What is demand forecasting?
Demand forecasting is the process of estimating future customer demand for products or services over a defined time horizon. Microsoft describes its role as predicting demand to estimate revenue and support strategic and operational planning; GS1 US emphasizes using expected customer demand to plan inventory, staffing, production, and warehouse operations. Microsoft Learn and GS1 US provide these definitions.
A forecast is an estimate, not a commitment or an automatic instruction to order or produce a particular quantity. Teams use it alongside operational constraints and planning rules to decide what action to take.
Why is demand forecasting important?
Forecasting gives teams a shared estimate to coordinate purchasing, production, staffing, warehouse capacity, and inventory. Without a forward-looking estimate, those functions may plan from different assumptions or react only after demand changes.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Inventory and cash: Better-informed estimates can help organizations avoid holding more buffer stock than they need and reduce money tied up in inventory.
- Procurement and production: Anticipating demand can help teams plan purchases and production earlier, potentially avoiding some expedited costs.
- Service and capacity: Forecasts can inform staffing and warehouse preparation, helping organizations align capacity with expected orders.
- Lead times: Microsoft notes that improved certainty about expected demand may help reduce fulfillment lead times.
These are potential benefits, not guaranteed outcomes. Results also depend on supply constraints, lead times, promotions, planning policies, and how organizations act on the estimate. Microsoft outlines these possible benefits in its demand planning overview.
Which demand forecasting methods can organizations use?
There is no single best method for every business. The choice depends on the amount and relevance of historical data, the demand pattern, the forecast horizon, available contextual inputs, and how much explanation or expert judgment the decision requires. CIPS discusses qualitative and quantitative techniques, while Microsoft documents specific statistical and machine-learning options in its product. CIPS and Microsoft Learn.

| Approach | What it uses | When it can help | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expert opinion and market surveys | Knowledge of the market, customer feedback, or structured surveys | When historical demand is limited or people have relevant context not captured in the data | Opinions can be biased and subject to human error, according to CIPS. |
| Delphi method | Repeated questionnaires answered by an expert panel | When historical information is absent and a structured expert view is useful | It depends on the selected experts and their judgments. |
| Time-series methods | Historical demand patterns over time | When past observations are relevant to the future period being forecast | Weak, incomplete, or no-longer-relevant history can undermine the estimate. |
| Statistical and machine-learning models | Historical data and, for some models, several input variables | When the demand question and available data fit the model’s assumptions and capabilities | Model suitability varies; Microsoft’s model descriptions are product guidance, not a universal ranking. |
Examples of models in Microsoft documentation
Microsoft documents auto-ARIMA for stationary data, ETS for simpler cases and different trend or seasonal patterns, Prophet for complex real-world data, and XGBoost when multiple inputs are used. Its best-fit option selects a model for each product-and-dimension combination. These are options within Microsoft’s demand-planning product, not evidence that one model is best for every organization or dataset. See Microsoft’s forecast model documentation.
How does demand forecasting work in practice?
A practical process defines the decision the forecast must support, creates an estimate from relevant data, reviews it, and checks how it performed. Microsoft documents a Supply Chain Management workflow that uses historical transactions to generate a statistical baseline, then supports visualization, manual adjustment, authorization for planning, accuracy measurement, and removal of historical outliers. Exact steps differ between systems and organizations. Microsoft Learn’s overview.

- Define the question. Specify what is being forecast—such as a product or service, and the relevant location or business dimension—and which decision the estimate will inform.
- Choose a horizon that matches the decision. A forecast should cover the period needed for the purchasing, production, staffing, or capacity decision at hand.
- Build a baseline. Use relevant historical transactions and an appropriate method to generate an initial estimate.
- Review and adjust with care. Visualize the baseline and incorporate justified information that the model may not capture. Record or govern adjustments so the planning figure is clear.
- Authorize the forecast for planning. Treat the reviewed estimate as an input to operational plans, rather than assuming the raw model output is automatically a final order or production instruction.
- Measure outcomes and improve the inputs. Compare forecasts with actual demand, assess accuracy, and investigate outliers or changed conditions before revising the approach.
What happens when a forecast is wrong?
Forecast error can cause problems in either direction, but the forecast alone does not determine the outcome.
- Over-forecasting can contribute to surplus inventory and excess cash tied up in stock.
- Under-forecasting can contribute to stockouts, missed orders, or insufficient staffing and capacity.
In a supply chain, demand signals can also become distorted as they move upstream between organizations. CIPS describes this as the bullwhip effect and links it with excess inventory, poor customer service, cash-flow problems, stockouts, and high materials costs. Forecasting is not a cure for that effect: ordering behavior, promotions, lead times, supply limits, and coordination between businesses also influence outcomes. What should readers know about forecasting statistics?
Microsoft’s demand-planning product overview says that over 85 percent of demand planners are not data scientists. Microsoft does not state a date for that figure on the retrieved overview, and it is a vendor statement about the audience for its planning tools—not an independently verified estimate of all demand planners. Microsoft Learn.
There is no established general percentage for how much demand forecasting improves accuracy, reduces inventory, or increases revenue. Treat claims about those outcomes as dependent on the organization, its data, and the way it uses forecasts.
