Deadlock reached a reported peak of 228,086 concurrent Steam players on September 30, 2026, according to Beebom citing SteamDB. Valve, however, still describes the game as unfinished and in early development. The player record is not a release announcement: Valve gave no launch date in its September 29 post.

How many people are playing Deadlock?

Beebom reported that Deadlock reached 228,086 concurrent Steam players on September 30, 2026, citing SteamDB. That is a reported peak of people playing at the same time on Steam—not a total of everyone who has played the game, and not a player-count figure published by Valve. Beebom’s report provides the figure; player counts can change over time.

Why does Valve say Deadlock is unfinished?

Valve’s Steam page describes Deadlock as a multiplayer game in early development. In a September 29, 2026 post, Valve said early access gives players a chance to help the team shape the game and identify what is fun. The post also said the team wants to work on the core game before moving on to later polish, pointing to older hero artwork as an example of work that can come later.

Valve framed player involvement as a way to reduce the risk of building a multiplayer game. In its words, “the best way to minimize that risk [is] to make sure that we are able to have it in players’ hands from an early state to help us shape it and tell us what is fun and what isn’t.” Valve’s development post was published under the Deadlock account, not attributed to a named individual.

What did the City Never Sleeps update add?

Valve’s September 29 post described the City Never Sleeps update as bringing a substantial visual update to the map and neutral units, six heroes, HUD changes, quality-of-life updates, and accessibility options. The post also said work was proceeding on progression and hero and hideout customizations, which Valve wants to adjust using player feedback.

What features are confirmed, and what remains tentative?

The update features Valve listed are additions already included in City Never Sleeps. Other work in the post was described with more caution:

  • Progression and customization: Valve said it is working on progression and hero and hideout customization, with feedback informing adjustments before full release.
  • Older hero remodels: Valve said remodels would likely happen gradually in upcoming updates alongside other work; it did not present them as a fixed schedule.
  • Major item changes and alternate modes: Valve called these ideas speculative and said whether they ship depends on playtesting.

These distinctions matter: Valve’s post describes ongoing development and possibilities, not a guaranteed feature roadmap.

When will Deadlock be released?

Valve did not announce a public release date or schedule in the September 29 post. A new reported Steam concurrency peak shows strong activity, but it does not establish that a public launch is imminent. For current development statements, consult Valve’s official post.
