Prepare for a DevOps engineer interview by connecting delivery pipelines, infrastructure, automation, observability, security, reliability, and troubleshooting—not by memorizing a universal question bank. Start with the job description: the employer’s cloud or on-prem environment, toolchain, operational responsibilities, and expected ownership determine which topics deserve the most attention. Rehearse specific examples, then ask how the team divides responsibility, handles on-call work, defines reliability, and measures success.
What DevOps engineer interviews are meant to assess
DevOps work can span the software delivery lifecycle: building and testing changes, provisioning infrastructure, releasing services, monitoring production, and improving reliability and cost. Google Cloud uses a similar lifecycle-wide definition for its Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer credential, emphasizing the balance between delivery speed and reliability. That is a useful framework, not a universal job description; actual roles vary by employer and seniority. Google Cloud’s certification overview
Expect a mix of technical discussion, practical scenarios, and examples of how you work with other teams. There is no established standard interview loop or question bank across employers. A platform-focused position may emphasize reusable infrastructure and developer enablement; an operations-heavy one may give more weight to incident response and service health. Read the vacancy closely and use the interview to clarify the balance.
Google Cloud’s DORA capability framework connects cloud infrastructure, maintainable code, continuous integration and delivery, testing, database change management, deployment automation, observability, security, and organizational practices such as experimentation and visibility of work. The point is not to claim mastery of every tool: show how these capabilities fit together and where you have relevant experience. Google Cloud’s DevOps capabilities framework

Topics to prepare
CI/CD and software delivery
Be ready to explain how a code change moves from commit through build, automated tests, artifact handling, deployment, and post-release monitoring. Discuss how you would handle a failed stage, reduce risk, and recover from a release that causes errors. Depending on the service, relevant controls can include approvals, gradual rollout, and rollback. Explain the trade-offs rather than presenting one pipeline design as right for every team.
- Practice prompt: “How would you design a pipeline for a service that releases frequently?”
- Practice prompt: “A deployment passed CI but caused production errors. How would you investigate and recover?”
These are practice prompts, not verified questions from a particular employer. Google Cloud includes CI/CD and continuous testing in its exam scope, while DORA describes continuous delivery as a reliable, low-risk process and treats CI, testing, and deployment automation as related capabilities. Google Cloud’s certification overview Google Cloud’s DevOps capabilities framework
Infrastructure, cloud, and configuration
Prioritize the environment named in the posting, but explain the underlying engineering choices rather than relying only on vendor-specific product names. Be prepared to discuss making infrastructure reproducible, tracking configuration changes, managing permissions and secrets, and reasoning about capacity, availability, and cost. Google Cloud’s credential scope, for example, includes bootstrapping and maintaining a Google Cloud organization; that cloud-specific emphasis should not be mistaken for a requirement in every DevOps role. Containers and orchestration
If the job description names containers or Kubernetes, review how workloads are packaged, configured, deployed, checked for health, scaled, and recovered after failure. Practice tracing a service that is unhealthy or unavailable through the evidence available to you, and explain how you would limit user impact while investigating. The sources do not establish a universal container question set, so match your preparation to the role’s stated systems and depth.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsObservability and troubleshooting
For an incident scenario, give a clear sequence: establish user impact and scope, inspect service health and available logs, metrics, or traces, check recent changes, communicate what is known, choose a safe mitigation, and verify recovery. Distinguish observed symptoms from suspected causes; say what evidence would confirm or rule out a theory. Google Cloud identifies observability and troubleshooting in its role-specific exam scope, and Google’s SRE workbook covers incident preparation and response. Google Cloud’s certification overview Google SRE’s workbook index
Reliability and incident response
Understand how a service-level objective (SLO) can express a reliability goal and how alerting can focus on user impact. Be ready to explain how incident response can lead to corrective work and learning, not just restoration of service. Practices vary: do not assume an employer uses SLOs or error budgets. Ask how the team defines reliability and how it reviews incidents. Google’s SRE workbook includes material on SLO engineering, incident response, minimizing toil, and the relationship between SRE and DevOps. Google SRE’s workbook index

Security and database changes
Prepare to discuss how security fits into delivery: access control, secret handling, and checks on code or dependencies are useful areas to consider when they match the role. For database changes, explain how you would manage a change safely as part of a release rather than treating it as an afterthought. Google Cloud’s DORA framework explicitly includes shifting security left and database change management among its capabilities. Google Cloud’s DevOps capabilities framework
Scripting, systems fundamentals, and design
Choose a scripting language you can explain clearly and prepare a small automation or troubleshooting example. Review networking, operating-system behavior, and system design to the level appropriate for the vacancy. In a 2015 paper about Google SRE hiring, Chris Jones, Todd Underwood, and Shylaja Nukala wrote: “Operating distributed systems at scale requires an unusual set of skills—problem solving, programming, system design, networking, and OS internals—which are difficult to find in one person.” This is an observation about SRE hiring at Google, not a checklist that every DevOps interview will use. Google Research’s paper, “Hiring Site Reliability Engineers”
Collaboration and behavioral examples
Prepare concise examples of working with developers or operations colleagues, handling a difficult production issue, improving a process, and learning from a mistake. Make your contribution explicit: describe the situation, the actions you took, the people involved, and the outcome. Avoid implying that you owned work that was shared by a team, and do not claim production experience you do not have.

Questions such as “What is DevOps?”, “Can you explain continuous integration?”, “What scripting languages do you have experience using?”, “How do Configuration Management tools help with DevOps?” and “How do you ensure effective team collaboration?” appear in Xobin’s third-party compilation. - Parse the vacancy. List the named systems, tools, cloud or on-prem environment, delivery responsibilities, and reliability or security expectations. Mark which duties sound like platform engineering, operations, or a blend.
- Prepare a concept and an example for each priority. Explain the idea in plain language, then connect it to real work or a clearly identified practice exercise. Be precise about your role and the outcome.
- Rehearse scenarios aloud. State assumptions, gather evidence, explain your trade-offs, and finish with how you would verify the result and follow up.
- Prepare behavioral examples. Use specific situations that show ownership, collaboration, and learning, while distinguishing your actions from the team’s.
- Write questions for the employer. Choose questions that uncover the team’s real responsibilities, operating model, and definition of success.

- How is responsibility divided between this team, application teams, and any platform or SRE group?
- What does the on-call rotation look like, and how are incidents reviewed?
- How does the team define and measure reliability and delivery performance?
- Which parts of the delivery pipeline or infrastructure would this person own?
- What are the main reliability, security, or delivery problems you want this hire to address?
- What would success look like in the first three to six months?
- How much of the work is automation and platform improvement versus recurring operational support?
If you are comparing multiple opportunities, consider the balance of platform engineering and operational support, the environment, deployment ownership, on-call expectations, reliability and security accountability, scripting or software engineering demands, and success measures. These are useful comparison dimensions, not a ranking of employers or role types.
