More intensive reasoning can use more compute per answer, and cheaper AI can encourage more people to use it. The net effect of DeepSeek on electricity demand remains unmeasured.
Does DeepSeek use less energy?
It can use less computing for some model operations, but “less energy” depends on what is being compared: training or inference, which task the model performs, and the hardware and data-center systems involved.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) describes DeepSeek-R1, released on 20 January 2025, as using a mixture-of-experts approach that reduces the active model size, multi-head latent attention, and multi-token prediction. The IEA says these techniques lower computational, financial, and energy costs for training and use. That is an account of the techniques and their expected effects—not an independently metered energy audit of every DeepSeek deployment. IEA, Energy and AI (2025).
Even a lower-energy result for a particular task would not, on its own, establish lower total electricity use. The overall picture depends on how many tasks people run, how demanding those tasks are, and what energy boundary is counted.

Why reasoning can use more energy per answer
DeepSeek-R1 is a reasoning model. The IEA says reasoning models such as R1 and OpenAI’s o1 spend more computation developing answers, a practice called inference-time scaling. This can help with reasoning or planning, but makes these models more energy-intensive than traditional language models—and extremely inefficient for simple knowledge retrieval or summarization, according to the IEA.
That distinction matters when choosing a model for a task. A model’s efficiency techniques do not mean every answer costs less energy: extended reasoning may require more computation than a straightforward lookup or summary.

Why lower costs might not lower total demand
Lower costs can make AI more accessible and encourage greater use. If each task requires less energy but the lower cost leads to many more tasks, total energy use could rise rather than fall. Open models may also shift workloads from centralized cloud data centers to distributed edge devices. That changes where electricity is consumed; it does not necessarily eliminate the demand.
The IEA identifies efficiency improvement, surging uptake, and changing model capabilities as uncertain drivers of future AI energy demand. Its institutional report puts the broader context plainly: “There is no AI without energy – specifically electricity for data centres.” IEA, Energy and AI (published 10 April 2025).

What data-center electricity forecasts say—and don’t say
The IEA estimated that global data centers consumed 415 TWh of electricity in 2024. Its 2025 Base Case projected around 945 TWh in 2030. These are sector-wide estimates and projections, not measurements of DeepSeek’s electricity use or its effect on the total.
In that Base Case, accelerated-server electricity use was projected to grow 30% per year, with accelerated servers accounting for almost half of net data-center electricity growth from 2024 to 2030. The IEA also projected data centers would account for less than 10% of total global electricity-demand growth over that period; industry output, electrification, electric vehicles, and air conditioning were among the larger drivers. The IEA notes that data centers are concentrated in particular locations, which can make grid integration challenging even when their share of global electricity demand is limited. A later IEA executive summary reported that data-center electricity demand grew 17% in 2025, while electricity use at AI-focused data centers rose 50%. Those are aggregate figures; they do not isolate DeepSeek’s contribution or show that it caused the growth. IEA, Energy and AI, executive summary (2026).

The “up to 95% less” scenario
S&P Global Market Intelligence / 451 Research estimated that data centers planned to add 15–18 GW of capacity annually worldwide from 2025 to 2029, with 30–40% expected to house GPUs for AI workloads. Its analysis said AI’s net energy demand could fall by as much as 95% if comparable performance could be achieved with 10% of the GPU count, using GPUs with lower energy demand than those used by OpenAI.

This is a conditional analyst scenario, not a measured result of DeepSeek reducing global consumption. The same analysis warns that lower inference costs could accelerate adoption, and that moving workloads to distributed edge locations could change where power is used. It also notes that data-center construction serves non-AI workloads as well as AI. S&P Global Market Intelligence / 451 Research analysis.
The per-prompt estimate
A 2025 arXiv preprint by Nidhal Jegham, Marwen Abdelatti, Lassad Elmoubarki, and Abdeltawab Hendawi estimates that DeepSeek-R1 and o3 consume more than 33 Wh per long prompt under its infrastructure-aware benchmarking framework. This is a study-specific estimate—not an official DeepSeek disclosure or a universal energy figure for a query. The paper highlights the influence of infrastructure and measurement methods, so the number should not be treated as a direct comparison unless prompt length, hardware, workload, and system boundaries match. Jegham et al., arXiv preprint (2025).
Why the net effect is still unknown
Comparing model-level efficiency with national or global electricity demand requires more than knowing that an architecture uses less compute for a particular operation. The comparison must account for the task, how often it is run, whether the measure covers accelerator electricity or the full data center, and whether workloads move between locations or devices.
The IEA says limited transparency about the size and implementation of commercial models makes it difficult to measure their compute requirements and resulting energy demand. No cited source quantifies DeepSeek’s causal contribution to global or national electricity use. The evidence therefore supports a qualified conclusion: DeepSeek may improve efficiency for some AI work, while reasoning costs and increased use could offset those gains at larger scale.
