Datacenter proxies can route Playwright and other browser-automation traffic through a proxy endpoint. They can be useful for authorized QA, regional page checks, localization testing, and public-page monitoring. Configure the proxy in the browser, then choose whether jobs need a fresh route or a stable session: workflows that depend on cookies or login state usually need continuity. A proxy alone does not guarantee access or prevent a challenge.
What a datacenter proxy changes in browser automation
A proxy is an intermediary route between the browser and the site it visits. In Playwright, you can supply proxy settings when launching a browser. The settings can include the proxy server, optional bypass domains, and optional username and password. Playwright supports HTTP and SOCKS proxies; check the documentation for the Playwright version your project uses before deploying.
Routing changes the browser’s network path, not the rest of the automation environment. Cookies, scripts, authentication, navigation timing, and the target site’s own behavior still affect whether a flow works. A different exit IP is not a guarantee against bot checks, challenges, or blocks. Use proxy routing only for targets and activities you are authorized to access.
When a datacenter route may fit
- Authorized QA: Check page behavior, redirects, or a permitted test environment from a chosen network route.
- Regional page checks: Compare the page output for supported locations. Confirm the actual resulting location and content instead of assuming the requested route produced the desired result.
- Localization checks: Observe region-sensitive content as part of a legitimate test or monitoring workflow.
- Public-page monitoring: Automate checks of public pages where the site’s terms and your authorization allow it.
These are use cases, not evidence that a particular proxy service will be fast, reliable, geographically accurate, or successful against a given target. The available vendor material describes Playwright, Puppeteer, and Selenium workflows, but does not provide independent provider benchmarks or success rates.

Choose rotation or a sticky session

“Sticky” and “rotating” are provider controls, not universal implementation details. Check how the service defines a session, when it changes the exit IP, and whether continuity applies across requests or browser sessions. Browserless documents its own sticky-session and country-routing controls; do not assume another service exposes the same options.
Configure a proxy in Playwright
Set the proxy at browser launch. Replace the example endpoint and credentials with values issued by your provider. Keep credentials out of source control; environment variables are used below so the example does not embed a real secret.

Endpoint and authentication checks
- Use the protocol specified by the provider in the
servervalue, such as an HTTP or SOCKS endpoint. - Supply the endpoint’s username and password through the supported fields when required. Do not assume that credentials for a website login are the same as proxy credentials.
- Check whether your provider expects a location or session identifier in its endpoint or credentials. Those conventions are provider-specific and are not established here.
- Test one permitted page before running a large job. Verify both that navigation completes and that the resulting location or page output is what the check requires.
Compare proxy options before choosing

Performance, reliability, and cost
A proxy adds a network route, so performance depends on the provider, endpoint, location, target, and the rest of the browser workflow. The available material does not establish an industry-wide speed or cost advantage for datacenter proxies. Browserless characterizes its own datacenter routing as faster and lower cost than its residential routing, but that statement should not be generalized to other services.

Plan for normal automation failures: a site can load slowly, require a session state your job does not have, or return a challenge. Record whether a failure was a proxy connection problem, a navigation timeout, or a page-level response so that changing the proxy is not the automatic fix for every symptom. Test representative permitted workflows and locations before relying on a route for monitoring.
Troubleshoot common failures
Browser launch fails
- Likely cause: The proxy server string is missing, malformed, or uses a protocol the endpoint does not accept.
- Fix: Confirm the exact endpoint and protocol with the provider, set
PROXY_SERVER, and check the syntax against the Playwright version in the project.
Proxy authentication is rejected
- Likely cause: Credentials are missing, incorrect, or not being passed using the framework’s proxy fields.
- Fix: Check the provider-issued proxy credentials and set the optional
usernameandpasswordfields where required. Keep those values separate from target-site login credentials.
A multi-step flow is challenged after navigation
- Likely cause: The exit IP changed during the session, or the target’s behavior is not explained by the route alone.
- Fix: For a flow that depends on cookies or login state, test a stable session. Browserless notes that some anti-bot systems associate cookies or sensor data with an egress IP; this is not a universal explanation for every challenge.
The page appears to come from the wrong region
- Likely cause: The chosen provider or plan may not cover the requested location, or the observed page is affected by factors beyond the proxy route.
- Fix: Verify provider coverage and inspect the actual page output from the permitted test. Do not treat a country setting as proof of the page’s resulting location.
Navigation times out or output differs between runs
- Likely cause: A target response, session state, script, cookie, or network route may have changed.
- Fix: Reproduce with a small, authorized test; distinguish route connectivity from page behavior; and preserve a stable route if the workflow requires session continuity. Proxy rotation alone is not a reliable general remedy.
