Its headline target was support for proposed DDR4 data rates of up to 3.2 Gbits per second per pin—not a report of measured performance in a shipping product.
What is DFI 3.0?
DFI stands for DDR PHY Interface. It defines how a memory controller communicates with a PHY, the circuitry that handles the physical signaling between the controller and memory devices. The controller and PHY are distinct parts of a memory subsystem, so a defined interface can help integrate implementations from different design teams or suppliers.
DFI 3.0 was designed for the transition to DDR4. Its September 2011 release was preliminary; it described the interface protocol rather than specifying a complete DDR4 memory device or announcing a particular consumer product.
Who developed the release?
The release was a collaborative effort involving ARM Limited, Cadence Design Systems, Intel Corporation, LSI Corporation, Samsung Electronics, ST-Ericsson, and Synopsys. The DFI Technical Group said the interface was in use by hundreds of companies and had reached 3,100 downloads at the time. Those figures describe the group’s 2011 report, not current adoption.

How fast was DDR4 supposed to run?
DFI 3.0 defined methods for interfacing with DDR4 devices at proposed data rates of up to 3.2 Gbits per second per pin. The release described that ceiling as more than 50 percent faster than the then-current DDR3 standard.
That number was a design target in the 2011 specification announcement. It is a per-pin data rate, not total memory bandwidth, and the announcement does not establish that a product achieved it. Actual system throughput depends on factors such as the number of data pins and system configuration.

How did the interface address power and integration?
The specification extended the low-power interface introduced with DFI 2.1. That mattered because operating at higher speeds creates power and performance challenges across the controller-to-PHY boundary, where the two components must coordinate their behavior.
John MacLaren, then chairman of the DFI Technical Group, said the specification “eases the integration of DDR4 memory controllers and PHYs,” taking account of the complex power and performance challenges involved in implementing high-speed memory. The stated value was a common interface to support integration and interoperability—not a claim of a particular speedup or power reduction in measured hardware.

What the 2011 announcement does—and does not—establish
- Established: DFI 3.0 was a preliminary controller-to-PHY interface specification intended to support the emerging DDR4 standard.
- Established: Its stated DDR4 target reached up to 3.2 Gbits per second per pin, and it extended DFI 2.1’s low-power interface.
- Not established: Independent silicon benchmarks, a complete feature-by-feature comparison with later DFI revisions, or a consumer product tied to the announcement.
A thorough comparison with a later DFI revision would need to examine supported memory generations, controller-versus-PHY training responsibilities, low-power behavior, frequency-change handling, and interoperability requirements. The release account alone does not provide a normative feature matrix for those differences.
