Not for a production computer or sensitive work. Deepin’s own release notes warn that Deepin 25 Alpha has unresolved issues and is “not recommended for production environments.” Separate SUSE Security Team reviews have raised substantial concerns about security flaws and packaging practices in Deepin desktop components—but those reviews were not a complete audit of the Deepin 25 Alpha operating system and do not establish that it contains spyware or deliberately surveils users.

What the Alpha warning means in practice

Alpha software is still under development. In this case, Deepin’s release notes specifically flag unresolved problems involving booting, upgrades, installation, and applications. That is enough to make the Alpha a poor choice for a computer you rely on, even before considering the separate security concerns.

“Not recommended for production environments” is the project’s own warning, not an independent test result. Treat this build as an evaluation copy: use a virtual machine or a non-critical spare machine, keep backups, and avoid signing in to sensitive accounts or storing important data on it. Verify the download and any available signature through official Deepin channels before installing. These precautions reduce the consequences of problems; they do not certify the image as safe.

What Linyaps does—and what it does not prove

Linyaps is Deepin’s package-management and application-runtime approach. Deepin describes it as providing an application runtime decoupled from the host operating system, using Linux User Namespace and CGroup mechanisms. Those are isolation-related design mechanisms, but their presence alone does not prove that every application is safe, that isolation cannot be escaped, or that the whole operating system has passed an independent security audit.

The Alpha release notes said that more than 3,000 applications had been adapted as of the end of 2024. Deepin’s later Deepin 25 release notes claimed more than 5,000 software packages across architectures. These are project-published availability figures from different dates and descriptions, not independent measures of application quality or security, and the later count should not be read as the exact catalog in the Alpha build.

Deepin’s Alpha notes described support for Deepin, UOS, openEuler, and Ubuntu, as well as AMD64, ARM64, and LoongArch. They also described conversion paths for deb, AppImage, and Flatpak packages. Later Deepin 25 notes listed Debian, Ubuntu, Arch, Fedora, and openEuler among supported systems. These are the project’s compatibility claims; they do not establish that every listed system or package works with this particular Alpha image.

What SUSE’s security review found—and its limits

Matthias Gerstner of the SUSE Security Team published an account of SUSE’s security and packaging reviews of Deepin desktop components. The account describes a review history dating to 2017 and findings in components including deepin-api, the file manager service, deepin-app-services, and deepin-api-proxy, including flaws and fixes SUSE considered incomplete.

SUSE also reported that a community packager used deepin-feature-enable to bypass openSUSE review restrictions for certain D-Bus and Polkit configuration. SUSE said it would remove Deepin desktop packages from Tumbleweed and future Leap 16.0, and remove the bypass package from Leap 15.6. The report says upstream responded after publication and outlined an intention to address reported issues.

This is meaningful evidence of security-engineering and governance problems in the components SUSE reviewed. It is not a complete independent audit of Deepin 25 Alpha: SUSE said it had reviewed only a fraction of Deepin’s code. The packaging-policy bypass described by SUSE concerned openSUSE’s packaging process; the report does not establish that Deepin’s own distribution used the same bypass.

Do these findings mean Deepin is spyware?

No such conclusion is established by the evidence described here. The documented concerns involve security flaws, fixes SUSE considered incomplete, and an openSUSE packaging-policy violation. They do not demonstrate deliberate surveillance, and they are not a comprehensive privacy audit of Deepin 25 Alpha.

That distinction is important: “not proven to be spyware” is not the same as “proven private.” The reviewed material does not comprehensively test Deepin 25 Alpha’s privacy defaults or network behavior. If those are deciding factors for you, do not infer them from Linyaps’ isolation design or from the absence of a spyware finding; seek evidence about the exact version and configuration you plan to use.

Why the installed version and update state matter

A later Deepin 25.1 announcement, dated April 23, 2026, addressed PackageKit CVE-2026-41651. Deepin described it as a time-of-check-to-time-of-use vulnerability that could allow unauthorized package installation or removal, with possible privilege escalation. The advisory identifies PackageKit version 1.2.8-2deepin1 and lower as vulnerable, and 1.2.8-2deepin2 as fixed.

PackageKit version in Deepin’s advisory Deepin’s stated status
1.2.8-2deepin1 or lower Vulnerable to CVE-2026-41651, according to Deepin’s April 23, 2026 advisory.
1.2.8-2deepin2 Identified by Deepin as the fixed version.

This later incident does not establish whether a particular Alpha image includes the vulnerable package or whether it has since been updated. Check the PackageKit version and update status on the machine itself; do not assume an image is fixed simply because a later release received a patch.

How to evaluate Deepin 25 Alpha more safely

  1. Choose an isolated test environment. Prefer a virtual machine. If you install on hardware, use a spare machine that does not hold essential files or provide access to sensitive accounts.
  2. Verify the installer. Obtain it through official Deepin channels and verify its signature or checksum when Deepin provides one. Do not treat a download as verified if you have not checked it.
  3. Keep recoverable copies of important data. Back up files before experimenting, and confirm you can restore them independently of the test system.
  4. Install updates and inspect versions. Check the machine’s actual update state and package versions, especially when applying later security advisories. The Alpha label alone does not tell you whether a specific fix is present.
  5. Assess the exact system you intend to use. Consider its update channel, package origins and signatures, build provenance, recovery options, and hardware compatibility. The reviewed evidence does not answer every question about privacy or network behavior, so do not treat those areas as verified.

Who should—and should not—use it

  • Reasonable fit: a Linux enthusiast who wants to explore Deepin’s interface and Linyaps in a disposable virtual machine or on non-critical hardware, and can tolerate installation or application issues.
  • Poor fit: a work computer, a primary daily-use system, a device containing sensitive data, or any machine where downtime or data loss would be costly.
  • For a production decision: evaluate a maintained release and its current updates rather than relying on an Alpha image. Then judge the exact version, configuration, update channel, and security requirements—not the distribution name alone.
