DeepSeek is an AI chat assistant you can use on its official website or through its official iOS and Android apps. Start by opening DeepSeek’s official download page, then choose the web experience or an app-store link from that page. Before using it, note that DeepSeek’s privacy policy says it may collect prompts, uploaded files, photos, and chat history.

What DeepSeek is—and what “free” means

DeepSeek is an AI chat assistant in the same broad category as ChatGPT: you can ask questions and give it tasks in a conversation. That description does not establish that the two services perform equally well, cost the same, or are interchangeable for every use.

DeepSeek’s official download page presents its assistant as free. Its January 15, 2025 app announcement also described the app as free, without ads or in-app purchases at that time. That dated statement is not a guarantee of current terms; check the current app listing and service before relying on it.

How to start using DeepSeek

  1. Choose an official access route. Open DeepSeek’s download page for the web chat and links to the iOS and Android apps. Use the app-store links reached from DeepSeek rather than an unverified third-party listing.
  2. Open the chat and sign in if prompted. DeepSeek’s January 2025 announcement listed email, Google, and Apple sign-in, but the available information does not establish today’s exact sign-up screens or whether sign-in is required for every route. Follow the current interface.
  3. Enter a clear request. Ask a question or describe the task in the conversation. For a more useful response, include relevant context, the result you want, and any constraints—for example, “Summarize this passage in five bullet points for a beginner.”
  4. Review the response. Check important facts and calculations before relying on them, especially for consequential decisions. Treat the chat as assistance, not a substitute for verifying information that matters.

Features listed for the mobile app

In its January 15, 2025 announcement, DeepSeek listed synchronized chat history, web search, Deep-Think mode, file upload, and text extraction. The announcement is dated, so feature availability and labels may have changed. The sources do not establish that each feature appears on every platform or in every region; check the current app or web interface.

Protect sensitive information

DeepSeek’s privacy policy, last updated February 10, 2026, identifies Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd., with a registered address in China, as the service controller. It says the service may collect account details and user inputs, including text or voice prompts, uploaded files, photos, feedback, and chat history.

As a practical precaution, do not enter passwords, personal identifiers, confidential work material, or other sensitive information unless you have reviewed the applicable policy and, for work data, your organization’s rules. This is a caution based on the policy’s collection disclosures—not evidence of a particular breach or misuse. The policy also says its scope does not cover personal-data processing by downstream applications built by developers using the open platform; those developers should provide their own policies.

Using DeepSeek as a developer

API access is a separate developer route; it is not needed for ordinary chat. DeepSeek’s API documentation says developers need an API key and describes an OpenAI- and Anthropic-compatible interface. Its current documentation lists https://api.deepseek.com as the OpenAI-compatible base URL and uses deepseek-flash and deepseek-v4-pro in its first-call guidance.

Model names and billing can change, so check the live API documentation before adapting code or estimating costs. DeepSeek’s change log says V4-Pro and V4-Flash became available through the API on April 24, 2026, and that the legacy names deepseek-chat and deepseek-reasoner were scheduled for discontinuation on July 24, 2026. That retirement date has passed; older tutorials may therefore use names that are no longer current.
