DATA4 planned to invest €1 billion in Italian digital infrastructure between 2023 and 2029, according to a 2024 report by Data Center Knowledge, which attributed the statement to DATA4 country director Davide Suppia. That is a reported investment plan—not confirmation that the full amount has been spent or that it is a construction budget for one data center.

What DATA4 said it planned to invest

Data Center Knowledge reported in 2024 that DATA4 intended to invest €1 billion in the development of its digital infrastructure in Italy over the period from 2023 through 2029. The article attributed this statement to Davide Suppia, then identified as DATA4’s country director: “For the development of our digital infrastructures in Italy, Data4 plans to invest €1 billion between 2023 and 2029.”

The amount and dates should be read as an announced plan reported by trade press. They do not establish how much DATA4 has spent, whether the plan has changed, or how the investment is divided among projects. The cited report is not a current company update.

What the plan covers—and what remains unknown

DATA4 describes itself as a European data-center operator that finances, designs, constructs, and operates its own facilities. Its customer offerings range from colocation rack space to a dedicated building, according to the company’s profile.

The €1 billion announcement concerns Italian digital infrastructure development broadly. The available sources do not specify a project-by-project allocation, a data-center capacity target, permits, construction milestones, completion dates, or spending to date. It therefore cannot be treated as the budget for a single site or as evidence that a particular facility is under construction.

Where DATA4 operates in Italy

DATA4’s official company profile lists its Milan campus in Cornaredo, in the Metropolitan City of Milan. That establishes a DATA4 presence there, but does not show that all—or any stated share—of the €1 billion plan is allocated to the Cornaredo campus.

The distinction matters when interpreting headlines about data-center investment: a company’s existing campus location is not, by itself, proof of where a broader announced investment will be spent.

A later Italian energy agreement is separate

On 4 March 2025, DATA4 announced a power purchase agreement with Edison Energia to develop solar energy in Italy. DATA4’s Head of Energy Sourcing, Olivier de Nomazy, said the baseload agreement would help cover a larger part of the company’s energy needs and increase the share of renewables in its long-term contracts.

Do not confuse DATA4’s plan with other Italian projects

Italy has seen other large data-center proposals and investment announcements, but they involve different companies and must be kept separate from DATA4’s reported plan.

Company or program Reported figure What the figure refers to
DATA4 €1 billion, planned for 2023–2029 Italian digital infrastructure investment, as reported by Data Center Knowledge in 2024. The report does not establish spend to date or a site-specific allocation.
K2 Strategic Potential investment of up to €5.3 billion; approximately 300 MW A separate proposed hyperscale campus south of Milan, according to Italy’s Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy on 26 June 2026.
Two other programs in Lombardy and Sardinia About €6.8 billion combined Separate data-center programs described by the ministry on 4 August 2026 as having received a declaration of national strategic interest.

The figures are not directly interchangeable: the DATA4 figure is an announced plan over a stated period, K2’s is a potential project investment, and the ministry’s €6.8 billion figure covers two other programs. None should be added to or attributed to DATA4.
