Choose Debian Stable when your server’s software works with its well-tested package versions and Debian’s support model fits your team. Choose Ubuntu LTS when you want Canonical’s documented default security-update workflow, five years of standard security maintenance for Main/Restricted packages, or an Ubuntu Pro option for broader or longer coverage. Neither is inherently more secure or maintenance-free: the practical choice depends on the packages you run, update and reboot procedures, compatibility, and how you handle release upgrades.

What “secure” and “low-maintenance” mean for a server

A support term alone does not tell you whether a server is secure. Coverage differs by package, repository component, architecture, release, and—in Ubuntu’s case—subscription tier. Nor does a longer support window install patches, reboot the machine, test applications, or recover a failed service for you.

For a low-maintenance deployment, look at the whole operating routine: whether critical packages receive security fixes, how updates are applied, who checks service health, and how often the server must move to a new release. A distribution is a good fit when that routine is both adequate for the workload and realistic for the people operating it.

How Debian Stable and Ubuntu LTS support differ

Question Debian Stable Ubuntu LTS
Standard support model Debian targets at least five years of support for a Stable release, combining regular support and a later LTS period. A separate Debian LTS team takes over security maintenance after the Debian Security Team’s work ends. Coverage is not universal: verify each package, release, and architecture. Ubuntu documents five years of standard security maintenance for packages in Main and Restricted. Universe and Multiverse receive community support during that period unless applicable Ubuntu Pro ESM coverage is enabled.
Extended coverage Commercial Debian Extended LTS is an option for some deployments that need support beyond the project’s LTS period; terms and package coverage depend on the service. Ubuntu Pro provides ESM coverage, with an optional Legacy add-on that can bring LTS security coverage to 15 years. That is an extended option, not the baseline free standard-support window. Canonical documents free personal-use Ubuntu Pro subscriptions for up to five machines; confirm current eligibility and included services.
Automatic security updates The cited Debian sources do not establish a default automatic-update workflow equivalent to Ubuntu’s documented Ubuntu Server default. Ubuntu says unattended-upgrades is included in default Ubuntu Server installations from 18.04 LTS and supports automatic security updates. The defaults are configurable, and third-party repositories need separate configuration.
Package approach Stable favors older, well-tested package versions, which can reduce unexpected change when the application works with them. Check the target LTS release and repositories for the versions and support coverage your workload requires; the cited policy sources do not provide a head-to-head package-age comparison.

These figures describe project and vendor policies, not comparative measurements of vulnerability rates, uptime, or administrator hours. For the detailed policies, see Debian’s Long Term Support information and Ubuntu security-update documentation.

Which distribution fits your server?

Debian Stable is a strong fit when predictability matters most

Debian’s FAQ recommends Stable for servers, especially those with strong stability requirements or exposed to the internet. Its stable packages are older than those in Debian Unstable, but the project describes them as well tested and less likely to have bugs. That can be an advantage when your application is compatible with the supplied versions and you want to limit routine software change.

Debian 13 “Trixie” was identified as current Stable in Debian’s notice dated 12 July 2026. In that same notice, Debian 12 “Bookworm” moved from regular support to LTS, scheduled through 30 June 2028. The notice describes Bookworm’s lifecycle as three years of regular support plus two years of LTS. Check the support status of your exact release and installed packages rather than applying the lifecycle of one release to another.

Debian’s LTS coverage has package and architecture exclusions, and supported architectures can differ between regular support and LTS. Before relying on it for a production server, check the specific package, architecture, and release in Debian’s Bookworm support handover notice and LTS information.

Ubuntu LTS is a strong fit when its update workflow or coverage options suit your team

Ubuntu Server installations from 18.04 LTS include unattended-upgrades by default, according to Canonical’s documentation. This provides a documented starting point for automatic security updates, but it does not remove the need to decide how to handle reboots, application checks, monitoring, and recovery. Updates from third-party repositories require separate configuration.

Ubuntu’s standard five-year security-maintenance window applies to Main and Restricted packages. If a required package is in Universe or Multiverse, determine whether community maintenance is sufficient or whether applicable Ubuntu Pro ESM coverage is needed. Ubuntu Pro’s optional Legacy add-on can extend LTS security coverage to 15 years; check the applicable tier, repository, release dates, and current terms before relying on that horizon. Canonical describes personal-use Pro as free for up to five machines, subject to current eligibility and service terms. Details are in the security-update documentation and Ubuntu release-cycle information.

Use this checklist before choosing

  1. Inventory critical software. List the packages your service depends on, including libraries, database and web-server components, drivers, and packages from outside the distribution’s repositories.
  2. Confirm coverage package by package. For each item, record its repository component, release, architecture, and actual support end date. Debian LTS exclusions and Ubuntu’s component- and tier-dependent coverage can change the answer.
  3. Test the intended release on the real workload. Check application compatibility, required kernel and library versions, storage and network devices, and hardware drivers. Debian warns that cutting-edge hardware might not work with Stable.
  4. Write down the update and recovery routine. Assign responsibility for reviewing advisories, applying and validating updates, scheduling reboots, monitoring services, maintaining backups, and recovering from a bad change. Include third-party repositories in the plan.
  5. Set a release-upgrade schedule. Decide how long the server will stay on a release and who will test and carry out the eventual upgrade. A security-maintenance period is not a substitute for a tested migration plan.
  6. Match support ownership to your capacity. Decide whether the project’s support path is sufficient or whether paid extended security coverage or support is needed. Verify what that service covers for the particular packages and release.

Practical verdict

For a server whose application works well with conservative package versions, Debian Stable is a sensible choice; Debian explicitly recommends Stable for servers where stability is important. Ubuntu LTS is a sensible choice when its documented unattended security-update mechanism, standard Main/Restricted coverage, or Ubuntu Pro options better fit your operating model. Make the final decision from the support status of the packages you actually deploy and the maintenance process your team can reliably run—not from the LTS label or support duration alone.
