What’s the difference between Denuvo and Steam DRM? Steam DRM is an optional Steamworks wrapper that checks ownership and launches a game through Steam. Denuvo Anti-Tamper is separate protection software selected by a publisher. A Steam game can use both; they are not necessarily alternatives.
How Steam DRM and Denuvo differ
| Question | Steam DRM wrapper | Denuvo Anti-Tamper |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Checks game ownership and launches the game through the Steam client. Valve says the wrapper alone is a limited deterrent. | Provides additional anti-tamper protection chosen by a publisher; it can be used alongside another DRM system. |
| Where it applies | A Steamworks feature a publisher or developer applies to a game’s executable. | Denuvo says its technology can protect games on any distribution platform; this is the vendor’s description. |
| Online and activation terms | Valve’s wrapper overview describes an ownership check through Steam, but does not establish the offline behavior of every game. | Terms depend on the game. The cited EULAs allow for a possible online connection at installation or first launch. |
| Performance evidence | The cited Valve documentation provides no comparative benchmark conclusion. | Denuvo claims no perceived impact. The cited material is not independent testing. |
Valve describes its wrapper as verifying ownership and ensuring Steamworks features work by starting Steam before the game. It also cautions that “The Steam DRM wrapper by itself is not an anti-piracy solution”: it protects against extremely casual copying and can be removed by a motivated attacker. Valve’s Steam DRM documentation says developers can add value to legitimate copies through features such as multiplayer, achievements, leaderboards, and trading cards.
Denuvo Anti-Tamper is a distinct layer. Valve’s documentation says its wrapper can be used in combination with other DRM solutions and describes applying its wrapper in compatibility mode before another DRM product. So a Steam purchase may involve Steam’s wrapper, Denuvo, both, or neither; Steam availability alone does not prove which protections a particular title uses.
Does Denuvo require an internet connection?
There is no safe answer that applies to every Denuvo-protected game. The cited game EULAs describe a possible internet connection during installation or first launch, but those terms belong to the specific products and do not establish a universal Denuvo requirement.

What the cited EULAs say
- Ubisoft’s cited EULA: It says DRM software may limit installations, install additional components, require a connection at installation or first launch, and leave some Anti-Tamper files after uninstall. For that product, it specifies no overall computer limit but permits activation on five distinct computers in a 24-hour period. This is a product-specific term, not a general Denuvo limit. Read the Ubisoft EULA.
- SEGA’s cited EULA: It says the product may use Denuvo Anti-Tamper and describes possible installation limits, additional components, a possible connection at installation or first launch, and files that may remain after uninstall. These terms do not establish the conditions for every Denuvo-protected title. Read the SEGA EULA.
Can you play offline?
Check the current EULA and publisher support information for the exact game. A storefront listing or the Denuvo label alone does not establish whether that title can be launched offline, how long offline play lasts, or whether a connection is needed again after activation.
Does Denuvo affect performance?
The cited material does not establish a universal performance result. Denuvo’s 2023 datasheet says “No perceived impact,” but that is a vendor claim, not independent verification. The available sources do not support saying that Denuvo always reduces performance, never affects it, or has a particular average frame-rate cost. Denuvo’s Anti-Tamper datasheet.

A title-specific performance comparison would require independent tests of the same game version on comparable hardware, with and without the protection. Without that, anecdotes or results from another game cannot establish the effect for your system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you tell whether a game uses Denuvo?
- Check the game’s current store disclosures and publisher support pages for an explicit mention of Denuvo or Anti-Tamper.
- Read the game’s current EULA, especially its sections on DRM, activation, internet access, installation limits, and uninstall behavior.
- If a restriction is unclear, ask the publisher about that specific title. Do not infer activation or offline-play rules from another game’s EULA.
Denuvo’s 2023 datasheet reports a “180-day average crack-free period” and “1,000+ games protected.” These are figures stated by Denuvo, not independently verified results or guarantees for any individual game.
