Choose a dehumidifier for persistently high humidity, dampness, or condensation. Choose an air purifier for airborne particles such as dust, pollen, or smoke. They solve different problems, and neither fixes the source of moisture or pollution.
What is the difference between a dehumidifier and an air purifier?
| Decision point | Dehumidifier | Air purifier |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Reduce excess moisture and relative humidity. | Filter airborne contaminants, especially particles. |
| What to check | Humidity readings, condensation, dampness, and possible water intrusion. | Room area, clean air delivery rate (CADR), pollutant type, and filter design. |
| What it cannot do | Repair leaks or remove existing mold. | Lower humidity, repair leaks, or address the cause of mold or moisture. |
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes portable air cleaners as devices that filter air in a single room or area; they cannot remove every pollutant. Filtration is a supplement, not a substitute for controlling pollutant sources and ventilating.
Which one do you need?
Choose a dehumidifier for ongoing dampness
If a room feels persistently damp, windows regularly collect condensation, or a humidity meter repeatedly shows high relative humidity, investigate the cause. EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%, and suggests using a humidity meter to measure it. The ideal range is a target, not a guarantee against mold.
Look for leaks, water intrusion, or ventilation problems and address them. If humidity remains high, a dehumidifier can help reduce it. Compare the manufacturer’s stated room coverage and moisture-removal specifications with your room and conditions; EPA’s cited guidance does not provide a universal capacity-sizing table.

Choose an air purifier for airborne particles
For dust, pollen, smoke, or other airborne particles in a particular room, consider a portable air purifier with a particle CADR suited to that room. CADR indicates how quickly a cleaner filters particles; a higher rating generally serves a larger area. It does not rate gas removal.
EPA says people spend about 90% of their time indoors, so much exposure to airborne pollutants occurs at home. That makes source control and appropriate filtration useful considerations, but it does not mean a purifier removes every pollutant or guarantees health benefits.

If you have both problems
Both appliances may have a role because one manages moisture while the other filters airborne particles. Address leaks or persistent moisture first, then assess whether a purifier is appropriate for particles that remain in the room.
How to choose and use an air purifier
- Measure the room. Multiply its length by its width to get the floor area, then compare that area with the cleaner’s recommended room size and CADR.
- Match the rating to the pollutant. CADR ratings are for particles. If you want to reduce gases or odors, look for activated carbon or another filter specifically designed for gases. EPA notes there is no widely used performance-rating system for portable gas-removal filters.
- Account for ceiling height. EPA’s example CADR estimates assume an 8-foot ceiling; a higher ceiling may call for a larger unit.
- Consider real-world operation. CADR is typically measured at the highest fan speed, which may be noisy. Compare operating noise and filter-replacement needs, and choose a unit you can run as needed.
- Avoid ozone generators. EPA identifies ozone as a lung irritant; avoid portable cleaners that intentionally produce it.
Air cleaners may capture some mold-related particles, but they do not address why mold is growing or resolve a moisture problem. EPA says filtration does not replace pollutant control and ventilation, and it does not certify or recommend particular brands or models.

What to do about mold, leaks, or water damage
Neither appliance is a mold-removal solution. EPA’s guidance puts it plainly: “The key to mold control is moisture control.” Fix the water problem and clean visible mold. If the affected area is large or there is extensive water damage, consult EPA’s mold and moisture guidance.
A dehumidifier may help manage humidity after the source is addressed; an air purifier may filter some airborne particles. Neither substitutes for repairing a leak or cleaning mold.

What each appliance can—and cannot—do
- Dehumidifier: reduces excess humidity; it does not repair a leak or clean existing mold.
- Air purifier: filters some airborne contaminants; it does not lower humidity, and no cleaner or filter eliminates all pollutants.
- Both: may supplement moisture management and source control, but do not replace fixing building problems, cleaning mold, or appropriate ventilation.
