In the 2024 Dungeons & Dragons rules, a creature is Bloodied when it has half its Hit Points or fewer remaining. The state does nothing by itself. It only matters when another rule, such as a monster trait, spell, or feature, says it does. The 2014 fifth-edition Basic Rules don’t define Bloodied at all, and 4th Edition used a similar half-hit-point threshold that some powers referenced directly.
What does Bloodied mean in the 2024 rules?
The 2024 Rules Glossary (D&D Beyond Basic Rules) defines it in one sentence: “A creature is Bloodied while it has half its Hit Points or fewer remaining.”
The Damage and Healing section of “Playing the Game” in the 2024 Basic Rules adds the key limit: “If you have half your Hit Points or fewer, you’re Bloodied, which has no game effect on its own but which might trigger other game effects.”
How to read it at the table
- Exactly half counts. The wording is “half … or fewer,” so a creature with 20 of 40 Hit Points is Bloodied.
- It isn’t a penalty. Being Bloodied gives no disadvantage, damage change, or loss of actions. Apply an effect only when a specific feature, spell, item, or stat block names Bloodied.
- It tracks current Hit Points against the maximum. Healing above half ends the state, and a lowered maximum changes where the threshold sits. Check the actual wording of any triggering feature.
Is Bloodied a condition in 2014 fifth edition?
No. The conditions appendix of the 2014 Basic Rules lists the defined conditions, and Bloodied isn’t among them. D&D Beyond’s 2024 Player’s Handbook overview presents Bloodied as a new rule, which supports that distinction.

A 2014 DM can still say “the ogre is bloodied” as narration to signal that a creature is badly hurt. That is description, not an automatic mechanical state. Players shouldn’t expect a penalty or trigger from the word alone.
How did 4th Edition handle it?
An excerpt of the 4th Edition Dungeon Master’s Kit says the bloodied value of a typical creature is half its maximum hit points. It also says some powers and effects work only against, or work better against, a bloodied target. So 4e tied the threshold into specific mechanics, while the 2024 core definition says the state has no effect itself.

Don’t assume every 4e creature or power treated bloodied identically. Check the printing and errata for the power in question. The excerpt is an archival copy hosted by a third party, and Wizards’ support page says customer service no longer answers 4e rules questions, pointing readers to collected developer updates and errata instead.
Edition comparison
| Edition | Formally defined? | Threshold | Effect of the state itself |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 5e | Yes (Rules Glossary) | Half Hit Points or fewer | None; other rules may trigger off it |
| 2014 5e | No entry in the Basic Rules conditions appendix | None official; DMs may use “bloodied” descriptively | None by default |
| 4th Edition | Yes, as a bloodied value | Typically half maximum hit points | Some powers and effects check for it |
Can I use Bloodied as a homebrew rule?
Yes. In a 2014 campaign, you can adopt the 2024 threshold as a house rule or keep “bloodied” as narration only. Tell players which one is in force. If you want mechanical consequences, write them into the monster ability or feature instead of assuming the word imposes anything.

Questions your definition should answer
- Is the threshold half of maximum Hit Points (and how do you round), or a fixed value?
- Does the state end immediately when healing lifts the creature above the threshold?
- Does an effect trigger once per encounter, each time the creature becomes Bloodied, or every turn it stays Bloodied?
- Do temporary Hit Points count? The official text doesn’t say, so decide and state it.
- Does it apply to player characters, monsters, objects, or only certain creature types?
These timing and scope choices are homebrew decisions. The official 2024 text supplies the threshold but doesn’t settle every custom trigger.
