There is no evidence here to name DeepSeek the best open-weight model overall. Developers should compare the exact checkpoint and its license, performance on their own tasks, deployment requirements, serving support, total cost, and data-governance needs. “Open-weight” means the weights are available; it does not guarantee identical licensing, open training data, or inexpensive self-hosting.
What does “open-weight” mean when comparing DeepSeek?
Open-weight describes access to model weights, not a complete package of legal, technical, or operational guarantees. A developer still needs to identify the exact artifact being considered and check its license and associated terms. Training data may not be fully disclosed, and access to weights does not make the infrastructure needed to serve a model free.
DeepSeek announced R1 on January 20, 2025, saying its code and models were released under MIT terms and encouraging distillation and commercial use. That announcement is useful context, but it is not a substitute for checking the license file and upstream terms for the particular checkpoint you plan to deploy.
Which DeepSeek checkpoint are you actually evaluating?
“DeepSeek” can refer to different model families, sizes, and derived checkpoints. The R1 repository describes the full R1 model as a mixture-of-experts (MoE) model with 671 billion total parameters and 37 billion activated parameters, and lists a 128K context length. It also offers distilled Qwen- and Llama-based checkpoints ranging from 1.5B to 70B parameters. These are different deployment choices, not interchangeable versions of one model.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The distilled models also carry upstream context. DeepSeek’s repository says the Qwen-derived checkpoints originate from Qwen2.5, while the Llama-derived checkpoints originate from Llama 3.1 or 3.3. Check the license and terms for the exact artifact—including relevant upstream terms—rather than assuming that every distilled checkpoint has the same terms as the R1 release announcement.
What should you compare across candidates?
| Comparison area | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Checkpoint and license | Exact model identifier, version, license file, and any upstream terms. | A family name or release headline may not establish the terms for a derived checkpoint. |
| Task quality and reliability | Performance on representative prompts and tasks, including failure cases and output consistency. | A model that scores well on a public benchmark may still be a poor fit for your workload. |
| Serving requirements | Context length, quantization options, latency, throughput, memory and hardware needs under your workload. | Parameter count alone does not tell you whether a model meets your operational targets. |
| Serving ecosystem | Framework compatibility, API shape, tool use, and support for structured outputs you require. | Integration effort and available features can affect whether a model is practical to ship. |
| Total cost | Hosted API charges, or self-hosted compute plus setup, maintenance, monitoring, and operations. | Weights may be downloadable without self-hosting being cheaper or simpler. |
| Privacy and governance | Data handling, access controls, retention, deployment location, and your organization’s requirements. | Do not infer a provider’s data practices from a model being open-weight. |
How should you test quality instead of relying on leaderboard claims?
Use vendor-reported benchmark results to identify tasks worth testing, not as a universal ranking. DeepSeek’s R1 repository reports evaluations on benchmarks including MMLU, GPQA-Diamond, LiveCodeBench, and AIME 2024. Results depend on the benchmark, prompt, sampling method, model version, and evaluation setup; the repository also describes its evaluation settings. A score is meaningful only alongside its metric and comparator version.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Choose a small evaluation set that reflects your real use: for example, your coding tasks, domain questions, or structured-output requests.
- Record the exact checkpoint, prompt, sampling settings, context length, and serving configuration for every run.
- Compare candidates on the same tasks and conditions, and include reliability checks such as malformed outputs, missed constraints, and repeat-run variation.
- Measure latency and throughput with the context sizes and concurrency your application expects, rather than treating a benchmark score as a deployment result.
Without primary documentation for the competing checkpoints and a neutral, matched evaluation, a cross-vendor winner cannot be established from DeepSeek’s own results alone.
Can you run DeepSeek locally, and what does the example prove?
DeepSeek’s R1 repository provides local-serving guidance for distilled models as well as an OpenAI-compatible API route. One documented vLLM example for DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-32B sets tensor parallelism to two and the maximum model length to 32,768 tokens. It is an example configuration, not a universal hardware requirement, nor evidence that a particular setup will meet a given latency target.

For local evaluation, choose a checkpoint that fits the available serving setup, then validate memory use and performance at your intended context length and concurrency. For a hosted route, confirm the current model identifier, API behavior, availability, and pricing directly with the provider before building around them.
How do you compare API cost with self-hosting?
Compare the cost of the same workload, not a headline price against a hypothetical free local deployment. For an API, account for input and output volume, caching rules, and the provider’s current rates. For self-hosting, include compute, capacity for peak demand, utilization, deployment work, and ongoing operations. The choice can also depend on governance requirements and the value of avoiding infrastructure management.

DeepSeek’s R1 launch announcement listed API rates of $0.14 per million cached input tokens, $0.55 per million uncached input tokens, and $2.19 per million output tokens in January 2025. Those are launch-era figures, not current prices. A current official API documentation search listing identified V4.1-Flash and V4-Pro-0813, but current rates were not established here; verify live model names, pricing, caching rules, and availability before estimating costs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you make the final choice?
Start with hard constraints—license, governance, and whether the model can be served in your environment—then compare task quality and operational cost among the candidates that remain. Keep a record of the exact checkpoint and test conditions so that a model update or change in serving setup does not silently invalidate the comparison.
