Desirability asks whether a solution matters to people; usability asks whether intended users can use it successfully in context; and feasibility asks whether a team can build and deliver it under real constraints. A product can succeed on one of these dimensions and fail on another.

One important distinction: the familiar design-thinking triad is desirability, feasibility, and viability—not usability. Viability concerns whether an offering can be sustained within its economic and organizational conditions. Usability is a separate product-quality concern.

What each term means

Lens Core question Useful evidence What failure looks like
Desirability Do people have this need, value this outcome, and want this solution? Research into needs, context, motivations, behavior, and reactions to concepts or prototypes. People can use the product but do not care about the problem it solves.
Usability Can specified users achieve specified goals effectively, efficiently, and satisfactorily in a defined context? Representative users attempting meaningful tasks, with observation of outcomes, effort, friction, errors, and satisfaction. People want the outcome but cannot complete key tasks or make avoidable errors.
Feasibility Can the organization implement, operate, and deliver the solution with its available technology and capabilities? Technical and operational assessment, including time, capacity, distribution, and potential partners. People want the concept and can use it, but the team cannot reliably build or deliver it.
Viability Can the solution succeed and continue to be supported within economic and stakeholder conditions? Value proposition, possible revenue or funding, stakeholder incentives, and sustainability assumptions. The solution works for users and can be built, but cannot be sustained.

Desirability vs. usability

Desirability is about the value of the problem and outcome to people. It is not simply whether someone likes a concept’s appearance or says it sounds interesting. The question is whether the solution addresses a meaningful need in the intended users’ real circumstances.

Usability is about the quality of using a system to accomplish goals. ISO 9241-11:2018 defines it as the extent to which specified users can achieve specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction in a specified context of use; ISO’s catalog says this edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2023 and remains current as of October 7, 2026: ISO 9241-11:2018.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That definition makes “easy to use” an incomplete shorthand. A tool may be straightforward for one user group or task but ineffective or frustrating for another. To make a usability claim meaningful, name the users, their goal, and the conditions in which they are using the product.

Feasibility vs. viability

Feasibility concerns the ability to make and deliver the solution: technical capability matters, but so do operating capacity, time, distribution, and partners. Viability concerns whether there is a sustainable way for the solution and its stakeholders to continue. Viability is not limited to profit; in nonprofit or public-interest work, it may mean sustained funding or support.

IDEO describes design thinking as balancing desirability, feasibility, and viability. Usability belongs in the broader evaluation of a product, but it is not a substitute for viability. As Tim Brown, former IDEO CEO, puts it, design thinking integrates “the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success”: IDEO’s design-thinking overview.

How to assess all four lenses

  1. Define the user, goal, and context. Specify who will use the system, what they need to accomplish, and the conditions that matter. This provides a clear basis for usability evaluation.
  2. Investigate desirability with people. Explore needs and actual behavior before committing to a favored idea. Share a concept or prototype with intended users and seek evidence about both the need and the proposed solution, not just surface-level approval. IDEO’s design-thinking overview and the Interaction Design Foundation’s discussion of testing describe using real people and iteration as part of this work.
  3. Evaluate usability through tasks. Ask representative users to attempt meaningful tasks with a prototype or product. Observe whether they reach the intended outcome, how much effort or friction they encounter, and how satisfied they are. Use the observed problems to guide iteration.
  4. Check feasibility with delivery partners. Examine the technical and operational capabilities required, the time and distribution demands, and the role of potential partners. Surface constraints without dismissing imaginative ideas prematurely; use them to work toward a deliverable implementation.
  5. Assess viability on its own terms. Identify the value proposition, likely funding or revenue sources, stakeholder incentives, and assumptions about ongoing support. The Interaction Design Foundation’s feasibility and viability overview discusses the move from prototype toward implementation.
  6. Revisit assumptions as the solution changes. These lenses are not necessarily gates that must be passed once in a fixed order. Prototype, test, update assumptions, and assess again as the design and evidence develop.

Use the distinctions to diagnose a product idea

  • People do not value the problem or outcome: revisit desirability and the evidence for the underlying need.
  • People value the outcome but struggle with tasks: investigate usability in the specific context where the difficulty occurs.
  • People want and can use the concept, but delivery is uncertain: examine feasibility, including operational capacity and distribution—not just whether the technology can be built.
  • The product can be built and used, but ongoing support is unclear: examine viability and the incentives or resources needed to sustain it.

These lenses help teams make better judgments and decide what to test next; they do not mechanically guarantee an optimal solution. For the relationship between human-centered design and design thinking, see IDEO’s FAQ.
