Start with Linux and networking, then learn Git and scripting before moving into application builds, containers, CI/CD, cloud, and infrastructure as code. Add orchestration and deeper operations practices once you can deploy and troubleshoot a working project. This sequence builds on skills that depend on one another; it is a starting point, not a universal syllabus.

What skills does a DevOps engineer need?

DevOps is not just a list of products to learn. It combines technical work with collaboration and feedback across the software lifecycle. Microsoft Learn describes the role as involving code, infrastructure, source control, security, compliance, continuous integration, testing, delivery, monitoring, and feedback (Microsoft Learn).

The practical goal is to make software delivery repeatable: understand how a change moves from source code to a running service, automate appropriate steps, and know how to detect and recover from failures.

What should you learn first?

  1. Linux or Unix and the command line. Learn file and directory operations, permissions, processes, services, logs, package management, shell navigation, and basic troubleshooting. These foundations help you diagnose problems later in containers and cloud environments.
  2. Networking fundamentals. Study IP addressing and routing basics, DNS, HTTP and HTTPS, SSH, TLS, firewalls, and how to inspect network behavior. AWS’s beginner guidance starts its practical sequence with Linux and networking (AWS DevOps overview).
  3. Git and scripting. Practice commits, branches, merges, code review, and collaboration workflows. Learn Bash and one general-purpose language such as Python to automate repeatable tasks. Focus on explaining and automating a workflow rather than memorizing a long list of commands.
  4. Build and test a small application. Use a small service to learn how dependencies, configuration, build steps, tests, and artifacts fit together. Keep the project in version control.

When should you move on to containers and cloud?

Once you can use Git and understand how your application is built and tested, package it in a container and automate its build, tests, and deployment with a CI/CD pipeline. Learn how pipeline triggers work, where artifacts go, how secrets are handled, what happens when a step fails, and how to roll back safely.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Then choose one cloud platform and learn its core compute, networking, identity, storage, and permissions concepts. Add infrastructure as code to provision a repeatable environment. Configuration management can be useful where it solves a distinct need; it is not a reason to collect tools without a project requirement.

Learn Kubernetes or another orchestration approach after you understand containers and deployments. Orchestration is easier to reason about when you already know what is being deployed and how its build and release work.

How should you practice the skills together?

Build one end-to-end project instead of doing isolated tool exercises. For example, keep a small application in Git, automate its tests and build, package it in a container, deploy it locally or in a cloud environment, and define the environment repeatably. Add a basic monitoring signal and write down how you would roll back or recover after a failure.

A study of 174,000 DevOps-related Stack Overflow posts grouped discussions into Cloud and CI/CD Tools, Infrastructure as Code, Container and Orchestration, and Quality Assurance. Its separate survey included 21 professional practitioners, who emphasized hands-on experience, better documentation, and the challenge of rapidly changing tools (Tanzil, Sarker, Uddin, and Iqbal, 2024). The survey is small, and the posts reflect that dataset—not a universal measure of what employers want.

Which tools should you choose?

Learn one tool in a category that fits your project or target role, then focus on the concept that transfers to alternatives. Roadmap.sh lists options including AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud; GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, and Jenkins; and Terraform, CloudFormation, and Pulumi (roadmap.sh DevOps roadmap). It presents a broad skill map, not a requirement to master every named product.

When choosing between plausible tools, consider whether a target workplace uses it, whether it teaches a transferable concept or a vendor-specific workflow, the quality of its documentation and community support, how well it fits your project, and its operational complexity and cost. The sources do not establish a universal vendor ranking.

Roadmap.sh also says its ordering is not strict and some skills can be learned at any time. If you already know Linux or networking, move ahead and fill gaps as your project exposes them. Use job descriptions in your target region or organization to decide which optional technologies deserve more attention; tool choices and employer preferences change.

Where do security and reliability fit?

They belong throughout the learning sequence rather than in a final tool phase. Practice identity and permissions when using cloud services, secret handling in applications and pipelines, and patching in the systems you operate. As the project grows, add logs, metrics, alerts, and dashboards so you can observe its behavior. Learn incident response, recovery, and cost awareness in the context of a service you can actually run.

How much Linux, networking, Git, and scripting is enough?

You do not need to master every corner of these subjects before using cloud or containers. You need enough to perform ordinary tasks and investigate common failures: navigate and inspect a system, understand permissions and processes, follow a request through basic DNS and HTTP concepts, make and review Git changes, and automate a repeatable task. Continue learning when your project reveals a gap instead of treating the foundations as a gate with a fixed endpoint.

Is a book or certification enough?

The DevOps Handbook, 2nd Edition, by Gene Kim, Jez Humble, Patrick Debois, John Willis, and Nicole Forsgren is optional reading for practices and organizational context. The publisher lists it as a 528-page trade paperback published November 30, 2021 (Simon & Schuster). Reading can add context, but it does not replace hands-on work with systems, networks, cloud, CI/CD, and infrastructure code. The available evidence does not establish that a single project or certification guarantees employment.
