The Dell Precision 3510 is a configurable 15-inch mobile workstation, not one fixed specification. Its processor, graphics, screen, storage, battery, and Thunderbolt availability vary by unit, so its usefulness depends on the exact configuration. Dell’s launch-era specifications list options including Core i5, Core i7, and Xeon processors, Intel integrated graphics or AMD FirePro W5130M, and HD TN or Full HD IPS displays. For a used 3510, verify those details before judging its performance or planning an upgrade.
What is the Dell Precision 3510?
The Precision 3510 is the model 3510 in Dell’s Precision 3000 Series: a 15.6-inch mobile workstation offered in multiple configurations. Dell’s specification sheet describes a range of original factory options; it does not establish which parts are installed in any particular second-hand machine.
That distinction matters in practice. Two 3510s can have different processors, graphics, display panels, storage interfaces, batteries, and ports. A model name alone is not enough to infer performance, screen quality, upgrade compatibility, or Thunderbolt support.

These are launch-era manufacturer-listed options and limits, not measurements of every configuration. Dell also lists a 130 W adapter, dimensions of 14.61 inches wide by 9.94 inches deep, and a starting weight of 4.92 lb for the HD non-touch version with the four-cell battery; the starting weight should not be applied to other configurations. How does performance hold up?
Notebookcheck reviewed a 3510 with a Core i7-6700HQ and AMD FirePro W5130M. In that particular 2016-era review, it reported 26 fps in its Siemens NX SPECviewperf test and 22 fps in Maya. These workload-specific results describe the tested system, not all 3510 configurations, current application versions, or every thermal and driver condition. The review’s Precision 3510 test results are most useful as historical context for that hardware combination.
For a used workstation, compare the actual processor and graphics hardware with the work you intend to do. A unit with integrated graphics is not equivalent to the FirePro-equipped review sample, and an old benchmark score should not be treated as a guarantee of present-day application speed.
Which screen does a Precision 3510 have?
Dell offered both a 1366 × 768 TN panel and 1920 × 1080 IPS panels, including a Full HD touch option. The panel is one of the most consequential differences between units: check the resolution and panel details rather than relying on a listing that only says “15.6-inch.”

Notebookcheck criticized the low-resolution TN panel in its reviewed configuration. That criticism should not be generalized to the Full HD IPS versions, which are a different display option. Before buying, inspect the screen in person if possible and verify the exact resolution and touch capability in the system information or seller documentation.

Can you upgrade the Precision 3510’s SSD?
Yes, Dell documents M.2 PCIe NVMe storage as an option up to 1 TB and provides a service procedure for installing an optional PCIe SSD in its owner’s manual. Dell also lists M.2 SATA and 2.5-inch drive configurations, so do not assume every 3510 contains the same drive or accepts a replacement using the same interface.
- Confirm the installed storage and configuration using the BIOS, system report, or physical inspection.
- Identify the drive’s form factor and interface before choosing a replacement. For an NVMe upgrade, search for an “M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD for Dell Precision 3510,” then verify the specific drive’s physical fit and interface compatibility.
- Follow Dell’s service instructions for the relevant component and configuration. The manual describes access procedures; it does not validate every current retail SSD listing.
The bottom cover is screw-fastened. Notebookcheck and StorageReview report that removing it provides access to internal components, including storage and memory; this is not evidence that the machine is tool-free or that every component is interchangeable. Does the Precision 3510 have Thunderbolt?
Thunderbolt 3 is optional, not standard across every 3510. Dell lists an optional Thunderbolt 3 Type-C port as well as a docking connector. Notebookcheck’s reviewed unit included Thunderbolt 3, but that review configuration does not prove that a different machine has it.
If you need a Thunderbolt dock or display connection, confirm Thunderbolt on the exact unit through its system information and ports before buying accessories. Do not treat the presence of a Type-C-shaped connector alone as confirmation of Thunderbolt.

Can you replace the battery?
Dell lists 62 Wh four-cell and 84 Wh six-cell battery configurations, and its manual documents service procedures. Identify the installed battery and configuration before sourcing a replacement; these sources do not establish a current compatible replacement SKU or the validity of any seller’s stock.

Battery choice also relates to storage layout. StorageReview notes that the 2.5-inch drive area and the larger 84 Wh battery compete for space in the reviewed design. Check the actual machine’s battery and drive arrangement rather than assuming that both options are present together.

Ask the seller for a BIOS or system report and clear photos where needed. Use the following checklist to evaluate the configuration against your workload:
- Exact processor and graphics hardware, including whether a FirePro W5130M is installed.
- Display resolution, panel type if documented, and touch capability.
- Installed RAM, storage capacity, drive form factor, and interface.
- Battery type and a battery-health report.
- Thunderbolt 3 confirmation if required, plus the condition of the other ports and docking connector.
- Condition of the machine and confirmation that the correct charger is included.
When comparing candidates, match processor and graphics, screen, installed memory and storage, battery health, required connectivity, and physical condition. Compare independent benchmark numbers only when the tested configurations and workloads are sufficiently similar.
Verdict
The Precision 3510 can make sense as a used workstation when its specific configuration fits the intended work and its condition is verified. Its modular configuration range is also its main buying complication: the low-resolution TN screen, integrated graphics, limited storage arrangement, or lack of Thunderbolt may be decisive for one buyer and irrelevant to another. Check the exact machine rather than buying on the model name alone.
