Online play can surface messages and traces of other players. These features let players encounter signs of other people’s activity without turning the game into a continuously shared session.
How difficult is Dark Souls?
Dark Souls is a challenging action RPG built around deliberate combat, exploration, and learning enemy patterns. Bandai Namco’s official Dark Souls page uses promotional language describing “an even more punishing difficulty level”; that wording conveys the publisher’s framing, not an independent measurement. In a 2011 interview, director Hidetaka Miyazaki discusses the design challenge of making difficulty demanding without making it so punishing that players quit.
How long does Dark Souls take to beat?

Is the story connected to Dark Souls II and III?
Yes in the broad sense: the publisher presents Dark Souls: Remastered, Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin, and Dark Souls III: The Fire Fades as entries in one series and describes their universe as having deeply rooted lore. It calls Dark Souls III the final journey in the series. This supports describing the games as sharing a series and lore world; it does not, by itself, establish exactly how directly each sequel’s main plot follows the first game’s events.

No. Bandai Namco describes Dark Souls as a “spiritual successor” to Demon’s Souls, not as its direct sequel, and identifies Lordran as the setting of Dark Souls. The publisher’s Dark Souls page provides that framing.

Which version should you start with?
Dark Souls: Remastered is the direct product for someone looking to play the first Dark Souls; the publisher says it includes the main game and the Artorias of the Abyss DLC. FromSoftware announced its release for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Windows on January 12, 2018. Check the current store listing for your platform before buying, since compatibility and availability depend on the platform and market.
If you want all three games, Bandai Namco’s Dark Souls Trilogy listing identifies the collection for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Check the listing for your region and the exact contents of the edition being sold.
