Developers can submit apps and games optimized for iPhone Duo through App Store Connect now. Apple opened submissions on October 5, 2026, ahead of the phone’s stated customer availability date of October 23. Submitting early gives developers time to address review issues, but Apple does not promise approval by launch or review submissions in the order received.
What developers can do now
Apple’s iPhone Duo guidance, published October 5, 2026, says optimized apps and games can be submitted in App Store Connect. To prepare an existing app for the device, Apple recommends recompiling it with Xcode 27.1, which adds development support for iPhone Duo.
Apple also points developers to Device Hub for visualizing app behavior across iPhone Duo poses and orientations, along with updated design guidance, templates, App Store screenshot and preview specifications, and an App Store Connect preview tool. Beginning in April 2027, app and game submissions must include iPhone Duo screenshots.
Will Apple approve an app before launch?
There is no device-specific approval deadline or guaranteed review time in Apple’s published guidance. October 23 is the announced customer availability date, not an App Review cutoff. Apple says complex apps or submissions that raise new issues may need more scrutiny, and repeated rejection over the same issue or attempts to manipulate review can extend the process.

Submitting early is sensible schedule management, but it does not guarantee an earlier place in the review queue: App Store Connect says submissions may not be reviewed in submission order. Each platform typically has one app-version submission under review at a time. Developers can monitor review status in App Store Connect and request expedited review when a timing issue is critical; a request is not a promise of approval by a particular date.
Prepare the build and submission for review
Apple reviews more than app binaries: the process can also cover updates, in-app purchases, events, and metadata. Before submitting, make sure the build is final and functional, the product page and required information are complete, and reviewers can access the app. If the app requires an account, provide a working demo account or a demo mode when applicable.

- Adapt and inspect the app. Recompile with Xcode 27.1 and use Device Hub to check behavior across iPhone Duo poses and orientations.
- Test the release candidate. Check for crashes and bugs; TestFlight can help gather beta feedback before submission.
- Complete the review materials. Verify metadata and product-page information, prepare required assets, and give reviewers full access.
- Submit a release-ready build. Apple recommends submitting a final, functional app and reviewing its App Review Guidelines. Its readiness checklist is a starting point, not a guarantee of approval.
- Track the review. Watch the submission status in App Store Connect and respond to review issues. If timing is critical, an expedited-review request is available, but the outcome and timing remain uncertain.
Early iPhone Duo app experiments
Axios reported on October 5, 2026 that a San Francisco hackathon produced 73 submitted iPhone Duo projects. One example, Duo-Man, was a music player inspired by Sony’s Walkman; other projects explored using the fold as part of the software experience. The 73 figure describes submissions at that event only—it is not a measure of overall developer interest or predicted device sales.

The useful decision is whether the app is ready to take advantage of iPhone Duo and ready for review—not whether submitting today secures a launch-day listing. Teams with a stable, reviewable build can submit now and leave time to respond to feedback. Teams still working through Duo-specific behavior or missing complete review materials should prioritize those gaps rather than treat the launch date as an approval promise.

Apple’s April 2027 screenshot requirement is a separate future submission rule; it does not change the uncertainty around review timing before the October 2026 launch.
