JEDEC finalized the DDR5 SDRAM standard in July 2020. It included a DDR5-6400 data-rate bin, while release coverage described a single fully populated LRDIMM eventually reaching 2TB. Those are different claims: 6400 MT/s is a standardized transfer rate, and 2TB was a future capacity possibility—not a promise that 2TB modules were available or would work in any given system.

What did the DDR5 specification finalize?

JEDEC’s JESD79-5, published in July 2020, defines the DDR5 SDRAM device specification. Its scope includes device features and functionality, electrical characteristics, packaging, and signal assignments. It covers compliant 8Gb through 32Gb devices in x4, x8, and x16 organizations.

The specification established the technical framework for DDR5 devices; it did not mean every module type, speed, or capacity would be supported by every computer. The actual memory configuration depends on the processor’s memory controller, motherboard or system design, module type, and how the memory is populated.

What does DDR5-6400 mean?

DDR5-6400 refers to a data-transfer rate of 6400 megatransfers per second (MT/s), not a memory clock running at 6400 MHz. AnandTech’s contemporaneous report described the top rate as 6.4 Gbps per pin; MT/s is the clearest convention for stating the module’s transfer rate.

DDR5-6400 is a rate included in the standard, not a guarantee that a particular module or platform will operate at that rate. JEDEC’s DDR5 RDIMM and LRDIMM reference designs include PC5-4000, PC5-4800, PC5-5600, and PC5-6400, while also requiring design-specific verification for timing, signal integrity, thermal behavior, and power delivery.

A platform example: supported rate depends on configuration

The AMD Versal AI Edge Series Gen 2 datasheet, revision 1.4 released July 1, 2026, lists 6400 Mb/s for several DDR5 component and single-rank DIMM configurations, but lists 4000 Mb/s for its two-rank RDIMM configuration. This is an example for that controller—not a universal DDR5 limit or a speed rating for all RDIMMs.

What does the 2TB LRDIMM figure mean?

In its July 14, 2020 report on the standard, AnandTech said a single fully populated LRDIMM could eventually reach 2TB as higher-density DRAM devices and module designs developed. “Eventually” matters: this was a projection of possible module capacity, not evidence that JEDEC guaranteed a 2TB shipping product or that 2TB LRDIMMs were generally available in 2020.

The figure also describes a server-oriented LRDIMM, not a typical desktop memory stick. The standardization of DDR5 alone does not establish whether a particular system can address a given module capacity; the controller and platform’s supported module types and population rules matter.

What is an LRDIMM, and can it go in a desktop?

LRDIMM means Load-Reduced DIMM. It is a registered server-memory module class, distinct from the unbuffered desktop DIMMs commonly used in consumer PCs. JEDEC’s JESD305 describes DDR5 RDIMMs and LRDIMMs as 288-pin, 1.1 V modules intended for server, workstation, and database environments.

A DDR5 desktop motherboard does not support an LRDIMM merely because both use DDR5. Module class and platform support must match. Consumer types such as desktop UDIMM or CUDIMM, laptop SO-DIMM, and server RDIMM or LRDIMM are not interchangeable categories; check the exact system or motherboard documentation before buying memory.

How to check whether a DDR5 module will work

  1. Identify the form factor and module class. Confirm whether the system requires a desktop UDIMM/CUDIMM, laptop SO-DIMM, or server RDIMM/LRDIMM. Do not infer compatibility from DDR5 branding alone.
  2. Check the platform’s memory support. Consult the processor, system, or motherboard documentation for supported module types and maximum capacity. The rate and capacity can vary with controller and configuration.
  3. Check population and rank rules. Verify supported ranks, number of modules per channel, and permitted slot combinations. A controller may support different rates for different rank and module configurations.
  4. Match the specified speed and kit configuration. Confirm supported data rate and timings for the intended population; a module’s label does not override platform limits.

For example, Transcend’s July 2025 consumer DDR5 product specification lists DDR5-6400 CUDIMM examples. That establishes a consumer module category exists; it does not establish compatibility with a particular motherboard, nor does it make a CUDIMM a substitute for an LRDIMM.
