The old HMR flag is no longer the current command: Deno later stabilized the feature as --watch-hmr, and deno watch is now its shorthand.
What Deno 1.38 added
Deno’s November 2, 2023, 1.38 release introduced two developer-facing features: static HTML output from deno doc and experimental HMR for running programs. They address different tasks: the first produces documentation pages; the second changes how a running program responds to source edits.
Generate browsable HTML documentation
In Deno 1.38, use deno doc --html to generate a static site containing documentation for a project. This is useful when terminal output is not the format you want to read or share: the generated pages are browsable HTML documentation. The command generates the site; the release announcement does not describe it as hosting or deploying the result.
Enable HMR: the 1.38 command and the current one
| Context | Command | Status and behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Deno 1.38 release-era syntax | deno run --unstable-hmr mod.ts |
Experimental interface. It attempted to patch changed modules in place and preserve process state; some edits required a full restart. |
| Current HMR syntax | deno run --watch-hmr main.ts |
HMR is stable. Changed modules are hot-replaced where possible, with a full restart if replacement fails. |
| Current shorthand | deno watch main.ts |
Current CLI documentation says this is equivalent to deno run --watch-hmr main.ts. |
Deno announced HMR as stable in Deno 1.46 on August 22, 2024, identifying that release as the final 1.x release. For present-day instructions, follow the current watch-mode documentation rather than copying the 1.38 experimental flag.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What HMR preserves—and when Deno restarts
Plain --watch restarts the process when a watched file changes. HMR instead attempts to replace changed modules in the running process, which can keep application state across edits when the changes can be applied safely. It is not a guarantee that every edit will be patched: Deno may do a full restart when hot replacement fails.
The 1.38 announcement specifically cautioned that edits such as changing a top-level symbol or changing an async function that is currently running may not be safe to apply in place. Treat state continuity as conditional, not as a promise that all in-progress work or state survives every source change.

What Deno watches, and an editor caveat on Linux
For deno run and deno test, current watch-mode docs say Deno watches the entrypoint and its statically imported local files. You can provide additional paths to watch or use --watch-exclude to omit paths or patterns. Consult the watch-mode guide for the precise options for your command.
On Linux, an editor’s atomic-save behavior can replace a file through a temporary-file rename and detach the watcher HMR is using. After the first edit, later changes may then go unnoticed. Deno’s documented workarounds include disabling atomic save in Helix or setting backupcopy=yes in Neovim or Vim. Ordinary restart-on-change --watch is unaffected by this particular issue because a restart establishes watchers again.

Which command should you use?
- To generate static API documentation with Deno 1.38, use
deno doc --html. - To follow the 1.38 HMR example for historical context, the flag was
deno run --unstable-hmr mod.ts. - For current HMR, use
deno run --watch-hmr main.tsor its documented shorthand, deno watch main.ts. - If you prefer a fresh process after each watched change, use restart-on-change watch mode rather than HMR.
