Dasher is an information-efficient text-entry interface that lets you write by continuously steering through a zooming display instead of pressing one key at a time. Its language model makes likely character sequences easier to reach, while still allowing you to compose text that is not on a fixed word list. It can be relevant to people who use eye tracking or other pointing methods, but performance and device compatibility depend on the user’s input method and software setup.
How Dasher turns pointing into text
In a conventional keyboard, each character is entered with a separate key press. In Dasher, you steer a pointer through a display containing nested regions for possible next characters. Moving into a region zooms it and reveals more choices; continuing through the display builds a sequence of text.
The interface uses a language model to make probable sequences easier to select. That can help users move through common letter combinations efficiently, but it does not restrict writing to a fixed dictionary or word list. Less predictable text remains possible, though it may take more steering.
Who may find Dasher useful
The project describes Dasher as an option for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and for people who cannot readily use a conventional keyboard. Documented input categories include mouse, touchscreen, eye tracking, head tracking, switch access, trackball, joystick, rollerball and foot mouse.

Those categories describe possible ways to control Dasher, not guaranteed compatibility with every device or software build. In particular, an eye tracker needs to provide a pointing or cursor-control path that works with the chosen Dasher frontend and operating system.
How fast can you type with Dasher?
There is no single speed that applies to every user. Dasher’s FAQ says entry speed depends on the input method and practice. Historical studies provide useful context, but their results are not a prediction of an individual’s present-day speed.

The Cambridge press release quoted Dasher researcher David MacKay describing the model’s role: “A language model is used to shape this library in such a way that it’s quick and easy to select probable sequences of characters and hard to make spelling mistakes.” That statement describes the design goal; it should not be read as a guarantee that users will avoid spelling errors.
What to check before choosing Dasher
- Reliable input: Identify the pointing method you can control consistently, including whether it is mouse, touch, eye tracking, a switch or another supported category.
- Accessibility pathway: For an assistive device, check that it can provide input the selected Dasher frontend can receive. The project’s general support for eye tracking does not certify any particular tracker.
- Platform and frontend: The Dasher Project describes v6 as a shared engine used by native frontends, while its GTK frontend repository labels itself early development. - Language and writing needs: Confirm that the language and alphabet you need are supported by the specific build you plan to use; availability and capabilities can differ by frontend.
- Learning time: Expect to practise steering through the interface. Historical results show that practice and input method matter, not that a particular speed is assured.
What the available evidence does—and does not—establish
The original Dasher work was published in 2000, and the reported typing-speed figures cited here come from 2002. They establish that researchers evaluated Dasher as a text-entry method and reported results under particular study conditions; they do not establish typical speeds for current users or a modern device-and-software combination.

Project documentation supports eye tracking and several other input categories in general, but the available information does not certify particular assistive-device models, establish feature parity among frontends, or confirm stable release dates. Check the documentation for the exact platform and hardware combination you intend to use.
