Choose DECT if you need to roam farther from a fixed desk phone or computer; choose Bluetooth if one headset needs to move conveniently between a computer and mobile devices. Neither connection type guarantees reliable service in every office. Actual range and call behavior depend on the headset model, its base or adapter, the devices it connects to, the building, and nearby wireless activity.
DECT vs. Bluetooth headsets: What is the practical difference?
DECT headsets typically connect through a dedicated base or USB adapter and are designed for cordless calling around a desk or office. Bluetooth headsets connect to a Bluetooth radio in a computer, phone, or dongle, making them a natural fit for users who switch among devices.
That distinction is a starting point, not a guarantee. Some products bridge desk and computer workflows, and each product’s connection options and supported call controls vary. Compare the exact headset and configuration rather than relying on the protocol name alone. Jabra’s February 20, 2015 comparison also frames the decision around how the headset will be used.
| Consideration | DECT | Bluetooth |
|---|---|---|
| Typical fit | Roaming during calls with a desk phone or computer | Moving a headset among a computer and mobile devices |
| Connection path | Often a paired base or dedicated USB adapter; confirm the model’s actual setup | Direct host Bluetooth or a USB Bluetooth dongle, depending on device and configuration |
| Range | Some office models advertise long maximum ranges; walls and wireless density reduce practical reach | Depends on the headset and host radios, any dongle, and the environment |
| Compatibility checks | Base or adapter, desk-phone interface, operating system, and calling-platform support | Host Bluetooth support or dongle, operating system, calling-platform support, and call-control behavior |
Which wireless headset has the best range?
There is no protocol-wide winner based on a single guaranteed distance. The listed figures below are manufacturer specifications, not independent indoor measurements or promises about a particular office. Line of sight and environmental conditions matter.
#1 Best Overall

| Product example | Manufacturer-stated range | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Jabra Engage 55 SE | Up to 150 m from its computer adapter | Manufacturer maximum; building conditions and wireless density can affect reach. Jabra product specifications |
| HP Poly Savi 7300 | Up to 180 m line of sight | Manufacturer maximum; its universal base connects to a desk phone and PC. HP Poly product specifications |
| Jabra Link 400 | Up to 150 m line of sight | Jabra says walls and the number of wireless headsets in a limited area can affect range. Jabra Link 400 specifications |
Bluetooth is not synonymous with one short range. Jabra’s 2015 overview describes older general class guidance: around 100 m for Class 1 and around 10 m for Class 2. Those figures should not be treated as guaranteed distances for a modern headset paired with a particular computer or phone. The headset radio, host radio, dongle, and surroundings all matter.
For a real office, map the path you need to walk rather than shopping by maximum range alone. Walls, floors, furniture, radio congestion, and the number of active headsets can all make usable reach lower than a published line-of-sight figure.

Are DECT and Bluetooth headsets reliable in a busy office?
Reliability depends on deployment. DECT’s purpose and band can suit longer-range office calling, but dense deployments still need sensible base placement and coverage planning. Bluetooth performance can be affected by the computer’s radio, firmware, other devices sharing that radio, and a crowded wireless environment.
Microsoft’s Teams guidance notes that some users may need a USB dongle for a certified Bluetooth headset in dense radio environments, when multiple devices use the PC’s Bluetooth radio, or when the PC radio performs poorly. A headset that works well in one office may not behave the same way in another.

For privacy-sensitive work, check security features and certifications for the exact product. HP describes the Savi 7300 as using DECT Security Step C design and 256-bit AES encryption; Jabra describes the Link 400 as DECT Security certified with additional encryption features. These product-specific claims do not establish a general security ranking of DECT over Bluetooth.
Will a DECT headset work with my computer or desk phone?
Sometimes, but compatibility is specific to the headset, its base or adapter, and the phone or computer. Before buying, check the product’s precise SKU and regional variant, the connection hardware included or required, the desk-phone interface, the operating system, and certification for your calling platform. Also confirm whether call answering, mute, and other controls work as expected with your setup.

For example, HP Poly describes the Savi 7300 universal base as connecting to both a desk phone and PC, and offers a Teams-specific version. Jabra Engage 55 SE is a DECT example for computer calling through its computer adapter. The Jabra Link 400 is not a universal DECT adapter: it is included with Engage 55 and can upgrade compatible Engage 65/75 headsets after a firmware update. Check Jabra’s Link 400 details for the supported configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will a Bluetooth headset work with Microsoft Teams?
Check the model and connection method rather than assuming any Bluetooth headset will provide the same Teams experience. Microsoft’s Teams device guidance, updated in September 2026, says most Bluetooth headsets and speakerphones certified for Teams are designed for PC or Mac use with a USB dongle. Native Bluetooth operation is supported on Windows for certified devices, but host radio performance and local wireless conditions can still make the dongle preferable.
Microsoft maintains a certification roster in that guidance. Certification for Teams does not establish support for every other softphone, operating system, or desk-phone arrangement; check the relevant platform’s compatibility information for your setup.
Quick Recap
How to choose for your office
- List the devices you use. Note whether calls come from a desk phone, computer, smartphone, or more than one of these.
- Measure the roaming need. Identify the actual route from your desk and the obstacles between you and the headset base or host.
- Check the exact connection path. Confirm whether the model connects directly, requires a Bluetooth dongle, or needs a DECT base or adapter.
- Verify calling controls and support. Check the exact SKU against your operating system, phone interface, and UC platform certification.
- Account for the environment. Consider walls, nearby wireless devices, and how many headsets will operate in the same area; a maximum range is not an indoor guarantee.
- Compare model-specific security information if needed. Look for the manufacturer’s stated features and certifications rather than inferring security from the radio standard.
Choose DECT when
- You spend calls moving away from a fixed desk phone or computer.
- You want a dedicated base or adapter for an office calling setup.
- The exact model supports your desk-phone or computer connection and required call controls.
Choose Bluetooth when
- You want to switch a headset between a computer and mobile devices.
- Your computer’s Bluetooth setup or the headset’s USB dongle is supported by your calling platform.
- The practical range is sufficient for your office layout and roaming route.
