA. Xfinity recommends two-factor or multifactor authentication. This adds a verification step to account sign-in; it does not change your home Wi-Fi credentials.
  3. Replace reused passwords elsewhere. If you used the same password for other accounts, change it on each of those services and make each new password unique.
  4. Review account access and recovery details. Look for unfamiliar account users, unexpected account-change messages, third-party recovery email addresses or phone numbers, unauthorized charges, and service changes. Update voice and voicemail PINs if relevant. Xfinity’s identity-theft guidance also recommends monitoring statements and credit reports.

If your notice says additional personal information was involved, pay particular attention to suspicious account activity and your credit reports. Identity-monitoring services are optional; the notice does not establish that every customer needs one.

How do you change your Xfinity home Wi-Fi password?

For a rented Xfinity Gateway, Xfinity’s support instructions direct customers to the Xfinity app. The available controls can vary with gateway model and settings, so follow the current prompts shown for your equipment.

  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.

  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
  1. Open the Xfinity app and select the WiFi tab.
  2. Choose WiFi details.
  3. Select Edit WiFi settings and follow the prompts to change the network password.
  4. Reconnect devices using the updated password. A password change disconnects devices that still have the old credentials.

Do not assume one router address or one management method applies to every setup. Xfinity’s support page describes continued Admin Tool management for XB2 and XB3 gateways, while WiFi Boost Pods and WiFi Intelligence configurations can be app-only cases. If you own your router rather than renting an Xfinity Gateway, use the manufacturer’s current instructions.
