Unauthorized parties misused a Danish company’s lawful access to the country’s Central Person Register (CPR) and accessed names, addresses, CPR numbers and other data connected to about 8.8 million registered people, Denmark’s Ministry of Research, Education and Digitalisation said on 5 October 2026. The reported figure is not the number of current Danish residents: the Ministry says the CPR contains about 11 million registered people, including people who have died or moved abroad. The access was stopped, but the technical cause, responsibility and final scope were still under investigation in official notices dated 5–6 October 2026.
What happened in the Denmark CPR data incident?
The Ministry said unauthorized parties misused a Danish company’s access to search the CPR system. The company had access lawfully in principle, but the reported activity was an abuse of that access—not an official claim that the CPR system itself was breached. The Ministry described access to names, addresses, CPR numbers and other data for about 8.8 million registered people. Ministry of Research, Education and Digitalisation, 5 October 2026
The Ministry said a business with a legitimate interest may request information about a larger, defined group of people whom it has identified individually in advance, subject to data-protection law. Authorities said the incident involved misuse of that permitted access. Ministry explanation of CPR access rules, 5 October 2026
How many people were affected—and what does the number mean?
The Ministry’s estimate is about 8.8 million registered people whose data was accessed. It also says the CPR contains about 11 million registered people, including people who have died and people who have moved abroad. These are register totals, not counts of current Danish residents. Was your CPR number exposed?
The public statements describe access to CPR numbers and other data for about 8.8 million registered people, but they do not identify individuals whose records were accessed. They also do not provide a way for a person to confirm from the notice alone whether their particular CPR number was among the accessed records. Avoid treating the overall figure as proof that a specific person’s record was accessed—or as proof that it was not.
What should you do after the incident?
The Ministry’s advice is to be cautious with unexpected contact. Do not give passwords or other confidential information to someone who contacts you by phone, email or a similar channel—even if the person appears to know your name, address or CPR number. Familiar details do not prove that a caller or sender is legitimate. Ministry digital-safety advice, 5 October 2026
