Delhi’s approved Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) is planned to detect congestion and road incidents, adjust traffic signals, share travel information and help police identify stolen or flagged vehicles. It is a planned Delhi Police project—not a citywide system confirmed to be operating today.
What Delhi has approved
On 30 September 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the Delhi Police ITMS project at an estimated cost of ₹1,789.52 crore, inclusive of taxes. The Government of India’s announcement sets out a planned footprint of 42 identified traffic corridors, implementation in three phases over 24 months, and five years of operation and maintenance after implementation. The release does not specify when each corridor or feature will become operational.
The announcement cites around 71 lakh active registered vehicles in Delhi as background to the project. It describes an integrated traffic-management system, not a consumer app or a device for individual drivers. Government of India Press Information Bureau, 30 September 2026.

Detect congestion and road incidents
The government says the system will use real-time traffic data to identify congestion, slow-moving traffic and road incidents. That information is intended to help police respond and arrange diversions more quickly. The announcement does not specify detection accuracy, response-time targets or measured results.

Coordinate signals and emergency movement
Adaptive signals are planned to adjust timing to traffic conditions and coordinate signals along the identified corridors. The project also intends to enable priority movement and green corridors for ambulances and other emergency vehicles.
Share traffic conditions with travelers
Variable Message Signs and digital platforms are planned to provide information about congestion, diversions, parking availability and traffic conditions. The government says information may also be shared with navigation providers; the announcement does not name providers or describe when that sharing will begin.

Support automated enforcement
The proposed system is intended to detect violations including red-light and stop-line violations, speeding, wrong-way driving, helmet or seat-belt non-use, illegal parking and mobile-phone use while driving. These are announced capabilities, not evidence that automated enforcement through the new ITMS is already active citywide.

Bring operations onto a common platform

How stolen-vehicle alerts are expected to work
The official approval announcement says AI-based analytics will assist in identifying stolen, hot-listed and blacklisted vehicles, repeat violators, and vehicles connected with hit-and-run incidents. It does not spell out the alert workflow or name the databases involved.
Hindustan Times reported on 3 October 2026 that, according to Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sanjay Tyagi, a stolen-vehicle FIR is expected to trigger an alert through the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) to the traffic inspector responsible for the area. The newspaper also reported anticipated movement alerts for traffic-zone officers and integration with CCTNS, e-Sarathi and VAHAN. Those workflow and integration details are attributed to the newspaper’s reporting, not specified in the Cabinet announcement. Hindustan Times report, 3 October 2026.

Hindustan Times, citing police data, reported 35,014 motor vehicle theft cases registered in Delhi in 2025. That figure is context for why vehicle identification may matter; it is not a measure of how many vehicles the planned ITMS will recover.

What commuters can use now—and what is not confirmed live
Delhi Traffic Police’s public website currently displays live traffic status, traffic alerts and advisories, and a service to check towed or impounded vehicles. These existing services are separate from the newly approved ITMS and do not show that its planned corridor-wide features are operational. Delhi Traffic Police official website.
The approval release confirms the project’s scope and planned rollout, but does not establish that all 42 corridors or any particular new feature are live. It also does not name a selected supplier or provide procurement-award details. No before-and-after results for congestion, crashes, police response or vehicle recovery are reported in the cited announcement.
What the project figures do—and do not—tell you
- ₹1,789.52 crore: the government’s estimated approved project cost, inclusive of taxes—not a per-corridor cost.
- 42 corridors: the planned coverage described as identified traffic corridors; this does not mean all Delhi roads are covered.
- Three phases over 24 months, then five years of operation and maintenance: the announced implementation and O&M plan, not a confirmation that deployment has begun or a date for citywide activation.
