If Norton says DDSHelper.exe is trying to access saved usernames and passwords in Chrome, the alert describes attempted access to browser data; it does not, by itself, prove that usable passwords were read. A Malwarebytes staff member says Malwarebytes scans browser data and configuration files to detect malware and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), and that passwords stored in the files are encrypted during analysis. That explanation does not authenticate a particular DDSHelper.exe file on your computer.
Why would DDSHelper.exe access browser data?
In a Malwarebytes forum thread dated April 16, 2026, a staff member explained that Malwarebytes scans browser data and configuration files while looking for infections and PUPs. Those files can include information about installed browser add-ons and extensions, as well as saved-password data.
The staff member said, “Some of these configuration files store your passwords but the passwords are encrypted,” and added that Malwarebytes cannot see actual passwords or login credentials when it analyzes those files. This is the vendor staff member’s explanation of the alert, not an independent examination of your computer or a guarantee about every file named DDSHelper.exe. Read the Malwarebytes forum discussion.
Does the alert mean your passwords were stolen?
No—not on its own. An alert that a program attempted to access a browser file is not proof that a person or program obtained usable passwords. The Malwarebytes staff explanation is that password data in the files it analyzes is encrypted and that the software cannot see the actual credentials. The forum thread does not independently verify what happened on any particular computer, so treat the alert as a reason to check the file and the security event rather than as proof of either theft or safety.

How can you check the alert?
Confirm which file triggered it
Check the alert details for the file path and the event information available in Norton. The cited discussions do not provide a reliable checklist of file paths, digital signatures, or hashes that can authenticate an individual DDSHelper.exe. If you cannot confirm that the file belongs to your installed Malwarebytes product, ask Malwarebytes support to verify it; do not assume a file is legitimate just because it has that name.
Review Norton’s event details before changing protection
A participant in a Norton Community discussion suggested checking Norton Security History and reviewing the event for available actions. That is community advice, not verified current Norton guidance. The page also warns that AI-sourced content may be inaccurate. Consult current Norton support instructions before restoring a file, creating an exclusion, or otherwise changing protection settings. See the Norton Community discussion.

Could blocking DDSHelper.exe cause login problems?
A Norton Community user reported login problems after blocking the file, but the discussion does not establish that blocking DDSHelper.exe caused them. The events were reported in sequence; that alone does not identify the cause. The community thread offers no diagnosis that would justify treating the block as the explanation for account access problems.
