Deep-tech startups typically need more patient financing and take longer to move between funding stages than other technology companies. The OECD reports an average gap of 25–40% longer between stages, attributing that statistic to BCG (2023); it also reports higher failure risk at each stage. That comparison is about fundraising intervals—not total company lifespan or a guaranteed time to revenue. Software can often reach market more easily or quickly, but it is not automatically cheap to build, scale, or sell.
What counts as deep-tech or software?
Deep-tech is a broad venture category covering science- and engineering-intensive businesses, including ventures built on key enabling technologies. Software startups are just as varied: a simple online service, enterprise platform, or product operating in a regulated market can have very different costs and sales cycles. The useful comparison is therefore about common financing pressures and milestones, not a prediction for every company.
For founders, investors, and people evaluating startup risk, the central distinction is often what must be proven before customers and conventional financial metrics can validate the business.
How do their funding needs differ?
Deep-tech may need capital before standard traction exists
Innovative startups can spend a prolonged period developing an offering before revenue arrives. Deep-tech ventures may need to finance technical development and demonstrate that the technology works while also establishing that customers want it. The World Bank describes this as a double validation challenge: technical performance and product-market fit may need to be established together.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That can make the pre-revenue financing gap acute. Technical uncertainty, assets that are difficult to value before revenue, and a limited supply of specialist early-stage capital can all complicate fundraising. Generalist investors may also lack in-house technical expertise to assess the opportunity. The World Bank’s 2021 report, Financing Deep Tech, discusses these barriers.
Software is not necessarily capital-light
Software businesses may put more of their financing toward product development, hiring, customer acquisition, infrastructure, and expansion. OECD characterizes information and communications technology companies—particularly software—as easier or faster to commercialize, with relatively low demand uncertainty compared with deep-tech. That is a sector tendency, not a promise of rapid product-market fit or profitability, and it does not mean software companies always need little capital.

There is no universal dollar figure that captures the funding requirement for either category. A software company with expensive infrastructure or a regulated sales process can need substantial capital; a deep-tech venture may secure a commercial contract earlier than a typical development path would suggest.
How long does it take a deep-tech startup to raise its next round?
OECD’s 2026 financing report says deep-tech ventures take an average of 25–40% longer between funding stages than other tech firms, attributing the statistic to BCG (2023). The same report says deep-tech ventures face higher failure risks at each stage. This is the clearest quantitative comparison available here, but it measures the interval between funding stages—not the time from founding to revenue, the total time to commercialization, or the experience of a particular startup. Deep-tech development can also be less predictable because several technical components may need to work at the same time before a company can demonstrate a viable product or meaningful traction. The World Bank puts it plainly: “Development timelines for deep tech are less predictable than for other start-ups.”
The sources do not establish a fixed time-to-revenue benchmark for either category or a like-for-like failure-rate percentage. The stage-interval average should not be converted into months or years, or treated as a forecast for an individual company.

Why do deep-tech timelines and risks differ?
Technical proof and customer proof can overlap
A deep-tech team may need to validate performance while testing whether a market exists and finding a product-market fit. If multiple technical components must work together, an apparently promising milestone may not yet establish that the whole offering is reliable, manufacturable, or commercially useful. That uncertainty makes it harder to set milestones and can postpone revenue and customer-traction evidence.
Investors may have less familiar evidence to assess
For a company without a sales history, standard indicators such as revenue growth and customer acquisition cost may not yet be available. Intellectual property can also be difficult to value before revenue, while investors may need technical expertise to judge whether a milestone meaningfully reduces risk. The World Bank’s 2021 analysis explains why these conditions can limit access to specialist early-stage financing.

Software’s faster commercialization does not remove execution risk
Software may be easier or faster to bring to market, but a product still has to attract and retain customers, compete effectively, and support its costs. Its relative commercialization advantage does not establish that every software startup is low-risk, quick to profitability, or inexpensive to scale.

Financing instruments are not interchangeable. A founder should consider the venture’s stage, geography, eligibility, control implications, investor expertise, and the milestone the capital is meant to fund.
| Financing approach | How it can fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Venture capital | Can provide funding alongside investor expertise and networks; may suit ventures targeting substantial growth. | Investor fit, dilution, milestone expectations, and whether the investor can evaluate the technical or commercial case. |
| Grants and other public support | May support technology development or strategic-sector activity without being the same as conventional equity financing. | Eligibility, geography, application requirements, timing, and permitted uses vary. |
| Public participation or public-private co-investment | Governments use participation and targeted co-investment to mobilize patient capital in strategic sectors. | Availability and terms depend on the program and location; a policy example is not proof that a specific startup can access it. |
| Longer-horizon or evergreen capital | Can be more compatible with extended development and commercialization paths. | Confirm investment horizon, governance, and expectations for progress and returns. |
| Corporate partnerships | May bring access to industry knowledge, customers, or development resources. | Assess strategic alignment, rights, control, and whether the partnership advances the venture’s own milestones. |
| Hybrid capital, venture debt, or venture equity | The European Commission’s 2018 study recommends financing instruments better adapted to deep-tech risk, including these approaches. | Suitability depends on the company’s maturity, repayment capacity, terms, and local availability. |
The OECD’s 2026 incubation report notes that technological readiness, product-market fit, sales history, and management competencies inform investment readiness. For a founder, this means a funding plan should explain not just how much money is needed, but what evidence that money is expected to produce.
How should founders plan the next funding milestone?
- Define the next proof point. State whether the financing is intended to establish technical performance, product-market fit, sales traction, or a combination.
- Show what evidence will count. Deep-tech evidence may center on technical milestones and validation; commercial evidence may include contracts, revenue, or customer traction when those are attainable.
- Match the funding horizon to the work. Estimate the time required to reach the milestone and consider whether the proposed capital source can accommodate uncertainty and delays.
- Choose investors and instruments for fit. Weigh technical expertise, network value, eligibility, control, dilution, and repayment obligations rather than assuming one financing route suits every company.
- Explain the remaining risks. Identify what will still be unproven after the milestone so that the next financing need is not hidden or mistaken for a failure of execution.
A credible financing plan connects capital to evidence: what the company can demonstrate before the money runs out, and why that evidence should make the next step more investable.
