DeepFaceLive is an open-source Windows program documented for replacing a person’s face in webcam or video input in real time, including use in livestreams and video calls. Its project repository has been archived since November 13, 2024, so its documentation describes the software but does not establish that it is actively maintained or currently compatible with your PC.
What is DeepFaceLive?
DeepFaceLive is a PC face-swapping application documented by its project as a way to process webcam or video input and replace a face with a model-based face. The archived project also describes a separate Face Animator module. That is the basis for the headline’s “someone else” effect: the output can present a different face while the source video is being processed.
The project documentation links setup guidance for streaming and video calls. It does not establish that every streaming or calling application works with every configuration, and no current compatibility testing is documented here. The project’s own archived GitHub repository is the primary source for its feature descriptions and setup materials.
What hardware did the project say it needed?
The archived README says real-time streaming with Face Animator requires a GPU rated at 35 TFLOPS. It recommends an RTX 2070 or better, or a Radeon RX 5700 XT or better. These are the project’s documented requirements and recommendations, not independent performance tests or current buying advice. They do not guarantee that a particular setup will run well today.
#1 Best Overall
- Capture the moment: With sharp, vibrant 1080p resolution, every video call looks more natural, with better brightness, richer colors, and smoother motion. Whether you’re leading a meeting or catching up with family, they’ll see you exactly as they should.
- Be heard, loud, and clear: No more muffled audio or repeating yourself. With dual built-in microphones, your voice comes through clear, natural, and balanced—so whether you’re speaking softly or laughing out loud, you sound just right.
- Total privacy, in a snap: When you’re not on a call, just slide the built-in privacy shutter closed, and rest easy knowing your camera is completely off.
- Tilt Degree: -20°~10°; Monitor Thickness: 4 mm ~ 40 mm; Maximum Resolution: 1080P; Frame Rate: 30 fps; FOV: 85°
- Connection: USB-A 2.0; Cable Length: 1.8m Integrated Cable; Power Consumption: 5V/1A
Because the repository is archived, treat its operating-system and setup instructions as historical documentation. The available sources do not establish current compatibility, installation success, or support for newer hardware and software.
What risks come with real-time face swapping?
Real-time face replacement can be used for ordinary creative content, but it can also make a person appear to be speaking or acting as someone else without that person’s consent. In a September 2021 report, Futurism quoted Henry Adjer, then head of communications and research analysis at Deeptrace, warning: “This could range from adult streamers ‘wearing’ celebrities’ faces without consent, to biometric spoofing such as fooling facial recognition and liveness detection systems.” This was an assessment of possible misuse, not evidence that every scenario occurred.

The report also quoted Russian YouTuber Vladislav Pedro, attributing the comment to The Daily Dot: “This software can be used by both streamers and creators of any other media content.” That describes possible uses; it does not establish that a particular use is authorized or harmless. Futurism’s report was updated September 12, 2021.
AIAAIC’s DeepFaceLive entry catalogs concerns including fraud, privacy violations, misinformation, and non-consensual explicit content. A risk catalog identifies areas of concern; it should not be read as proof that DeepFaceLive caused each kind of incident. The entry says it was last updated in December 2024. AIAAIC’s entry also identifies DeepFaceLive as released in August 2021.

Is DeepFaceLive still maintained?
No: the project owner archived the GitHub repository on November 13, 2024, making it read-only. That status means the repository is not accepting ordinary updates there; it does not by itself prove the software cannot run. The sources do not establish a successor project or verify current support. Check the archived documentation carefully before relying on it for a present-day production setup.
Sitra’s Heikot signaalit 2022 also includes a brief description of DeepFaceLive and cites the 2021 Futurism report. It offers historical context rather than a current compatibility assessment.
